Marathi Natya Sangeet:

This is a form of drama but only a musical one. It is actually a story evolved around songs, but all the songs are classically based. This form of musicals owe back its origins to more than a hundred years and most or almost all the songs have traditional classical compositions. The musical does not change its format or songs and even to this day the musical is performed in its true form. This means that even today when these musicals are held, the songs are as they were hundred years back. There are always exceptions to everything, but these sangeet nataks are preferred and patronized in its purest forms. The specialty used to be that there used to be long classical based songs to tell a story or simply to move the story forward. And almost all the actors ranging from the leads to the character actors or even sutradhars were all classically trained stalwarts.

There have been pioneers in this field who are revered even today. One amongst them was Master Deenanath Mangeshkar. Well known as Latadi's father, he was no less gifted. He had a massive natural range and it is said that when he used to record, the discs used to sometimes crack due to his high range.

I have uploaded one of his unforgettable renditions.

Master Dinanath Mangeshkar was born in the small village of Mangeshi in Goa in 1900 or 1901. He was the eldest son of Ganeshbhatt Abisheki and his wife, Yesubai Rane. He started taking singing and music lessons from Shri Baba Mushelkar at the tender age of five and he also became a disciple at Gwalior school. He joined the Kirloskar Sangeet Mandali and the Kirloskar Natak Mandali when he was barely 11 years old. He won the hearts of theatre-loving people with his good looks and his flawless and melodious voice so much that the then giant of the Marathi stage, the great Bal Gandharva publicly declared that he would welcome the entry of Dinanath in his organization "by throwing a carpet of rupee coins under his feet". He became the owner of a theatrical company which made him pitch his tent in nearly every town such as Pune, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara and Miraj. During the period of 1935, he produced 3 films in Marathi. Dinanath was not only well versed in Indian classical music but also in Sanskrit Astrology. He became famous for his exceptionally sonorous voice. Being his family surname first Hardikar, Dinanath was determined to take his first step in his professional life with a distinctive surname, which did not have the slightest shadow of his past. His ancestral village was called Mangeshi and the name of the family deity was Mangesh. So he adopted the surname Mangeshkar to signify he was the very hand of Lord Mangesh ('kar' is Sanskrit for hand).

Death
On Friday, April 24, 1942, Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar died of heart disease after being ill for a few weeks. Dinanath had departed leaving behind a stricken 32 year old Shevanti and a young 13 year old Lata Mangeshkar. He had accurately predicted his oncoming death as well as several accurate predictions about his life. For on Wednesday, he told his family that after 11:20 on Friday, he would be no more.

Varshaji,
Wasn't he a genius?
If I may, yes all the five siblings are gifted, especially Pt. Hridaynath Mangeshkar. He holds his own concerts and sings everything from pure classicals to light bhavgeet.
Regarding the classical info, I will have to check with the experts. But if you want I can upload some more of father or son, whomever you wish to listen to. 😊
