VirMan -Their Journey Against Cancer [Part 6]
They stood side by side, with each other, for each other. She knew now that she would never be alone. He was just glad her tears had vanished. Her smile was all he cared about. His company was all she needed. She was bursting with happiness because she knew now that Viraat would never leave her side. So she easily got back to her usual charming joking self.
'Main kuch bhi karun, kitne bhi bhaw khaun, par last mein credit tumhe leke jaana hota hai na? Last mein innings puri main khelun, puri batting main karun, par last ball pe chauka maarke sabki appreciation tumhe hi lootni hoti hai na?'
As usual, the typical Punjabi nature of over-reacting took its toll on the Vadhera clan, and they pounced on Viraat, telling him that he had injured the family's reputation by chopping off his hair (As if!) Viraat stood in front of them, bold and fearless and gave them his explanation in the simplest manner possible.
'Main Maanvi se pyaar karta hun. I. LOVE. MAANVI.'
Deep down in her heart, she had known he loved her. But to hear him say it aloud, in front of his family, brought back her very worst fears. She had prayed for Viraat to remain unaware of the love that bound them together, but she been mistaken. Viraat knew he loved her. So she tried the only other option left to push him away.
'Tumne himmat kaise ki yeh kehne ki haan? Hamaare beech mein pyaar kahaan se aa gaya?'
She could deny it to the world, she could deny to herself. She could even deny it to her sister. But she could deny the soul that was reflected in the mirror every time she saw herself. Her soul belonged to Viraat. There was no denying that fact. She could run away from it, but it would always be there. So she broke down and confessed, to her sister.
'Dil mein basaa hai woh mere... Meri har saans mein basaa hai woh... Main pyaar karti hun Viraat se. Di, I love Viraat. I LOVE HIM.'
There was no way she could avoid him while they lived under the same roof. So she decided to leave. Viraat was confused and hurt. Confused at why his family was reacting so vehemently at his haircut. It was just hair. It would grow back. What was the big deal? Hurt because even though he had never expected Maanvi to love him back, she had never expected her to reject his love. To have her walk away from him simply because he had confessed made no sense to him.
'Maanvi ke jaane se kiski bhalaai hogi? Mujhse pucho. Maanvi ke jaane ke baad mera kya haal hoga.'
He tried to reason with her. He tried to beg and he tried to plead. Why couldn't she understand that he couldn't live without her? She was necessary for his survival. She wasn't his desire, she was his need.
'Maanvi please tum mujhe chhod kar mat jao... Main tumhaara khyaal kaise rakh paunga? Please Maanvi, mujhe itni badi sazaa mat do... Main tumhe yahaan se jaate hue nahi dekh sakta. Apna faisla badal lo...'
When he failed to convince her, he felt his heart getting broken into pieces. He expressed his disappointment with his family to his mom, asking her why she hadn't supported him. Why hadn't anyone taken his side? Why was his love for a dying girl being considered a crime? All he had tried to do was cheer up his angel. So why was he being punished by everybody else?
'Aur agar aapko fikar hai toh, kyun nahi usko jaake samjhaate ho? Kyun nahi rokte ho? Ki Maanvi please mat jao. Please ruk jao...'
He had accepted the fact that maybe Death might put a barrier between him and his Maanvi. He was ready for that. He had accepted the fact that he might just have to spend the rest of his life alone, in her memories. But that was alright with him. He was ready to die a hundred deaths for one more moment with Maanvi.
'Zindagi ka anth hota hai, pyaar ka nahi. Main Maanvi ko khone se pehle paana chahta hun mom. Chahe sirf sirf kuch hi palon ke liye ki kyun nahi.'
She remembered all the times she had spent ignoring his hints, reminiscing about all the things he had told her, all the layered statements he had made which indirectly translated to 'I love you Maanvi'. She realized now that they had fallen for each other way before either of them had realized it. Their realization didn't matter now. All that mattered was that she was about to die, and she would not, under any circumstances, take him down with her.
'Chaahkar bhi main tumhaara saath nahi de paungi. Please mujhe maaf kar dena partner. Mujhe tumse door jaana hoga. Hamesha ke liye.'
So she left. Breaking his heart and her own. Leaving him broken-hearted, she cursed herself for hurting him but since she was convinced there was no other way out, she kept herself strong and said goodbye. She didn't have the strength to walk away from him. So he backed away from her, believing the lie that she portrayed – that she didn't want him at all. He disappeared into the darkness that had now engulfed his life.
'Jaati hun Viraat. Apna dhyaan rakhna.'
