Reema, interesting how you mentioned about your mom in your post today because I watched the show with my Mom too today and was going to share my experience till I saw your post! So I was like perfect, I can just comment underneath rather than making a separate thread!
So I usually watch the show on my laptop but today I happen to be on time for TV telecast so I was watching it and my mom was sitting beside me who has never seen this show but was intrigued by the episode from its very first scene! Initially she thought that Jeevika had a miscarriage till the nurse mentioned the job being done! During the break, I gave her brief synopsis as to what led to Jeevika's decision of aborting her child. She watched the entire episode & said "I can somehow connect to this"!
(Paraphrase of our little conversation followed after the show):
My mom was pregnant with twins ( me and another baby boy) but being a premature babies, my other twin brother didn't make it, 12 hrs after the birth he passed away. My dad being away at that time (work purposes) travelled 3 days upon hearing the news and mom told me that it was probably the first time she had seen my dad break down like anything! So, in context to the show, she said she can connect to Jeevika's pain- no matter how she lost her child (natural death, deliberate move one like Abortion)- ultimately it is still a loss of a child. Mom said I had some reassurance with you (me) being there but Jeevika doesn't even have that- Yes, Manvi is her first child but again that feeling of having a child after nourishing it for 8 months in your womb and then going through the labour pain is something else on its own! At that point my brother walked in and said Jeevika chose to make this move (I just wanted to punch him right there and then- Geez Guys!) but my Mom said that no doubt, but her pain and loss is nothing less than any other mother out there who lost her child for various reasons! She said Her pain started the minute she decided to go for an abortion- one shivers at the thought of doing such act whereas she placed her other child's happiness over the unborn one and stood by it! Saying something is one thing but executing is another, and she stood firm by her decision till the very last minute! And seeing Viren breaking down, mom instantly recalled my dad breaking down in the hospital years ago. She found it absolutely real and definitely something one can connect to! She didn't cry as I did but her choked voice during our conversation did express her emotions!
My Take:
Just Within the first 5 seconds, I could feel my eyes being teary and honestly as much as I tried to hold them in, I gave up; tears rolled down as the scenes progressed! Such a powerful impact and massive applause to KD for enacting this particular scene because she LIVED every moment of this scene to put it across as utmost reality! Concept of abortion in TV is not new, I have seen many other shows where abortion tracks have been introduced for the most pathetic reasons (girl is career oriented thus does not want to enter motherhood, an outgoing, rich spoiled girl gets pregnant before marriage and aborts child to hide the news from her husband, sex-determination test to abort the girl child) BUT when this show projects something similar that serves a bigger purpose and with a valid reason, it becomes a matter of promoting indecent act, a talk of the town of something that apparently does not happen in our society?!
Like I mentioned in other thread, ABORTION is taking place in people's homes and their backyards yet when same thing is projected at a higher scale, it becomes harder for them accept the truth as if their society is nothing but Pure! For those speaking about reality can accept the above mentioned scenarios but not this? Why? Why so much hype for this particular track- because for ONCE someone is showing something that believable and logical!!!! How many cases are out there of similar situation of abortion where one is aborting to save one's life- very rare! I am not promoting abortion BUT why such a varied reaction from audiences on this issue?!!
We cannot handle too much reality on shows because we fail to accept our society's flaws and ill practices and claim that our society is anything but that AND at the same time we cannot accept something that is OTT, fictitious yet positive (sisters show being a prime example), because it is not REALITY; it is not practical and does not sync with our society's rules and norms- A sister (especially one that is married) cannot abort her child to save her other sister, a girl's in-laws can never accept their daughter-in-law being so attached and loyal to her family after marriage, husband like Viren does not exist, etc etc! Well Why NOT? Why can't we be accepting and create society that has a sister like Jeevika and Manvi, a husband like Viren?! Sometimes or many times actually, fictitious idea results from a desire- a desire to have a perfect world, relations like that of sisters or husband wife in this show!!!! Basic problem: TOO REAL= DENY! UNREAL= REJECT!!!!
I honestly don't know what I wrote and completely went off topic (Sorry Reema!) Mentioned similar things in other thread of yours (Why sisters are mocked) but went little more crazy in this post of mine! Its not a usual me to go off and vent like this but today is an exception! I hope it all makes sense though!!!
