Chapter Twenty Six: Samandar
Maanvi ran across the yellow sand, her long hair dancing against the soft breeze of cool air. She screamed: letting the frustration leave her petite body. She sat on the edge, her feet dipping into the warm water. Viraat walked towards her, smiling at her carefree attitude. He sat beside her, not taking his eyes off her.
"What? Why are you looking at me like that?" Maanvi asked, and then looking back at the horizon ahead.
"You're so different to everyone." He replied.
"You always say that." She noted.
Viraat put his hands together and bit his lip, "Yeah, but no matter how many times I say it I just can't get it through. You're different. And the more I spend time with you, the more I notice it."
A gust of wind flew by Maanvi's hair, letting it dance to the tunes of the atmosphere. "And you'll never meet anyone like me in your all life. I'm one of a kind." She said smiling.
A strand of her hair fluttered near her eyes, and she found it difficult to move it back. Without thinking, Viraat moved it with his hands; an instant eye lock. He slowly pushed the strand of hair behind her ears, looking intently into her chocolate brown eyes.
"Darling, remember us when we were young and in love?" An elderly man said as he walked hand in hand with his wife, passing near Viraat and Maanvi.
"Who says we still aren't young and in love?" The woman said briskly.
The man laughed softly, "I'm sorry jaan." He walked near the two friends who had gazed out of their eye lock. "Son, never say anything bad to your love. Women are more aggressive these days." He said to Viraat, putting his hand on his shoulder.
"Uncle. Erm," Maanvi struggled to say anything.
Viraat noticed that she was feeling uncomfortable, "Actually Uncle, we're not together."
The woman beside the man sat down next to Maanvi, "That's what you say now, but believe me your destiny is intertwined with his."
Maanvi gave an uneasy smile, refusing to look up at Viraat. The elder couple left them, laughing and smiling whilst giving them their blessing.
Viraat laughed. Maanvi gave him a look. "Don't you find it funny, Maanvi? Every time we're together someone always blesses us. It's like kismet is trying to get us together. It never happened with Maya…" His words halted to a silence.
"Do you miss her?" She said quietly, finally looking into his eyes.
"No. I don't." He said after a minute of thinking. "I thought I loved her, but it was true love. And if I never loved her, then why should I miss her?"
Maanvi smiled and gave him a slight nudge.
"After all, when I'm with my wife. Why should I think of another woman?" He teased.
Maanvi made a face, "You better not!" She threatened whilst laughing.
Staring into the bright blue sky, Maanvi didn't notice when she placed her head upon his shoulder. He rested his cheek on the side her head and closed his eyes.
The sound of seagulls, the waves of the sea and children playing was heard through the beach. Drops of water splashed onto their feet, it's becoming cold waves sending a shiver to their spines. Viraat and Maanvi stayed, unmoved in their spot with their eyes closed almost sleeping. The bright day crept into the evening; the bustling sound of Mumbai awoke them from their slumber.
"Oh no, it's nearly 7pm." Viraat said looking at his phone.
"What? We've been here for hours?" Maanvi asked and was replied with a growl coming from her stomach.
Viraat chuckled, "Come on, let's get you some food." He said and they started to walk back into the dazzling Mumbai night.
They stopped at a restaurant where Viraat left Maanvi for a few minutes to call his brother. "Bhai, I'm going to stay in Mumbai for a bit. I called Maanvi and she decided to stay at her aunt's house." He lied.
"Viraat, okay. I'll tell Ma, anyway when do you think you'll be back?"
"Urm, I don't know. Maanvi wanted to stay with her aunt for a bit and I think it'd make much sense if I wait until she's ready to come home. After all, her belongings are still at home and she's never travelled from Mumbai to Chandigarh before –"
"Don't worry Viraat, no worries. Okay, I'll call you later. Take care of yourself okay?" Viren said.
Viraat sighed as he hung up the phone. He didn't actually like lying to Viren but what could he do? He couldn't betray Maanvi's trust by telling him the reason why they came to Mumbai. Realising that Maanvi was alone, he quickly walked inside the restaurant where Maanvi was seated on an empty table.
"Is everything alright?" She asked.
Viraat nodded, "Yeah, have you ordered?"
"Uh, yeah. Sorry I ordered without asking you…"
"Don't worry, I don't care." He smiled.
The pair took part in light conversation. After they were finished Viraat paid the waiter for their services and they walked back into the car.
"Viraat, now what? We have to come back tomorrow and we still have the night to go."
"Looks like we'll have to spend the night in some hotel."
Maanvi groaned quietly, spend the night and that to with Viraat? She thought.
