PART 5
"Itni shiddat se maine tumhe pane ki Koshish ki hai
Ki har zarre ne mujhe tumse milane ki sajish ki hai"
Dhad Dhad.
Arnav is running up the stairs.
Dhad Dhad.
Khushi looks up to gaze at the full moon.
Dhad Dhad.
Arnav stumbles on the stairs in his haste.
Dhad Dhad.
Khushi hugs her knees, rests her head and closes her eyes.
Dhad Dhad.
A gentle breeze picks up.
Dhad Dhad.
He looks around, hope burning in his eyes.
Dhad Dhad.
Her mind if blissfully blank, it's peaceful here.
Dhad Dhad.
"KHUSHI?"
Dhad Dhad.
Her eyes snap open. Is she dreaming?
"KHUSHI???"
Dhad Dhad.
She slowly stands up and turns around. A pillar is blocking her line of sight.
Dhad Dhad.
"WHERE ARE YOU DAMNIT?"
She peers around the pillar, uncertainly. She sees the back of a man some distance away.
Dhad Dhad.
"KHUSHI?! I know you are here!"
She can hear him clearly. No she isn't dreaming.
Dhad Dhad.
"Arnavji?" she whispers softly.
Dhad Dhad.
Arnav slowly turns around, his eyes wide open in recognition of the voice that whispered. Her voice.
Dhad Dhad.
She stands absolutely still, her eyes wide open in disbelief and confusion as she stares at the handsome man in a blue and golden sherwani. It was him.
Dhad Dhad.
The air that was filled with his shouts just moments ago was blissfully quiet now. In fact, all anyone can hear is their slow laboured breathing as they go on gazing at each other. It feels like time has come to stand still.
Dhad Dhad.
He realises he had held his breath the moment he laid his eyes on her. She was standing in front of him, wearing a beautiful red and golden lehenga, jewellery still adorning her neck, hands and forehead. His bride. Khushi. He starts breathing again. She is here, just a few feet away when he has been looking all over the city for her. The relief brings with it a sudden surge of anger. He had been looking all over the city for her and here she was standing in front of him, looking at him with innocent eyes. He walks steadily towards her.
Khushi stares at him, feeling the wind knocked out of her lungs. It was him. He has come... Her breathing resumes slowly, as she watches him walk towards her in slow motion. Before she knows it, Arnav grabs her by the arms and pushes her close to him. He looks furious.
"HOW DARE YOU?" he growls. "Tumhari himmat kaise hui iss tarah shadi ke mandap se uth ke chale jane ki? Haan? Tum samajhti kya ho apne aap ko? (How dare you leave from the wedding this way? What do you think of yourself?)" Arnav shouts at her. His panic and desperation is fuelling his anger. Khushi continues looking up at him blankly. "Main paagalon ki tarah tumhe dhoondh raha tha, tumhe pata bhi hai? Railway station, bus stand, yahan tak hi mandir bhi aya tha main DO BAAR! Tum ghar pe bhi nahi thi! Itni raat gaye, poori Delhi bhar mein dhoondha tumhe. Aur tum YAHAN ho! (I've been looking for you like a mad man. I've searched the railway station, the bus stand, came to this temple too, TWICE. You weren't at home either. I've searched for you all over Delhi so late at night. And you are here?)" Arnav reels off relentlessly in one go, all his frustration tumbling out of him. He brings her closer and looks searchingly in her eyes. "Tumhe kuch ho jata to? (What if something happened to you?)" his voice suddenly breaks. Khushi sees tears brimming in his eyes.
Before she realises, Arnav pulls her tightly into a hug. He caresses her head, her back, trying desperately to hold on to every inch of her. "Tumne vaada kiya tha mujhse!" he whispers in anguish. "You promised me that you'll never leave me! Why did you just walk away Khushi? Mere pyar par tumhe itna hi bharosa tha (Didn't you trust my love?)?" he questions her torturedly.
Khushi gently withdraws herself from the hug, tears silently streaming from her eyes listening to his words. His arms remain outstretched in mid air whereas a look of surprise flashes in his eyes seeing her distancing herself from him. "Hum Amma aur aapke pitaji ke bare mein jante hain Arnav ji.(I know about your father and Amma, Arnavji)" Khushi's announcement startles Arnav. He looks staggered as this was the last thing he had been expecting to hear right now. Khushi looks at him sadly. "Aap hamari Amma se bahut nafrat karte hain, hai na?(You hate my mother a lot right?)" He looks at her blankly. How could such simple words be capable enough to clench his heart so painfully? He remains silent.
