I definitely think there is a good reason behind his denying that she is his daughter. I think that him and Meera's mom probably hatched the plan to save their (Meera and her mom's) lives 20 years ago. I can't see why else Meera's mom still seems to love her dad other than she has a lot of love and respect for him. The threat is probably still there which is why he wanted to deny being her dad in front of everybody so no one has any doubts thereby keeping Meera (unknowingly) and her Mom safe from whatever it is they are hiding from. This of course is just my personal opinion😆

Edited to add:
Don't think the slap was needed nor warranted however perhaps it will aid in making everyone think that she is definitely not the sarpanch's daughter because otherwise they may think to themselves why would he slap her?
