Chapter 38
Teri zulfon se judaai toh nahi maangi thi
Kaid mangi thi, rihaii toh nahi maangi thi
Ye rat itni tanha kyu hoti hain
Apne kismat se sabko shikayat ktu hoti hain ?
Ye kismat bhi ajib khel khelti hain..
Jise hum pa nahi sakte,
Usise hi bepanah mohabbat kyu hoti hain?
(By Ash {Kawaii_geet})
Geet was holed up in her bedroom when she heard her Dad walking in with Rahul.
She flew downstairs hoping against hope that they have not talked to Maan yet. But her hope was dashed completely as he heard him talking to her mom
"Humne Savitri Deviji aur Maan se baat kar li hai. They will get the divorce papers tomorrow."
[We have spoken to Savitri Deviji and Maan. They will get the divorce papers tomorrow.]
Rano was horrified and she tried to still salvage the situation – "Yeh app kya keh rahe ho ji. Shaadi koi aisa rishta hai jo aise tut jaye. Please aap samajhiye ki Geet Maan ko bahut pyar karti hai. She will not be happy if this relationship breaks."
[What are you saying? Marriage is not a relationship which can break like this. Please understand that Geet loves Maan a lot. She will not be happy if this relationship breaks.]
Mohinder sat down and responded calmly – "I know ki tumhein yehi lag raha hi ki maine jo kuch bhi kiya gusse mein kiya. It is true that I am very angry at Maan but more than that I love my daughter. What he did has no bearing in front of my daughter's happiness. For her happiness, if need be I can even beg in front of him.
But abhi tumne hi kaha na ki shaadi ka rishta aise hi nahi tut ta. Sach toh yeh hai ki usne kabhi yeh rishta joda hi nahi."
[I know that you think whatever I did, I did out of anger. It is true that I am very angry at Maan but more than that I love my daughter. What he did has no bearing in front of my daughter's happiness. For her happiness, if need be I can even beg in front of him.
But just now you only said that marriage ties don't get broken like this. Truth is he never built this tie]
Geet sobbed loudly as tears streaked down Mohinder's eyes.
Mohinder looked at her and walked to her - "Agar mere bas mein hota toh teri khushi tere kadmon mein laa deta beta. Par pyaar pe kisi ka zor nahi."
[If it was under my control, I would have placed you happiness in your feet. But there is no control over love.]
He lovingly patter his hand over her head – "I promise ki wahi hoga jo tu chaiyegi. Koi zabardasti nahi karega tujh par beta. But I asked for divorce because I know that some relationships can not be built with stubbornness. Tali ek haath se nahi bajti. Chaar mahine mein jo rishta nahi juda woh ab kya badhega. But if you still have hope...Agar tujhe koi bhi umeed hai toh tera ek ishaara hi kaafi hoga. I will not say or do anything you don't want."
[I promise whatever will happen, will happen according to your wish. There will be no pressure on you. But I asked for divorce because I know that some relationships can not be built with stubbornness. You can not clap with one hand. Relationship which did not start in 4 months, how will that move forward now? But if you still have hope...if you have any ray of optimism, your one indication will be enough. I will not say or do anything you don't want.]
Geet wanted to deny vehemently. Mere thought of loosing Maan killed her and she shook her head but words died in her throat. Somewhere, Maan's happiness and wishes mattered more to her even now and she remembered her own words when she told Maan that she was giving him freedom. Now her father had gone ahead and given it to him explicitly. How could she deny Maan his happiness for her own selfish reasons? That will not be love.
Her father was right. She can not continue to live in her own dream world. It was time to face the reality and take next steps to ensure what ever remained was based on strong foundation and not on her wishes, dreams and desires only. Maybe that was the problem from the very beginning. Earlier also, she had forced her decision on him. It was what she wanted not him. He may have taken a wrong step of marrying her without his full acceptance but she just added to that mistake by forcing this relationship on him.
Thinking above, she quietly went away to sanctuary of her room and lay limp in one corner. In the silent dark room, her sobs made noise and tears glistened as darkness engulfed not only the wet night outside but her heart as well.
