Yes our national anthem "Jana gana mana..." is composed by Kabiguru Rabindranath Thakur.

I can tell you about two tunes lifted from Rabindrasangeet.

"Tere mere milan ke yeh raina"- S D Burman :Original is "Jodi tarey nai chini go se ki"

"Choo kar mere mann ko Kiya tune kya ishara" - Bappi Lahiri. : Original is "Tomar holo shuru amar holo shara"

It's his tune, the hindi lyrics was written by some one else(it's not translated, the hindi lyrics is different from the Bengali ones). Many of us do not know that along with writing RNT used to compose tunes for his songs. He was a poet, writer-novelist, musician, painter, actor(acted in dramas/plays), I don't know if I have missed anything else.

I remember one more from film Yugpurush -

Bandhan khula panchi uda - Pagla hawa badal din e

Why are people forgetting these timeless songs? Classical, light, patriotic,
baul, bhajans, folk. Tagore has a diverse body of work where there is at
least one song to appeal to anyone. Plus the National Anthems of India and
Bangladesh are written by Tagore.

I find it shocking that all indians do not salute this treasure whether
Rabindrasangeet is your cup of tea or not.

Perhaps if Himmy did an album of Rabindrasnageet!

The Bengalis certainly cherish Tagore. Don't know about the rest of India. My father and my husband are diehard Tagore music lovers...they listen to his songs morning, day and night. It is said its the lyrical quality as much as the melodies. That makes the propogation of his music a problem, because the language barrier is bound to come up.

BTW I find his novels filmed by Satyajit Ray masterpieces. The all time great is supposed to be Charulata. You can watch it a zillion times and still want to see it again.

Only Satyajit Ray can do a justice to Rabindranath's novel. Only he can portrait the whole novel into a celluloid. I did not like much Ritupo*no's "Chokher Bali".

"Charulata" excellent. I too believe really no one(men) can understand women better than Rabindranath. Also "Teen kanya" and "Gharey Bairey" are good too. 'Teen kanya' has all the flavours. In "Gharey Bairey" the characters Sandeep-Nikhileh-Bimala were so real.

Because there are some great songs, but according to me, overall its not that great. I trained in both Western and Indian classical music, and while Tagore may be wonderful, he's not Beethoven.

Yes, Rabindranath is a part and parcel of Bengali culture. For every occation, every festival, every season we have a Tagore. And as long as Bengali culture will exist he will remain with us. I don't know there is something about him and his work(while writing also it gives me goosebumps). His work is like a ocean, so vast. I heard many people went mad doing research on him!!!!(Can you believe!!!!). I have myself witnessed one guy(I think many Calcuttans also have this experience) in the Rabindra Sadan-Nandan area wandering and reciting RNT's poems.

I agree may be musically all his songs are not so appealing, but some are really good. I don't blame your father and husband. Ranbindrasangeet has the soul that fills your heart. And his poems, song lyrics and literatures, I wish along with Bengali Rabindranath could himself write them all in Hindi and English. My favourite is "Sesher Kabita"(I have memorized each and every sentence and dialogues, I don't know how many times I've read it).
