It's said that Dil Chahta Hai was the film that launched Saif Ali Khan's career.

I know it was the biggest hit for him, but Saif made 25 films before Dil Chahta Hai!

Before Dil Chahta Hai, he was seen more as a sidekick of Akshay Kumar than a lead actor. Yes, he may have had a few hits but those were not attributed to him. He also looked quite effeminate. But in DCH, he sort of rose like the phoenix from the ashes. That's why DCH is attributed as his second coming.

That is true...

but somethingg tells me that directors used to sign them for the sake of having someone in there. He didn't have too many movies where he was the solo male lead (correct me if I am wrong), and he seemed like a bankable enough dude. Maybe the movies he starred in did healthy business...

either that, or some sort of spirit was definitely with him that saw him through the dull 90s haha. His appeal, his standing as an actor, his image, all of it REALLY sky-rocketed after Dil Chahta Hain...

so yes, it indeed is a mystery of how he kept getting so many projects before his big one.

Honestly, I didn't take much notice of Saif as an actor until I watched him in Ek Haseena Thi, he was awesome in that movie.

You should listen to what Saif has to say about his career before. He himself ridicules his looks, his voice, and his acting.

He says he absolute career low, was when he had a pull a rat outta his pants (literally) as a phallic symbol in a song and chase a girl with it, coz you know, the 90s were all about double meaning songs 😆

Before DCH: Saif was Akki's No 2 heroine (No 1 was and will forever remain Rekha). Then he suddenly became a man for reasons still unknown (to all except SRK and Kantaben).

I've been trying to youtube this song for the longest time, but I dont remember the name. He just mentioned in at the HT summit, and referred to it as the "rat song" and the lowest of his dark days.

But yeah, it was a real rat! Kareena looked positively grossed out 😆