Meanwhile Maan kept on driving. He stopped suddenly finding himself in the middle of ridge forest. He was very close to the area where they had come for picnic on Geet's birthdays. Even as Maan saw dangerously swaying Amaltas tress, he could hear Geet's laughter. She was twirling round as he shook the yellow flowers on her. Suddenly it started raining and though it was dark, she still twirled around drenching herself still smiling and giggling. As if in trance, Maan came out of the car and moved his hand to touch her but she vanished. Just then Maan realized he was all alone. He extended his arms as rain soaked him and his lonely pained soul.
He let out a scream as he was angry on himself. How could he let his Geet down? How could he turn her happiness into hurt and pain? Her tears still prickled his heart as she had given him his freedom.
"Mujhe freedom nahi chaiye. Mujhe bandhan chaiye…tumhaare pyar ka bandhaan. Don't leave me and go Geet. Don't."
[I don't want freedom. I want bondage…bondage of your love. Don't leave me and go Geet. Don't.]
He closed his eyes as tears rolled down his face mingled with rain. He remembered each and every moment as he had married her. He remembered how he had shattered her love filled heart by his cruel words. He remembered her going away like a dead body and coming back to him as if nothing happened. He remembered her laughing and playing with Vicky. He remembered each and every moment they spent together. Holi…picnic…swimming…coffee. Her care, concern and love.
He opened his eyes. Rain had finally stopped and clouds seem to be clearing with same haste as they had loomed with. He could even see moon peeking out of the clouds though not completely.
As the storm stopped, he started hearing sounds of crickets and owls. It seemed as if all the tress and grass had been washed with rain removing the dust. It seemed so peaceful and Maan felt the throbbing nature as trees now swayed gently in the cool breeze. Wildlife went about their way as if the storm had never happened. If anything, rain seemed like a boon, and even in the darkness of night, he felt nature welcoming the monsoon.
Slowly his heart calmed down and a small smile curved his lips.
"I did not learn anything from you Geet in so many days. If you were there in my place, you would have just got up and gone about achieving your dreams after every storm like it never came. Her smiling face after his every selfish act came to his mind. Be it as big as his suhagraat fiasco or as small as his denial for her making his coffee. Be it seeing Poonam's photograph in the bedroom or in his wallet. Every time, she just bounced back, keeping her self-belief alive.
Yes, it was time he learnt from her. She never left his side when he was in the pathos of darkness. She stood by him steadfastly lending him support and unconditional love. Today she was broken and it was time for him to step into her shoes and stand with her. He will do whatever it takes to build this relationship again. Not words, but he will let his actions tell her that he truly loved her and whatever may happen he will not let go off her. He will stay with her till she finds her way back in his arms and heart. He will not let anything come in between them."
Like a man with purpose and full of determination he walked back to his car. He felt sudden tranquility evade his heart as he found his destination and the way forward. Without any further delay, he drove to Handa Haveli.
Mohinder was shocked to see soaked Maan in front of him in his living room at almost 11:00 in the night. But Maan could care less at Bauji's expression because for him these were desperate times and he could not let Geet go without fighting for his love.
Both were jerked out of their thoughts at Rahul's rude voice - "What do you want now?"
Maan ignored Rahul and folded his hands in front of Mohinder – "Please Bauji. I will not say sorry as it is a very small word for what I have done. But please. Mujhe Geet se baat karni hai. Let me talk to her."
Mohinder asked him softly but with grit – "Kyon? Do you think she is not enough upset. Moreover you got what you wanted so what more is left to talk about."
"Please Bauji, I want to talk to my wife because whatever may have happened, she is still my wife. I will not let go off this relationship till Geet tells me herself. But other than that nothing and no one can force me to stay away from her. I want to talk to her. Please. I can never hurt her. No, I have probably hurt her but I will not hurt her anymore. Please."
Rano stood next to Mohinder – "You promised to let Geet decide what she wants. Let them talk please."
Maan looked at gratitude at his mother in law as finally Mohinder relented as nodded his head in yes.
But he stopped in track as he heard Mohinder's voice – "Keep the door open. I want to be able to hear if my daughter needs my help."
Maan closed his eyes in pain and clenched his fist but just nodded his head and walked to Geet's bedroom.
