My blog: A story I told
Posted on October 9, 2012 by admin
Australian Film actor/director Yahoo Serious has brilliantly said, "Find your own specific voice in filmmaking and go for it. Either people will get it or they won't and that's what it's all about."
Knowingly or knowingly I did exactly that! I chose to make films that are from our very surroundings and more real than the original unsaid diktat of cinema to be fiction. And thankfully, I got support for the same from every corner. After 72 days of extensive shooting and great team work, I am a happy man with the response Heroine has got. So to begin with, I am thankful to all of you, my audience, for whom I make my film. It's not an easy task to make a film that is about your own industry and yet I am glad that everything fell in place.
I have always been a maker who has loved to tell stories of my own conviction through my cinema. I told them when I was criticised and I told them when I was applauded. For me what matters is my honesty in my narrative.
Have always respected the criticism but have stood strong by my convictions. Otherwise the journey from Chandni Bar to Heroine would have been an impossible one to take.
When Chandni Bar released the initial knee jerk reaction of the critics was not very encouraging but my conviction was validated with the box office reports. Who would have thought that 12 years ago a heroine oriented de-glam film based on a bar dancer's life would go on to make a box office success. I revisited this very same emotion with the release of Heroine when the reviews were mixed but the verdict was encouraging.
I have always been known for making films in controlled budget. Heroine was made on a controlled budget of Rs 21 crs and released at the cost of Rs 32cr with print and publicity and it had garnered a net collection of nearly Rs 53.5 cr worldwide by the second week, which is a phenomenal verdict for a heroine oriented film. While my film Fashion had garnered Rs 27 cr life time. It was termed as a super hit! In fact what was heartening was the overseas opening of Heroine was the highest for my female oriented film.
After every success I was being told to make films which were less risky and more bankable. But I chose the often unbeaten path and always stood vindicated. Every criticism has made me into a more humble person and a mature film maker.
I was very glad for Kareena, whose performance was widely applauded and appreciated.
Heroine would not have been an experience to cherish and a success to enjoy if not for my entire team. May it be Kareena, Arjun, Randeep, Divya, Shahana, my team of writers, technicians, direction, production, marketing team and PR team. Beliefs strengthened with the support of Ronnie Screwvala and Siddharth Roy Kapoor .
A final bow down on the chapter of Heroine' there are lots of stories to be told' and I shall be back with one very soon!
