Chapter 11 – Kashi Chechy is a… Puli
He didn't follow her right away, but not because she ordered so, but because… well, the effects of kissing and biting the skin of a woman like her were likely the same across the males of the species, and he certainly was no exception. It was simple physiology… It was a miracle that the chit hadn't noticed, but she was turning out to be a bit more… oblivious… in such matters than he had given her credit for. I mean, who above the age of sixteen didn't know about hickeys or that biting and sucking on skin would leave a mark!
Either way, he was glad that she took off the way she did. He followed when he thought he was presentable and it took some walking, but he eventually caught up to her enough that he could see her walking in that rushed gait of hers some distance ahead of him. He slowed his pace to fall back. He was too busy side-stepping the twigs and stones on the ground in his bare-feet that he didn't notice the kid until he heard, "Chettan evidunna?" (Where are you from bhai?)
He looked over and saw a boy about 8 or 9, dressed in an old but clean white t-shirt and a pair of brown shorts with suspenders that was about two sizes big for him and had clearly seen better days. He was rolling an old bicycle tire with a long twig that he held in his hand.
"Malayalam arriyilla." (I don't know Malayalam). He said, using one of the few stock Malayalam phrases that he had learned to navigate his way here.
"Arriyilla." The kid mimicked what he said and laughed out loud. "Arriyilla… hahahaa." He repeated.
He looked at the kid in annoyance, "What's so funny?" he asked in English.
"Ohhh.. English case aanalle! Aah, athu shari." (Oh, English. I see… I see…)
"You speak English?" He asked the boy, once again in English. The boy laughed again before nodding and saying, "Ente chetta… enikariyaatha baashayundo?" (Ai bhai… There are no languages I don't speak.)
He looked at the boy in confusion and the boy winked and answered in English, "Little, little."
He gave the boy a faint smile before continuing to walk and the boy fell into step beside him, much to his surprise.
"No shoes?" the boy asked pointing at his feet.
He looked down at his own feet and then at the boy's, which was similarly shoe-less. "No shoes?"
The boy laughed again in answer.
He pointed at the tire and asked, "What's that for?"
The boy looked up at him and shrugged, "Chumma!"
"Chumma?" he asked, his eyes narrowing.
"Chumma… Chumma is…" he shrugged again as if that answered the question.
"Chumma means…" he shrugged and looked at the boy in question. And the boy nodded.
"Chumma means just because?" he asked the boy again and the boy gave him a blank look as if he didn't really understand what just because meant.
He laughed for some reason… a kiss in his language meant just because in theirs… he laughed again, now to himself.
After a few minutes, the boy asked, "Name?"
He looked down at the boy and thought of that for a moment. His Name. He didn't remember the last time he had to give his name to someone. When he did, it was always Arnav Singh Raizada. It seemed a bit… too much… right now.
"Chotey" he said impulsively, regretting it almost immediately. Only his sister had ever called him that. And he had never ever used that name himself.
But the word was out and he couldn't take it back. He saw the kid nod his head as if the name agreed with him.
"I…" he pointed at himself and said, "Nalan."
Nalan. It was an old name… he smiled at the kid and repeated, "Nalan."
The boy nodded and smiled.
He noticed that they could no longer see Kashi and he quickened his pace. The boy kept up. They pulled up shortly when they heard noises, however.
"Alla, namboothiri kochaage minungiyallo. Ithentha vellathilirangi angane tanne keri ponno?" ("Ah, you're looking good, girl. What happened? Did you go into the water and come out just like that.")
There were two young men in their early 20's sitting on a log to the side, both passing a lit beedi back and forth between them. Arnav pulled up to a tree and stopped the boy next to him.
He saw her ignore him to keep walking, but the man who had spoken before called out in a distinctly taunting tone, "Kochinte appan etho oru valiya pathrasukaran Hindi-karane veetti ketti tamasipichundennu kettallo. Sariyano koche? Ithippo enthina Delhi vareyokke pone? Nammude nattilumundallo nalla kashukaru. Athum kochinepoloru sundari-kuttiyakumbam valia valia aashanmaru vannu queue nikkum!" (I heard that your father has housed some big-shot Hindi dude in your house. Is it true? If so, why the need to go all the way to Delhi? There are wealthy folks here too. And when it's a beauty like you, they will come and line up in a queue outside your house.")
His taunt made him friend laugh in that way in which side-kicks always laughed.
"Shey! Aa Nayinthe mon!" ("Son of a Bitch!") he head the kid say and looked down at him, not understanding exactly what had been said, although he could gather from the kid's tone that he had just cursed. And he could gather from the words Hindi and Delhi used by the guy that he himself was somehow involved in the taunt.
"Sundari-kalkkannu vila parayunengil changateede ammaye kazhinje bakkiyarum ullu!" ("If it's beautiful women who are attracting such notice, then your mother would lead the list, my friend.") she called out and heard both the kid and the side-kick laugh out loud.
He was about to ask the boy what she said, but then decided against it. It was her tongue; he could only imagine that it had been something quite vicious.
The guy who had taunted her looked back and forth between the side-kick and Kashi before he rose from the log in anger and said, "Edi!" (Edi is a way of addressing a girl in a very informal way.)
"Dey,chekka. Edi podi-nnoke ninte veetillolore vilichal mathi. Vallodathem penungale vilicha chilappam avaru kai vachunnu varum. Oru nalla tekkekattadichal parannu pokunna sharirom vechondu abhyasathinu vannekunnu. Ninnekkalum pulikomban mare kandittundu njan. Pinnale!" (Hey boy, Save your edi-podi terms for your family. If you take such liberty with women from other families, they may be tempted to beat the shit of you. Look at you, coming to fight with a body that looks like it could blow away if a good wind strikes from the south! I have dealt with men far more daring than you with no issue. So, don't mess with me.")
"Ee Kashi chechy aalu kollatto. Raavile tanne pulicha theriye parayu!" (Kashi didi is a real piece of work. What incredible curses she comes up with so early in the morning.") the boy said and Arnav looked down at him and raised an eyebrow in question.
Kashi had already started walking away, leaving the sputtering guy behind, and Nalan looked at her retreating back and pointed with a smile and muttered, "Ithippam engana ee chettane paranjonnu manasillakkuka…" (How will I make this bhai understand… hmm…) before looking up finally and saying, "That girl, Kashi chechy…" The boy paused again and murmured to himself, "Puli-de English entha?" ("What's the English for a Tiger?") before looking up and saying, "Kashi chechy is a big… Puli."
"Puli?" He asked and the kid nodded before spreading his elbows out and saying, "GRRR… Puli!"
"Lion?" he asked. The boy shook his head and repeated the gesture.
"Tiger?" he asked and the boy nodded with a smile.
"She is a tiger?" he asked and the boy nodded again and said, "Yes, yes. Tiger. Puli."
He felt a laugh at the back of his throat.
Puli and Chumma…
What a funny language!