"Aap humse bahut pyaar karte hain, par humari Amma se usse bhi zyada nafrat karte hain. Isiliye aapne unhe apne ghar se nikaal diya (You love me a lot, but you hate my mother even more. That is why your threw her out of your house.)," she goes on saying in the same levelled tone. Arnav looks perplexed. How did Khushi know this? She wasn't there! Khushi comprehends the startled look on his face perfectly. "Hamare Shantivan se chale jaane ke kuch samaye baad Amma ne humein phone kiya tha ye poochne ke liye ki hum kahan hain. Tabhi ye baat humein pata chali (Amma had called me some time after I left Shantivan. I found out then itself.)," she answers his unasked question.
Khushi slowly wipes away her tears mechanically and stands determined, unyielding. Arnav looks at her with desperation in his eyes, an ache starting to grow in his heart.
"Aap jaante hain na ki humari Amma nahin jaanti thi ki aapke pitaji shadi shuda the?(You do know right, that my mother didn't know your father was a married man?)" she asks in a clear voice. She didn't bear any traces of being emotional, least of all her eyes which held a vacant look in them. "Kyunki, Shyam ji ke tarah, aapke pitaji ne bhi kabhi unko ye bataya hi nahin tha (because like Shyamji, your father never bothered telling her the truth)," she continues, her wavering voice gathering strength with every passing minute. Her voice echoes in his mind. "To sahi maiyne mein, Shyamji aur aapke Pitaji mein koi antar hi nahin hai (So to see the complete picture, there is no difference between your father and Shyamji)." Arnav blanches at hearing her speak to him this way. He should get irritated listening to hear her words, but her cool detached voice keeps his anger in check. This woman was not Khushi. She looked like her, but it felt as if someone else had possessed her.
"Shyamji ka sach aapko bahut baad mein pata chala. Aur aapko humein maaf karne mein samaye laga. Par aap apne ateet ka sach achhi tarah jaan chuke hain, (You found the truth about Shyamji so late, and you took your time to forgive me. But you are well aware of the truth about your past.)" Khushi replies to him, not answering to his request. "To ab aap faisla kijiye ki uss sach ko jaan ne ke baad, aapko hamari Amma ko maaf karna chahiye ya nahin.(So now you need to decide that after knowing that truth is my mother deserving of forgiveness or not.)"
Silence again dawns between them. Arnav wants to hold her in his arms again and tell her that everything will be alright. They'll figure something out. Desperation is clawing at him to do something. He tries taking a tentative step towards her, but she steps back. Arnav's eyes widen in alarm.
"Jab hum mandap se chale gaye, to ye soch ke ki aapko thoda waqt chahiye hoga. Apne ateet ke sach ko apne zehan mein rakhne ke liye. Kyunki humein laga ki nafrat aur pyaar ke beech mein, pyaar ko chunne ke liye, aapke dimag ko sambhalne mein thoda samay lagega. Hum bas aapko wahi samay dena chahate the Arnavji. Humein kya pata tha ki aap to apne ateet ki sazaa apne bhavishya ko dene wale hain (When I left the mandap, i thought you'd probably need some time. To absorb the truth about the past. Because I figured, to choose love between love and hatred, your mind would take some time. I just wanted to give you that time. How could I know, that you were going to punish your future because of the past?)," Khushi says, bowing her head in sadness. Arnav absorbs the impact of Khushi's words and a cold shiver runs down his body. Arnav can bear to see her fight with him, yell at him, get violent too. What he can't bear is her cutting herself from all emotions and be calm and composed when his nerves were all over the place. He isn't equipped to deal with this side of her.
"Khushi..." he murmurs, anxiety written in every note of his voice. After a silent moment, she looks up at him, he eyes again becoming expressionless.
"To ab aap hi bataiye Mr. Arnav Singh Raizada. Humne aapke pyaar par bharosa kiya ya nahin? Aur aapne hamare bharose ka maan rakha ya nahin?(So tell me Mr. Arnav Singh Raizada, Did I trust your love or not? And did you respect my trust on you?)" Khushi's serene voice cuts through his heart.
