If it were not for the fact that Shyam is evil incarnate, the scene with the gift, Anjali and Shyam would be almost romantic... Two lovers being kept away by family... And I guess he is appealing to that sense of romance in her and somewhat in Dadi also...

Please don't hate me for putting Shyam, Anjali and romance in the same sentence... Even I'm creeped out!!!!
