Author's Note: Thank you for your comments! Loved them, and about the friend thing well, that's old news. Anyways, because I loved the response here is the next episode/chapter. 2,095 words (are you proud of me? LOL)
Maanvi ran upstairs, not even bothering to wipe her tears. That had done it, those harsh words your parents seemed like she had been hit with a million bullets. Her memories of her parents were starting to fade and she was scared that she'll forget about them forever. Scared, she opened her luggage to find an envelope. Opening it, she held the few pictures of her parents: the first on her second birthday.
*Flashback*
"Maanvi, where are you?" The mother called, looking for her child in an innocent game of hide and seek. The mother looked everywhere that she could think of and became frantic when she couldn't find Maanvi. "MAANVI!" She shouted. No response.
"Mahinder!" She called her husband, tears forming in her eyes. She was scared of what had happened to her child.
The terrified father ran out of his room to his wife's tears, "What happened Jhanvi?" He asked trying to calm her.
"Maanvi, I can't find Maanvi!" She shouted, looking around for anywhere that she may had missed.
"Maanvi!" Mahinder started yelling, where was she?
Suddenly Beeji came out with a younger Madan, "What happened? Why are you two shouting?"
"Ma, I can't find Maanvi anywhere." Jhanvi said getting restless.
"What? Look, she should be here!" Beeji replied worried.
"Let's ask Pinky if she's seen her," Madan answered keeping calm.
The family members ran to Pinky's room where the just pregnant woman was sitting on her bed. There next to her, Maanvi lay sleeping on her side. Jhanvi look a deep breath and thanked her luck that Maanvi was found. Pinky laughed.
"Poor Maanvi, playing for so long has made her so tired that she slept next to me." Pinky said caressing Maanvi's hair.
Jhanvi ran towards her, like any mother who had just found her child and took her into her arms, "Never leave me." She whispered. Mahinder walked towards his wife and held Maanvi's other side. The three of them were engrossed together that they didn't realise when Pinky had taken a picture, the one that Maanvi held today.
*End Flashback*
"But, Ma, Papa. When did I leave you? You were the one that left me right?" She sniffed, kissing her parent's picture.
The next picture was a happier one: it was when Maanvi was about three and her parents had taken her to see the beach. That day was the most happiest day of her life, nothing could have beaten it.
*Flashback*
"Mama! Look I built a big sandcastle!" The three year old Maanvi exclaimed happily.
"Darling, this is a really nice castle!" Jhanvi said.
"Yes, when I get older I will live her, you and papa!" Maanvi said whilst placing a small flag on top.
"Oh really?" Mahinder smiled.
"You always call me Princess, and now you're my King and Queen!"
"And your prince?" Jhanvi joked.
"My prince?" Maanvi said, and thought. "I'll think of a prince next time I come here, okay?" She said giggling.
"Okay my little Princess," Mahinder said picking Maanvi up into his lap. "Shall we go home? It's getting dark now."
Maanvi shook her head, "Please papa, please! Five more minutes!"
Not wanting to hurt her daughter's feelings, Jhanvi kissed her forehead, "Hm, okay five more minutes. Just for you!"
"YAY!" Maanvi jumped out and put up the finishing touches to her caste. It was perfect now. Fit for a princess and her parents.
*End Flashback*
But who would know that was the first and last time Maanvi had ever been to a beach? She loved the soft sweet sounds of the waves and the clear blue water, but ever since her parents disappeared, she promised herself that she'll never go to the beach, not until her parents are with her.
The last picture was taken just minutes before Jhanvi and Mahinder disappeared. Maanvi was four and was at home with her family, looking after the two month year old Daboo. Mahinder and Jhanvi were out enjoying their dinner after the family forced them to when Maanvi called them up. Maanvi wanted her parents to come home and she was getting restless without them. Her parents, not wanting to spend another minute without their princess ran to the car and starting driving. The night wasn't the best, it was cold and eventually starting raining, to their dismay. The journey home felt like it had been ages, but Maanvi kept on waiting. Even when the morning arrived, she was still there, waiting near the window for her parents. Beeji was concerned, and she went out to find Mahinder and Jhanvi, only to arrive, telling Maanvi that they have gone away on a holiday. Yet, Maanvi's heart couldn't believe in this. Days became weeks and weeks became months, and yet her parents still didn't arrive. By the time Maanvi became ten, she tried to keep the thoughts of her parents death away, rumours which were building up in the neighbour's mind. But Maanvi never lost hope, she knew it in her heart that her parents were out there, trying to reach out to her daughter, she just needed to know where to look, that was all.
Maanvi sniffed and wiped the remaining tears, she took out the letters that she had stolen from her mother's box. There was a letter from the young Mahinder to the young Jhanvi, a couple of days before their wedding.
Dear Jhanvi,
I can't believe that we're getting married. Am I dreaming? No, I probably am. I'm getting married to a beautiful person like you, this should surely be a dream. Your smile, your eyes, your sweet laugh, I love you Jhanvi. I've always loved you, ever since we were friends from younger age, I had always loved you. I just can't believe, that that girl who everyone had a crush on, was going to be mines. Mines. I just can't get used to that. Remember when you used to say that we will have little children running around the house? I just can't wait for that day. That day when we were sleep together and wake up together, our children with us. So, enjoy your last few days of being Miss Jhanvi Sharma because in exactly 48 hours you will be Mrs Jhanvi Chaudary.