He had ruined everything. His anger and his impulsive decision to throw out her mother out of his house had ruined everything. Khushi never intended to leave him, she never intended to walk away! She wanted to give him time to adjust his thoughts and feelings of hatred. She trusted him enough to take the right decision. Because she loved him, with all her heart. And she had believed in his love for her, believed that it was enough for him to forget, forgive and move on. But as he looked into her glassy eyes, he realised he had hurt her again by not living up to her belief. He had hurt her again by disrespecting her mother. He had hurt her again by disrespecting her love for him. He had ruined everything!
The guilt of the realisation finally withdraws whatever strength is left in his body and he falls to his knees. He raises his arms, embraces Khushi by her waist and completely breaks down. The enormity of Khushi's love for him crashes down on him. He feels ashamed, he feels dirty, he feels worthless of her. She had given him the benefit of doubt, to show by his decisions after knowing the truth that he would stand by her, whatever happens. And he had failed her miserably.
"I'm so sorry Khushi!" he gasps, apology bursting from every inch of his body. His arms tighten around her, scared that she'll again walk away from him. Fear, so absolute, so alarmingly strong, surges through his body. "Main tumhara pyaar nahin deserve karta hun Khushi. But please! Mujhse door mat jao! Please! Main tumhare bina jee nahin paunga Khushi!(I know I don't deserve your love Khushi. But please! Don't walk away. Please! I won't be able to live without you Khushi.)" He bawls as a little baby, soaking her lehenga with his tears. Silent tears flow down from Khushi's eyes. Her eyes finally break through their expressionless barriers and she looks down at him in sadness not replying.
"Khushi, tumne vaada kiya tha na? Ki tum hamesha mere saath rahogi," Arnav babbles on, completely distraught and not letting go of her. "I love you Khushi! Please mujhe chod ke mat jao! Meri saansen ruk jayengi, Khushi!(Khushi you promised me! That you'll always be with me. I love you Khushi, please don't leave me alone. My breaths will cease.)" Khushi rests her hand on his head and caresses him lovingly. He looks up at her, relieved to feel her touch. She slowly sinks down to her knees as well, keeping her eyes level with him. She gently wipes off his tears.
"Hum bhi aapke bina nahin reh sakte hain Arnavji. Ye to aapko bahut pehle jaan lena chahiye tha(even I can't live without you Arnavji, you should've realised this a long time ago) ," she murmurs to him holding his face in her hands. Arnav can't control the tears that go on flowing from his eyes. Never has he felt so vulnerable and so unsure about his life. Despite Khushi's reassuring hands holding him, the fear refuses to uncloak his heart. What if she leaves him for sure? What will he do then? Panic reflects in his eyes as he gazes wildly at her. NO! I won't be able to live if she leaves.
Suddenly, they hear hurried footsteps behind them. Arnav and Khushi look around and are startled to see Buaji, Payal, Aakash and Garima running towards them, relieved to see Khushi. The couple slowly stand up. Khushi looks at this new gathering in confusion. Nobody knew she was here. She looks towards Arnav just in time to see him exchange a nod with Aakash. He had told Aakash to bring them to the temple? He was so sure I'd be here! Khushi suddenly thinks to herself.
Arnav steps aside as Gupta family grabs Khushi and doing their inspection to check if Khushi was alright. Buaji is teary eyed and immediately thanks Devi Maiyya to have protected her Parmeswari all this while. Payal starts shouting at Khushi for being such a big scare and then tightly hugs her crying. Finally Garima walks up to her. Payal steps away from the hug and finds Buaji instead. Garima and Khushi stand motionless looking at each other, pain evident in the former's eyes and guilt in the latter's.
"Aainda kabhi bhi," Garima says, her voice breaking, "kabhi bhi aisa mat karna Khuseee. Hum jeete jee mar jayenge!(Don't you ever... ever do this to me again Khusee. I'll die!)" she exclaims. Khushi immediately hugs her, finally breaking down for the first time since she walked out of Shantivan.
"Aisa baat kabhi bhi apni zubaan par mat laana Amma. Warna hum mar jayenge! (Don't ever talk about dying Amma, I'll die hearing your words.)" Khushi wails, her tears flowing without a break.
