Responses to Satyamev Jayate & people's mentality

I think responses and intensity of response to each episode of Satyamev Jayate also reflects mindset of our people.

- Almost everyone supported Aamir in case of female foeticide and till date the amount of donation generated by SJ remains highest for that issue.

- Many people felt ''offended'' or simply refused to watch when he raised issue of Child Sex Abuse. Some even felt they had exaggerated the issue and ''unnecessarily'' instilled fear of even family members (still behaving as if CSA does not happen or happens too rarely).

- The response to Dowry one was oddest! I noticed even educated women (professors armed with PhDs!) calling it a ''boring'' or ''khaas nahi'' or ''exaggerated'' episode!!😲 Appalling to see how many people did not consider dowry or expensive weddings etc. a big issue. And how many believed it was a tradition or a status symbol to give and take massive amounts of dowry.

- Medical malpractices. By far the one episode which got most response ever! Only medical fraternity was vehemently against Aamir for ''defaming'' them. Otherwise, whole public supported him and some doctors and docs' organisations also dared to support him.

- Intolerance to love episode was lapped up by the youth. But older generation did not quite take to it, rather they thought Aamir was ''encouraging'' youth to ''run away'' and get married without taking family's wishes into account! 🤢 Religious fanatics also against it.

- The episode on disability mostly had positive vibe to it. Sadly, instead of focusing on what could be done for the disabled, people only felt pity or felt grateful for what they had (plainly put, ''Thank God we are not disabled!"). The worst thing which crept up here also was religious fanatics reaction to Satyamev Jayate attacking notion of linking disability to ''punishment for sins'' in past life. What SJ did was correct. Still fanatics accused ''Muslim'' Aamir Khan for ''insulting'' their ''karma theory'' - which neither Aamir nor any panelist did on the show.

- Domestic Violence - The reactions to this episode clearly showed what a twisted and misgynist society we are!🤢 This episode had generated lowest amount for donations in history of Satyamev Jayate till now (it is the lowest amount in all episodes of SJ).

Many blatantly said the victims featured on the show were fake as they had ''no visible mark'' of injury or violence, Aamir was ''encouraging'' women to beat up their husbands, or Aamir and victims on the show were encouraging ''break up of family'' and divorce, Kamla Shastri and her comments are foolish - and the WORST one - ''aisi chhoti moti baatein toh har ghar mein hoti hi rehti hain, iska matlab yeh thode na ki jail le jao pati ko!'' 😡

Some said women do deserve to be beaten sometimes for their khit-pit. Many others said, this show was failure since it only focused on problems of women - who are ''just 50%'' of society and problem of ''just 50%'' are not issues of whole India. 😲

- Pesticide episode was thought to be ''ill researched'' by supporters of Green Revolution. Many didn't give a damn about that episode because they didn't understand or didn't want to understand the issue.

- Alcholism: Surprised at naivete of people! Many assumed it was against drinking altogether whereas it was just about alcohol addiction. Several people felt it was a non issue and drinking was no big deal. But in real life, I did notice people resorting to AA for help and coming out to discuss their problems of alcohol addiction.

- Caste/Dignity for all - This episode's reactions (at least till now) have been appalling at least online. So many think of it as non issue. So many religious fanatics accusing Aamir of insulting Hindu tradition or shastras - even as he highlighted caste discrimination across all religions.
So many saying dalits only have fun and get plum jobs and admissions due to reservations.

There are positive voices also, but I hope their support goes beyond just appreciative tweets to Aamir Khan and SJ's website.

OVERALL:

- Appalling to see journalists trying to bully Aamir Khan and discourage every celeb from what they think constitutes ''wading into their territory''. ''Me me mentality''. Means social issues are not important, ''we were the first ones to do it'' is important!

- Worst to see men dismissing all women's issues as non issues or ''not national issues'' and terming every women related episode as ''exaggerated''.😔

- Many women also didn't bother for episodes on issues like dowry. Only those who bore brunt of it, warmed up to that episode. The other so-called high class ones called it a bore (maybe because they consider taking higher amount of dowry with them as a sign of ''high class'').😒

- Indians once again show how they can't get their religious fanaticism out of their mind, can't judge anything without the religion glasses. Every episode is judged on what ''Muslim'' Aamir Khan is doing to other religions. Every time people with handles like ''Internet Hindu'' spend days tweeting against Aamir Khan and each episode. Oddly, Aamir even got insulted by Muslims for trying to ''defame'' their community by showing a Muslim victim in first episode of Satyamev Jayate! 👎🏼

- Viewership and even trending of Satyamev Jayate online kind of decreased from last week of June onwards. I think people have now begun to watch its repeats or on Youtube. Many do not watch it at original time of telecast now I guess. Satyamev Jayate doesn't take over Twitter and Google trends like it used to, in last two months. Its impact is great till date. But looks like people are not making it a priority, just catch it sometime later.

