Hello everyone!

Just got done watching the first episode of this show - and although coming to the forum revealed quite a few review posts, I still felt compelled to make one of my own. For now - hopefully the mods don't treat multiple takes as spam.

In the meanwhile.

I'm going to put aside my few but fundamental points of contention with what I've perceived of the show from this first episode, and focus on instead on what really impressed me about it for now - because just the making and materializing of such a show on Indian telly deserves that kind of applause sans critique.

- Aamir is truly a man who understands the balance between commercial and concept. He's worked out the whole "concept" so meticulously, while simultaneously keeping the commercial backing so foolproof, that there genuinely is scope for this show to make a difference. Through several parts of the show, I asked myself, isn't that obvious? And the answer was staring back -obvious is irrelevant. What happens by launching a concept like this at SUCH a hugely commercialized pedestal on a channel like SP, with a production banner like AK production, with "philanthropy" partners like Reliance, is that he minimizes the chance of making lofty promises that fall flat. Money is a BIG part of bringing about any change, sadly or not, and I'm personally in great awe of how Aamir manages to balance a message oriented concept with a financial backup to see it through.

- Going back to meticulous. I LOVE the way he put that entire episode together. The research has been thorough, of course, but the presentation, the final execution of the years of work has been so algorithmic, it's IMPOSSIBLE to miss any point. And he hasn't kept touching upon the problem a one dimensional approach, which is a feat in itself, because touching such social problems is a complex matter to begin with. Again, in awe of how the whole complexity bordering on ambiguity of the situation has been broken into this discrete mini steps/packets rendering an understanding of the big picture so much simpler. The key to solving a tedious problem.

- Finally, of course, I usually have credibility issues with regards to social cause oriented shows. Like serious ones. But somehow, Aamir is just the kind of "celebrity" face who makes you want to believe. In a problem. In a cause. In a resolution. That he's used that vantage point for the promotion of such a concept is (as all the buzz about the show claims) very commendable. Even if for a second I was going to doubt the factual consequence of this show, skeptical about actual results to come of it - the one guaranteed point is materializing the concept itself. The inception of an idea to fight out something so large scale, needs to be at a larger scale - and the way this whole launch and show has come about for now, larger it is. If the recent history of Indian judiciary is anything to go by, there have been few but consequential verdicts that have been outcomes of media promotion and public rising. One of those rare few instances where being "overpopulated" becomes an indirect boon of that kind of "human resource" which can actually create a wave of opinion when in majority.

Overall, I think it's a first of a kind outreach reality concept. True to the promos, Aamir is not looking at entertaining, but awakening - and if in the process he does become bigger, I say he deserves it. Him, and the entire team, whom I hope will in time be duly, individually credited - because the making of something so methodical and complicated is the work of a team where EVERYONE understands and commits to their responsibility.

Looking forward to the next episode, and in the meanwhile, some discussion around this place!

xx
JZ

Brilliant post! You said it better than I ever could!

Agree completely about the fact that this show deserves a round of applause solely for being so unique and just so completely different to what we've seen in the past.

Aamir is the perfect choice as the host of this show. I think we all feel like we can connect with him in some way or another. Superstars in Bollywood have this image built around them that separates them from their fans but Aamir has always come across as a guy who's the voice of the public and I think that was further emphasised in the episode today.

All said and done, Aamir was bang on about what he said in the promos of the show. Dil pe lagni chahiye, dil pe lagegi na toh hi baat banega. I believe he's successfully managed to do that!

Word JZ! and nice to read your thoughts here..😊

I truly applaud Aamir for this..I always admired him for his films, for the issues that were bought out in many of his movies..to have a show of this type on TV is really admirable..

people may or may not be aware of many social issues that exist..many of such issues
have least concern and respect for human life and dignity and are an evil to our society..some exist in the most remotest parts of India where as some we see around us every other day.. and sadly in many cases educated class are part of it which is hard to believe..

though one might be aware of them, how many really make an effort to get connected to such issues consciously let alone trying to take responsibility as a citizen of the country? Bringing such issues to one's living room through a strong media might be a positive step towards a bigger change..

Brilliant post as always, Jzee...the show overwhelmed me...made me cry, made me think and ultimately it brings about an AWAKENING as you said.

I love how all of it was done in a non-preachy manner...and covered a gamut of emotions and thoughts for the issue...you are horrified by the extent to which human beings can fall, you are touched by the spirit of some ppl, you are saddened by the stats, the numbers but then there is still a beacon of hope somewhere despite everything...

Like you said, the meticulous research shows...cuz they've covered EVERY aspect of the topic without making it tedious...first the stories, then the perpetrators, then the ACTUAL logic behind HOW this started...then the CONSEQUENCES of where this is all headed...then a call for an AWAKENING...to finally a beautiful and moving song with the metaphor of a tiny bird being cajoled to come out and spread her wings and fly again.

What is most striking about what Aamir is attempting to do here is trying to target the SOCH...the THINKING of a nation...cuz that is at the base of everything...it's not like shows on social causes haven't been made before...there's been talks shows which have forums discussing all kinds of things...but this show isn't just about talking and having shouting matches about an issue in the name of "debates"...it's about ACTUALLY taking an issue and cutting to the core of it...and making the nation as a whole ACTIVELY start to think about the fact that they are not isolated and every issue grows to a point where it affects the nation as a whole.

Ultimately the SOCH is the biggest issue facing the nation...the rest is extraneous...the SOCH is the root...and that is what Aamir is trying to target and that is what makes his effort so worthy of accolades and applause.

