July 20, 2012, (Sawfnews.com) - Saif Ali Khan will be eligible to become the custodian of Bhopal's princely waqf properties, Auqaf-e-Shahi, even after marrying a non-muslim Kareena Kapoor. His sister Saba Sultan, a 30-year-old designer, is the current Mutawalli (custodian) appointed by father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi.
Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan's mother Sajida Sultan was the Begum of Bhopal, the second daughter of the last ruler of Bhopal,Nawab Hamidullah Khan. Sajida married Mansoor's father, Iftekhar Ali Khan, the Nawab of Pataudi in 1939.
The religion of Saif's wife is irrelevant towards taking on the royal duties in support of charity, says chairman of Madhya Pradesh Waqf board, Gufran Azam.
"Assuming that Saba Sultan, the current Mutawalli (custodian) of Auqaf-e-Shahi steps down, Saif can become the Mutawalli," Azam told TOI.
"Nawab Mansoor Ali Khan's daughter Saba Sultan is the custodian and would remain so even after her marriage. The wedding of Saif and Kareena does not affect the Saba's role as the head of royal waqf," he added.
Auqaf-e-Shahi properties worth hundreds of crores of Rs extend from Bhopal to Saudi Arabia consisting of mosques, shrines, shops and guest houses which are dedicated to religion and not personal wealth.
Pataudi appointed Saba as the custodian in 2008 because she was the only non-filmy relative and hence away from any controversy by the religious heads.
Sounds like a shrewd move for the late royal and cricket captain.