In my family, I notice only my mom and I take interest in this show. Dad and brother don't care anymore. Dad sometimes watches its repeat telecast. My uncle watches it religiously every Sunday, but never donates to NGOs featured on it (he's got means to donate, but somehow does not shell out for this!).

- Social activists are playing this ''me me'' game, by accusing Aamir of stealing their limelight. No wonder we have them writing articles calling SJ a poor effort, even though panelists from India's best institutions (IIT, NIMHANS etc.) and award winning NGOs are featured on the show. Is this how social change is done? By fighting for limelight and running down a good effort?🤢

- Too many skeptics we have. They do nothing except bashing government, media, activists and shows like SJ day in, night out and suspecting a conspiracy behind everything. Thanks to such people, IMO, no change is accomplished in our country. They will neither do anything themselves, nor let anyone else do anything.

- Maybe movie stars endorsing causes is a double edged sword, because some people can clearly not judge beyond fan/hater mentality. Bash SJ and even call all issues, as non issues because they are fans of Aamir's rivals.

- Overwhelming majority wants to live in a cocoon and dislikes SJ and Aamir for ''ruining'' their Sundays or giving ''gyan'' or opening textbooks on TV. Shamelessly they go on writing how they were asleep on Sunday or switching over to some music channel ''not giving a damn'' to show like SJ!🐷

- Whether we admit or not, many issues continue to remain unsolved because we consider them normal in name of culture/religion. Or think ours is still better while some other religion is worse! 🤪

- Amount of donations generated by SJ could have been way more had people sent SMSes or even cheques for donations than spending all time tweeting or SMSing jokes about it. The donations also show how we are ready to talk, but not ready to come forward and do our bit when needed. We will dissect what AK does or not. But won't do a thing ourselves.

- So-called educated people have intense ego on account of their qualifications and they wish to be only respected. They consider all issues associated with them as non issues. And bash not only Aamir Khan but even those who are not from their field. In case of doctors, the protesting doctors even labelled Dr. Devi Shetty a fake. No you know why nothing changes in India.🤡

- Going by articles and everything else, seems we Indians mostly have pessimistic or indifferent attitude towards issues and anything aimed at highlighting or correcting social problems. There is little or no action. Only argument or bashing. We also do not have the maturity to separate a person's religion and celebrity status from his work.

- We also have no respect for a good thing being done in our own country. While media in UK, USA, Australia and even Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal have appreciated Satyamev Jayate and expressed famous people in their country could unite and do something like Aamir Khan did for Satyamev Jayate - here we Indians are busy bashing the show and trying to prove it a flop (likes of Shobhaa De have written 2 articles against SJ without even watching the show).

- We don't think we as citizens have anything to do in case of social issues. We mostly attribute problems to someone else or link it with politics or shrug it all thinking it's not our job to solve anything, or that issues are textbook stuff for us. Nothing more.

- Some people expect only others to do everything. Even those who are supporting SJ and Aamir, keep writing to them to take up X, Y, Z topic or do ''more'' on a certain issue. Instead of devising ways on their own to take action!

- Lastly, people are TOO quick to judge and even quicker to dismiss. This explains knee-jerk reactions in case of medical issues episode and others.

- Importance of issues only matters to us to degree it affects us or suits our notions of religion, society and culture. Or in case of pesticides - our IQ or will to acquire knowledge.

I will just respond to some of this things ...
DOwry episode was the least impactful because it just dint go deep into the issue and did not leave as big an impact as it should have.
Todays issue was an eye opener but I feel that castesim is sooo deeply ingrained in our system that one programe is not going to change it .
You know sometimes movies have great topics but the diretion is such that it dosent leave th impact it should ...well i feel some of Aamir's episode fail in creating as much impact as they should.
And lately i am feeling that the episodes are slipping in impact or are heavily censored.
For exmple the alcoholism episode ..great topic as usual ..but it gave no guidelines to the family on how to deal with an alcoholic. There are deadiction centres but it was not made clear to the audience how to search for these centres ..how to send ur patient there ..how long does the therapy last. Another thing lackin in that episode was that today media is encouraging alcoholism as the hip thing to do and THIS is not a joke and THIS CERTAINLY IS NOT A STATUS SYMBOL ..as the youth of today are being le to believe. Dont you think Amirs show shd have coverd this ...??

