@subrosa

I know women used to pick fruits etc. But as I said, considering those times, women's work was not considered important. Things like defending against wild animals or other attacks or lifting heavy wood, stones and hunting down other animals for food etc. became to be considered more important.

This is the root cause why women were exchanged like property. Heredity, property, ownership etc. are causes, but they come later. Basic discrimination against women stems from their lack of physical strength and their limited function in ancient times.

Back then humans were like animals only. In lions, the lioness hunts for food. But the male lion is incharge of the family and male lion even overpowers the lioness or kills her if enraged. Aggressive behaviour of the male over female is seen in animals also.

But people have labelled it as some law of nature forgetting that humans are not animals at all and in humans not everything is governed by physical strength and brute force.

Scriptures have many positives about them, no denying about it. All I am saying they should not be taken totally at face value or some divine word.

And people claiming to follow scriptures are hypocrites! They follow even religion selectively!

@TM: Our ancient scriptures are multi-faceted, there are superior theories of philosophy, art, science and metaphysics on the one hand, and socio-religious injunctions that should horrify any inhabitant of the modern world, on the other. I think, as far as social norms are concerned, we must rely on our conscience and what is considered right or fair now, in the 21st century, rather than on books that were written 2500 years back under very different circumstances.

Couldn't agree more!!!

I am simply appalled at the narrow-minded offense-taking that people seem all-too-eager to do on behalf of their religion/tradition...I can't understand how people can be so incapable of seeing the grotesque unfairness of these iniquitous and exploitative systems? What does it take?

I don't know! I can't even say education, since so many of the educated urban people consider marrying out of one's caste a sin...even those who are apparently unaffected by the touch and food-related taboos. May be a new set of highly stringent laws!

That doesn't seem to have had any effect in the last 60+ years! I still can't get over the Benares pandit who said that he doesn't "believe" in the constitution because it's "adharmic"...😕 What does one *do* with people like this? How do we convince people that we cannot/should not look to ancient and regressive texts to tell us how to live just because someone decided they are part of "tradition". We must emphatically discard those values and ought to have done so already...

How do we convince people that we can evolve and live by a set of values informed by *today's* conceptions of human rights and dignity?

I think responses and intensity of response to each episode of Satyamev Jayate also reflects mindset of our people.

- Medical malpractices. By far the one episode which got most response ever! Only medical fraternity was vehemently against Aamir for ''defaming'' them. Otherwise, whole public supported him and some doctors and docs' organisations also dared to support him.
Here are positive voices also, but I hope their support goes beyond just appreciative tweets to Aamir Khan and SJ's website.

Just wanted to share this.
Dr. Vispi Jhoki writes, ' Aamir Khan's last episode of Satyameva Jayate dealing with unethical medical practice has raised the hackles of many of my medical friends, especially the younger generation. However, much against the tide, I will rise to Aamir's defense.'
Read his thoughts, solutions and ideas on the episode here.
