Chapter 4
Catching up with the past(2)
He looked at the picture in the magazine, recalling the day it had been taken. It was one of the landmarks of his professional achievements where he had been able to capture a major share of a foreign market by a strategic takeover. Lavanya was one his most prized discoveries in the corporate world. A creative and clever minded lady, she had been with him since 5 years, declining better offers from his rivals and displaying an unspoken loyalty to him and the company. They were professionally well attuned, a fact quite visible and emotionally alike, as he had realized. She, like him, did not go overboard with her display of affections since they had started dating after mutually agreeing to test the limits of their compatibility. She had told him jokingly that her job left her with practically no time to socialize romantically and hence all the options she had were limited to his building only. He had replied that he was a bit tired of all the options being thrown at him and wished to put a limit to them.
He had not met Lavanya after his wedding as she was away on an assignment in Paris, overlooking the fashion show to be organized there. The event, though big, was an annual affair and nothing really required his direct involvement and thus there had been almost no communication between them. He was sure she must have heard of his wedding- it was grade one masala news and her reaction was something he dreaded and wished for at the same time.
Khushi dodged him and entered the room silently, sitting on the edge of the bed. He turned around to see her fidgeting with her dupatta and opened his mouth to say something but no words formed in his brain. What was he to say? That he hadn't seen his girlfriend since he married her and wasn't cheating on her? That this picture was taken before their wedding? To whom was he pledging loyalty to anyway, his wife or the relationship? Relationships can't be trusted, he had learnt a long time back. He was not used to giving explanations for his actions to anyone except perhaps his sister. He heard her voice before he framed an appropriate response to the situation.
"She really is your girlfriend, right?" she spoke in an uncertain voice.
"I don't know how to answer that question. Before we married, yes, she was my girlfriend. I haven't spoken to her since then." Honesty is the best policy, he decided.
"What did she say when you told her of this?"
"I didn't" he replied, the full implications of his actions hitting him hard in his face. She fell silent and left after a few moments, but not before he saw the displeasure and disbelief on her face. When she reached the doorway, she turned around and asked
"Why did you marry me if you can't even bear to tell her about the situation?"
"I' don't know. I won't cheat on you" he added, a desperate attempt at being human and sensitive. She nodded and finally left. The truth was that in those hours, he had picked up the phone to call her up, to ask for help and had been unable to reach her. After those 5 minutes of trying to call her, he had been ushered out and had simply given his consent to Nani. He should have asked for some time, told her that he needed to sort out things. He wondered if he really had been as innocent as he was trying to be.
Khushi quietly strode out into the garden, musing at this new development. So not only she was being thrust upon a man in a matter of minutes, she had also been a cause of a break up. She thought of the woman again. The corporate star, like him. She could feel a headache building in the base of her neck, a bad indication. She wondered why she didn't feel contempt or even anger. It was slightly unnerving, the lack of reaction and the confusion. What next? Divorce? Annulment? She shook her head and wondered why her husband was being this way. He didn't seem to be the type who stalled things or hesitated against society. Infact, this quality really caught eye- he was perhaps one of the very few truly fearless people she had come across in her life, unlike the ones who hid theirs under velvety cushions of overconfidence and luxury.
Her train of thought was broken by Anjali Di's voice who asked her if she was up to some cooking. She agreed readily. Anjali was good company- gentle, caring and did not pry. Not with her atleast. With Arnav, she was every bit involved as a mother would be, it reminded her of her own jiji.
Draping her dupatta over her shoulder and tying a knot behind her back, she geared up for cooking. Because other things could always wait.
A/N- Apologies for putting this on hold for such a long time. I hope this time am able to continue it.