And how can you just taalk about one side of the problem and not the other side...
We have dowry but we have a monsterous 498 A act which females are wrongly using to imprison the male side of the family
we have reservation for backward classes which increases every decade and create sunrest amongst the students and again creates a caste divide ..why are these sides of issues not highlighted ?
Neways one programe isnt gonna bring about change ... you have to make a go at it like oprah has been doing for yrsss ...
I wanna say one more thing these issues run deeper and uglier than whats shown even by Aamir .. do you know that worst than pesticides there are people pushing for Genetically Modified foods ...
And here I am not blaming Aamir ..this is just a constructive feedback and analysis .

- I agree on dowry issue. Its root cause and lack of exploration of misuse of dowry laws etc. But I am hinting more towards people's general perception that dowry is not a big issue!

- I don't think episode on DV was lacking. But I am clear that people's reactions to it were indicative of their shocking mindset.

- Satyamev Jayate has never claimed to change everything in one episode. So please quit making comments like one episode cannot change anything. It's a no-brainer.

- For alcoholism, they gave helpline numbers and ways to contact deaddiction centres. What else could they have done? And they cannot sit down discussing the complete modality of treating an alcoholic! That would take another new episode on it.

People's mindset that alcoholism is not an issue, that's what was wrong.

Maybe you did NOT watch that episode CAREFULLY, but Aamir and Javed Akhtar precisely discussed the point how media glamourised drinking and people assumed drinking as some cool factor or status symbol.

- One program is not even claiming to bring a change. Maybe you did not get the gist of what I was trying to discuss. Rather your response itself reflected the topic I was discussing.

I am pointing towards people's mentality towards social issues and anything done to address issues.

- I know worse things happen. But my point is people's reactions also show their own bias. Like many felt DV is a non issue or issues affecting women are not issues of national importance.

- Oprah may have done her show for years but have things changed in USA? No show can change things if people themselves are close minded and saddled with either laxity or stereotypes.

@annika20

I got nothing to say but "well said"

People like to be in denial...it is comforting.

Read the newspaper everyday ... it has all the topics covered by Aamir on the show. All it does is glamorizes all the topics of the news. What topic has Aamir raised until now that we don't read about everyday. There's some dowry issue somewhere, they have been rapes and child abuses, there have been doctors who are sued with medical negligence. We all know these things do exist and in a way have adapted to these things.

It might be popular in other countries like UK and US becoz the people there are not fully aware about what happens in India. A normal Indian living in India faces these issues regularly. They atleast have one person they know about who has gone through the issues discussed in SMJ.

In my opinion is not that great. It does not cover anything that we havent heard about. All it is doing is making Aamir richer by some Billions.

@locopoco

A HUGE LOL at people like you who say we know all about it!😆

If everyone knows then why do such problems continue to exist eh?! Why do many so-called educated people also indulge in propagating such foul practices?

And you are another user who perhaps did not get the gist of this topic. I pointed out at people's mindset which was revealed in their responses.

And your comment further proves my point!😃 Do nothing, or say ''we know all about it'' or dismiss any effort for social change and indulge in conspiracy theories.

Aamir Khan makes way more billions by means of his movies and even a single ad. He didn't need to make SJ to make money. His one film earns him more money than an entire season of Satyamev Jayate. Anyway, I don't want to get into discussions about this beaten to death thing.

I am hinting more at people's own mentality!

If we all are affected by the issues...if these issues happen all the time...WHY is no one doing anything to prevent these things?

"this is nothing new"...exactly, how can we focus on new issues when the old ones haven't been resolved yet? 😆

-_- haiye rabba...where is that brick wall...there goes my forehead *bam!bam!* 😆

feel terribly sorry for your comments ... you require shows like this to educate yourself. THese are very common problems that most of adult Indians know about. Aamir is only repeating what has been repeated zillion of times. There were shows before like the one hosted by Smirti Irani that highlighted such topics and had a panel of people to talk about (seems like you missed it since it wasn't hosted by a celebrity.) There's aapki adalat that talks about your legal rights (which many of the people aren't aware of)

You mean to say there's no one who know who has faced any of the problems mentioned by SMJ? Not one abortion case you have heard of. Not even a single family you have come across that pay more attention to their sons then daughters. Not one medical negligence case ... where due to some stupidity by the doc the person had to suffer more.

Sorry to say if you haven't then you live in a DREAM world.
