Chapter Fifty: Nani Ventures Out
"Green Heart!!" cried the parrot suddenly and the woman sitting on the armchair smiled. She had been fingering that very heart on the handkerchief and the parrot had probably been dying to voice it out. She sat rocking in her chair for a while, staring into the darkness and then suddenly she sat up.
"You know, Fortune, that girl was right''..maybe I shouldn't prison myself''.." She leaned forward and lit the candle she had extinguished a few minutes ago. Then standing up, she walked to the door, one hand (the one with the cloth wrapped around it) holding the candle holder and the other hand on the door handle.
She opened it and peered out into the blackness, "The darkness within a soul? Or is it the darkness of the night alone?"
Fortune squawked from within the room and Nani looked over her shoulder, "Suit yourself, silly bird, if you are so scared of the dark then I suggest you can stay in this room. But I'm taking the candle with me."
She stepped out and closed the door and waited in the dark corridor, listening for sounds. Her eyes couldn't pick out anything specific but she walked forwards. It was like a baby learning to take her first steps, and she was discovering the narrow dark corridor as if she were seeing it for the first time.
All of a sudden, she paused. There was a door to her left. She leaned at the wooden expanse and placed her ear against its cold smoothness. She heard sounds of grunting and struggling within. She moved away hastily, realizing whose room it was. She turned around to return back to her room but suddenly she stopped. No, I have been a most heartless woman all these years''.what if he's changed, what if he's learned to''..
She retraced her steps back and stood before the door again. Her hand trembled as it knocked on his door to announce to him that someone was outside. There was no sound from within, so she pulled on the handle and braved the door open. The candlelight fell upon the bed and there was no one on it. She moved the candle to search elsewhere when she saw the eyes looking up at her from under the bed.
Her heart leapt in fear. Was he''..?
The dark eyes closed and she heard him shuffling and then from under the bed, emerged her grandson. He sat on the floor, his back to his bed and he eyed her. He was shirtless and sweating profusely and there was a belt hanging loosely around his neck, "What are doing here, Nani?"
He stood up and walked towards her and fear crept in her mind but she stood her ground. He came closer and closer and then she saw his face in the candlelight. She realized his fight had passed and all was safe.
"Chotey?" her motherly voice called to him and his face saddened, "Were you afraid, Nani?"
Nani nodded, tears running down her face, as she lifted her hand and caressed his cheek, "You are so tall''.how much you have grown."
"It has been many years, Nani," he said, leaning into his grandmother's hand, and then his face was turned to doubt, "Are you really standing here before me?"
"Yes."
"You really came outside your room?"
"Yes."
"Why? What made you come out?"
"A realization."
He waited.
"A realization that hatred and fear must not be permitted to defeat us."
He winced at the words, and looked away, "Do you want to come in, Nani?"
"No, I am feeling too tired suddenly," she said, "Must be the excitement in having emerged out of my room, seen you and talked to you."
"Must be," he said, standing in the darkness, looking away.
"Chotey?"
"Hmmm?"
"I do not like that girl."
"Which girl?" he asked, coming towards her and the light from the candle glowed upon his frown.
"The one you have brought here."
"Why not?" The frown remained.
"She is not the kind-"
"That heals me? Oh please, Nani, no more of this talk!"
"Alright, alright," said Nani hastily, "I was just..'.maybe we could change her to become like the one that heals''"
"And how does 'the one that heals' look like?" he asked mockingly.
"It's not a matter of looks," said Nani, offended, "It's a matter of the heart."
"I do not have a heart."
"I know. Which is why we need a girl for you that has a heart."
"Lavanya doesn't have a heart?"
"She doesn't have a heart that heals. You are heartless and for that to be recompensed you cannot have a random girl who has nothing equal to you but her status and her''.fashion sense."
Lord Arnav scowled, "Are you telling me all this because you have a certain girl in mind?"
Nani shook her head, "Whatever gave you that idea!"
"I don't know," he said suspiciously, "Just a thought."
"Well, I think you should sleep now and I must sleep too," said Nani, beginning to retreat, "But I still do not like that girl."
And then she was gone and he had shut the door. Nani reached her room and after closing the door, she snuffed out her candle and sank into her armchair.
Fortune squawked a welcome. Or maybe the bird had asked how matters were outside the Door.
"Well," said Nani, rocking, "Chotey may be clever but I am determined about what I said. I do not like this girl, Fortune. I do not like her at all."
"Green Heart!" said the bird, and Nani smiled.
Chapter Fifty One: Figments in the Forest
The General walked into his tent and slumped upon the bedding. His back and limbs ached and he groaned with pain. This was the third night it had happened after he had left for the East.
He rolled over to his other side and closed his eyes. He was so tired that he didn't know when he had drifted to sleep. In his sleep, he began wandering. It was a forest like the one he had come from a few minutes ago.
He was walking through it, his boots crunching on the wet ground. He heard footsteps behind him and he stopped. He turned around, and there was a child standing there. A child aged around three.
"Who are you?" he asked.
The child smiled and reached out a hand.
He saw that the child wanted to give him something and he stretched out his opened palm towards her. She placed something soft upon his hand. He brought his hand nearer to where he could see what the girl had given him. The moonlight shone upon his hand and he saw that it was a red rose. He frowned, was it moving? He stared at it for a moment and suddenly realized that it wasn't moving but there was blood oozing out of its petals. With a yell, he dropped the flower to the ground. But his hand still dripped of the blood.
"No," he said, and looked up at the child. The child no longer smiled but there were tears of blood upon her face.
"Ahhh!!!" The General sat up in his tent, panting and sweating terribly. He stripped off his wet clothes and sank into the bedding again.
Running a hand through his hair he breathed deeply. He did not want to see that dream again and that would mean he shouldn't sleep. He sat up and took out a parchment and a quill.
Miss Gupta,
My life is not as happy as it appears. There are things that I cannot''.
He scratched it off.
Miss Gupta,
You have to understand me. I need you to.''
He scratched that off too.
Miss Gupta
There is something I must tell you. I am a''.
He scratched off what he's written again.
Miss Gupta
I''.
He scrunched up the parchment and threw it into the corner. Exasperated, he kept the quill aside, sighed and laid down again. He didn't want to dream again, but maybe he could think of her'''.