Forever yours,
Mahinder Chaudary.
Maanvi smiled, she couldn't help but noticed how her name where her parents together, Mahinder and Jhanvi: Maanvi.
Maanvi took out the next letter: one addressed to her mother, from a friend. It was received in the year 1991, a couple of months after Maanvi was born.
January 1991
Jhanvi,
How are you? How is everyone back home? And how is she?
I'm sorry Jhanvi but I can't face her, after what I've done. I just can't.
Thank you so much for being there, you are a true friend.
Yours, P.M.
November 1992
Jhanvi, it would have been her birthday today right? A whole year old.
Tell your daughter a happy birthday from me okay?
Yours, P.M.
May 1993
Jhanvi, My daughter has been going crazy asking about you. "Jhanvi Chachi" she'll shout out. How is yours? I wish I could see you, but I just can't. I love you so much okay? You're my best friend. Take care of yourself and her.
Yours, P.M.
Maanvi struggled to comprehend what the letter was about, why this P.M always said that Jhanvi was her best friend. Maanvi couldn't remember anyone who was called P.M, it was as if there was this secret being hidden. Although, Maanvi couldn't find out what.
She sighed and closed her eyes, flashbacks of a young Maanvi running around, her parents chasing her: wasn't that what they wanted? Then, how could they leave her? How could they? Maanvi was taken out of her trance by the sudden creak of the door, she was sitting on the floor, with her back onto the side of the bed when she saw Viraat walk inside with a sorry look.
"Maanvi." He said softly. He sat beside her, and which was when Maanvi realised that he had tears in his eyes.
"I'm sorry for hurting you." He said genuinely.
Maanvi smiled, "It's okay. You didn't know."
Viraat looked away and muttered, "Yeah I don't know." He looked towards her and wiped the tears from her eyes with his hand, "Tell me." He said.
Maanvi struggled to think of a response, did she even want to tell him? She looked at him in awe and how he had gotten upset because he unknowingly hurt her. She didn't know him well, but she felt as if she had known him for years, minus the annoying moments she had actually started to enjoy his company.
"Viraat." She whispered. "I'" She didn't know what to say. "I'I came to find my parents. They disappeared when I was four." She said trying not to cry. She pointed him to the pictures and the letter from P.M.
Viraat took a while to understand everything, but when he was done he looked at her and said, "I'm here. Anything you want. I'm here." And in that moment, Maanvi felt as if she was protected, she didn't feel scared, nor lost nor confused, she was content. She smiled back and whispered a thank you.
After talking about her parents to Viraat, she felt as if a burden had been lifted from her shoulders, she gave him a slight hug for comforting her. Viraat stood up and gestured his hand to her, helping her up and sitting on the bed.
"When will mission find Mr and Mrs C commence?" He said smirking.
Maanvi laughed, typical Viraat and his lame jokes. "We have to find this P.M." She said.
Viraat looked at the letter before replying, "Do you have an address?"
Maanvi scrunched her face and looked around to get her bag, finding an envelope, she managed to find an address. "But, this is addressed to a house in Mumbai." Maanvi stated.
Viraat took the address from her hands, "Don't worry, we'll find P.M," he assured her.
"Yeah, but I don't get why Ma would have a friend from somewhere in Mumbai." She said. "Wait, Ma lived in Mumbai for a few years with Papa but this was before I was born. That's probably why I can't remember her." Maanvi sighed.
Viraat noticed this and touched her face with his hands, "Don't worry Maanvi. I'm here okay?"
He looked at the time, it was past eleven and he yawned.
"It's getting late, we should sleep." Maanvi said.
"Yes that's true, wifey." He teased. Maanvi blushed.
"Shut up, that's over now. We are no longer husband and wife okay?" She said sternly with a hint of humour in her voice.
"Hm, one day. One day." He winked at her.
"You're so cheesy, and stop winking your eye will fall out."
"I'm not cheesy, you're the only one I made my wife, I swear." He put his hands together.
"Yes yes. That's what they all say." Maanvi said pulling Viraat up from the bed.
He stopped and pulled her towards him, "I'm not lying." He whispered subtly.
Maanvi blushed but then rolled her eyes and pulled him harder, "Okay goodnight."
"Goodnight baby, love you!" Viraat joked.
Maanvi opened the door and pushed him out, "Love you not." She said and closed the door, laughing her way to her bed. For the first time since she had arrived in Chandigarh, she had the best sleep ever. She no longer dreamt about her lost parents and sad moments but rather how Viraat made her laugh. No matter how much she would deny, she knew that deep down she liked him. He was her closest friend, even though she had just known him. She smiled as she remembered how Viraat had made her smile and how he had assured her that he'll help her. She felt a strange tingling sensation, but took no notice as she slept.
Over on the other side, Viraat sighed as he reminisced the moments spent with Maanvi, how he made her cry unfortunately but then made her smile. One thing that was true was how he had told her that he had never made anyone else his wife, literally or not. He smiled at how she kept denying that she liked him, in neutral sense. He liked her, yep. He did. Viraat blushed as he thought about her smile and the way she'd blush when he was close to her. Did he like her more as friends? No, this was simply an infatuation, right?