The Raizada brothers stand from a distance and watch quietly, neither of them trying to barge into their private moment. Arnav stares at Khushi crying.
She loves Garima so much. Despite her not being Khushi's birth mother, but she still loved her with all her heart. And he had insulted Garima, disrespected her in front of so many people, not having absorbed what was her side of the truth. He had gone ahead and jumped to conclusions and let his hatred wash away everything else in his life. He feels dissolving in the sea of love that is all around him. Love between siblings. Love between a mother with a tainted past, and a daughter who loved her inspite of it. The feeling of worthlessness creeps back into Arnav's heart. I don't deserve Khushi! He thinks ashamedly to himself. But he could try to make things better by trying to put salve on her wounds.
He slowly walks to Garima and Khushi.
"Meri Maa meri zindagi se bhi badh kar thi(My mother was my life)," Arnav mumbles to Garima with his hands folded not meeting her eyes. Garima and Khushi break their hug. Garima looks at him in surprise. "Aur itne saare saalon tak, main iss galat fehmi mein jeeta raha, ki unki maut ki zimmevaar aap ho. Ek baar bhi maine poori sachhai jaanne ki koshish nahin ki, aur jab aapne poori sachhai batai to maine use bhi samajhne ki koi koshish nahin ki.(And all these years, I was laboring under this delusion that you were responsible for her death. Not once did I try to learn the entire truth. And today when you did tell me, I didn't stop a moment to understand it either.)" Garima and Khushi glance at each other once before looking back at Arnav.
"Aaj tak Arnav Singh Raizada ne kabhi maafi nahin maangi, kyunki aaj tak woh hamesha sahi tha (Arnav Singh Raizada has never apologized because he thought he was always right.)," he continues, finally raising his eyes, to meet Garima's. "Par aaj main galat hun aur aaj aapke dukh ka zimmevaar main hun(But today I'm wrong and I'm responsible for your suffering and pain)," he whispers, his eyes confessing honesty and regret. "I'm sorry..."
Garima holds Arnav by the shoulders and he slowly brings his head to her shoulder, his hands still folded in apology. She doesn't say anything, but then she doesn't need to. Sometimes, a look, an action is all that it takes. Khushi stands back, allowing Arnav to finally let go of the hatred that has been brimming inside him for so long. Garima finally breaks the hug and caresses his face gently.
"Hum aapki Maa ki jagah nahin le payenge kabhi bhi. Par agar tum chaho, to hum Khushi ke saath saath, tumhare liye bhi Amma ban sakat hain (I can never take the place of your mother. but if you'd like, along with Khushi, I can be your Amma too.)," she mumbles gently and slowly walks away.
Aakash mentions that he's taking the Gupta family back to their house since it is already very late at night. He pauses and his glance shifts from Arnav to Khushi, uncertainty evident in his eyes. Arnav's gaze also goes towards Khushi, wondering if she was going to stay or leave. Khushi stands still looking from Aakash to Arnav. She understands the unspoken query in Aakash's eyes and she sees the insecurity in Arnav's eyes. She slowly starts walking towards them.
Arnav's heart sinks. NO! She can't leave! Not after everything.
Just as she reaches Arnav's side, she pauses and turns sideways to look at Arnav. He looks back at her imploringly. Stay please?
She looks back towards Aakash and quietly shakes her head. Before she realises what has happened, she is swept off her feet by Arnav in a bear hug and swirled around, her feet a few inches above the ground. Aakash smiles and walks down the stairs to his car.
Arnav stops swirling Khushi and they fall in a heap to the floor, completely out of breath. Arnav realises Khushi is holding onto his collar, their familiar old way. They both knew it would take them time to get over this, it would take time to feel normal again. But right now, it was extremely crucial for Arnav to ask Khushi. He fumbles in his Sherwani pocket and brings out his mother's kangans. Khushi's eyes widen in surprise as she stares from the Kangan back to Arnav.
"Do you still love me Khushi?" She knows how scared he was thinking she'd leave him. She knew she couldn't bear the thought of being apart from him. Khushi looks into his eyes, her heart aching to hear the fear in his voice and see the insecurity in his eyes as if she'd disappear again. She slowly slips her hand in one of the kangan and whispers softly.
"Hamesha..."