The show can grow into something truly amazing in terms of movements and I'm quite intrigued to see how and what other topics will be brought forth.

did anyone attend to the starting monologue of Aamir in d show...i believe he summed up d purpose of d show...its just soo convenient 2 b a spectator 2 such issues as dey might not b affecting us directly...but sumwhere it does affect us at least indirectly...sumthng like female infanticide actually translates into problems like d disrespct of women in society is a relation i wud have never had made...its his ability to show us d bigger picture dat makes d difference...& i also thank him from refraining from any emotional overdose/melodrama...& he is right it happens right around us...in a metro like delhi...

change or not...but d awareness itself in such a mass scale...can make some difference...as sum1 rightly said on d show...if even 1 life can b saved...its a difference...hats off 2 d team..👏...

I LOVED the opening monologue...Aamir has this amazing ability to connect on a GENUINE level...every bit he mused about was not preachy but makes you think about your life beyond just getting through it for yourself...it makes you think of the part you play in the world as a whole...

My fav. part though has to be the bit when he's writing out 'satyamev jayate' on the sand:

"Sirf hungama khada karna mera maqsad nahin
meri koshish hai ki yeh soorat badalni chahiye

Mere seene mein nahin toh tere seene mein sahi
ho kahin bhi aag lekin aag jalni chahiye"

It just sums up what this show is about and I LOVED how it segued into the SMJ song...and panned to the 'satyamev jayate' written on the sand...what a BRILLIANT opening to the show.

JZ! 🤗 Missed you yaar, how've you been...I just watched this with my parents and I was so excited to see a post by you on this forum! lol

And Anu, et tu! Everyone's here man! 🤗

And wow you guys are like all NBT-fied in your sigboxes too. lol This is making me want to catch up ASAP.

Anyways, I totally agree with you guys. I was also very overwhelmed watching this episode. Wow, hat's off to Amir for conceiving and bringing about a project like this.

JZ, I think the word you used- TEDIOUS is SO the word. Thinking about these kinds of issues has just become tedious for all of us now. I think we've become impassive to these issues now. It has become so common and so accepted. That awareness, that emotional connect, that sensitivity, that seriousness and the reality of these issues has become blurred somewhat.

So in undertaking a project such as this one, I think a major accomplishment for Amir is just getting people CONNECTED again. Like Anu, said, just making us FEEL and THINK about these issues is a feat in itself. In bringing about dinner table discussions, online blogs/discussions/vidoes/opinions...Amir might just be able to reach out to the public and increase the awareness required to bring about some kind of a change. Because it all starts with an inspiration. A thought in the right direction...

What I liked was that broader view. The problem isn't just that this is happening...the problem is that desensitization. Becoming so detached to our society...becoming disconnected with what makes us human. I liked how Amir had that insight and perspective to make people CARE on some level. There has to be SOMETHING in that episode that each one of us can take away with us. Either a story, a stat, a voice, a visual, an emotion, an inspiration, a song, a tune, or even just a word. Whatever makes you care, because this episode had some food for thought to appeal to everyone I would like to think.

And the point wasn't even so much as educating I think. Though that's very important as well. Because I think, that what this episode portrayed wasn't exactly brand new information either. But the way it was presented, it just makes you reflect...even if it evokes no other emotion from you. This kind of a show makes you reflect on the kind of society you live in, and it makes you reflect within yourself too. It's the question of WHY should I care about this. That's what Amir reflects upon in his opening monologue too. It's that thought of wanting to reach out in way that inspires people, makes people care enough to cause a change. Or atleast a reflection of some sort.

I loved that story of that Punjabi village and the change they've brought upon. So inspiring. I just really liked the range of emotions portrayed in this episode. From extremes like human cannibalistic behaviour, emotional blackmail and manipulation, corruption, and an untrustworthy healthcare system...to inspiration, hope, activism, realistic results and actual change happening, encouragement and scope for creativity. Even the ironic humourous touch with all those 35 plus bachelors. You know, it just makes you reflect on SO many levels...

The ridiculousness of it all in some way...how have WE created such a system. A vicious cycle where feminine empowerment refuses to happen. The idea itself of not wanting a female child because of the challenges our society puts out for women. The rape cases, the objectifying, the trade, the fear of it all. But then, these practices that keep this cycle going. A girl child isn't preferred, but then this preference itself is what is feeding this cycle to continue on. Once again, I liked the bigger picture shown in this episode. This isn't just an isolated issue. It's an entire faulty system that WE have created. And so, it is US only that can bring about a change. It's about providing that broader wisdom to inspire us enough to care just a little bit.

And that song in the end was just a brilliant touch. Once again, a final attempt at getting through to everyone. And those visuals of all those girls during the song. It was super touching. What an amazing piece of music, and the lyrics. I love that singer too, Swanand Kirkire. I think he has such a soulful voice. Just the visual this song provided. Like Anu said, of this free bird. A tiny bird that may seem unimportant and insignificant, but it has SUCH a potential to touch your life in a beautiful way. A potential to prosper your home, your soil, your roots, your life. Just a subtle and a humble request to let the bird fly. A small attempt to reconnect ourselves to that humanity.

Like you said JZ, I don't have the heart to criticize this show either...just because of that idea. The fact that a superstar like Amir undertook a project like this and moved me in this way. Made me think, and made me FEEL so much. I think that's the point of a medium like television after all. 👍🏼
