Of Yash and Arpita's pictures on the wall

Thought this very crucial topic merited its own post. Why do all the psychologists on the forum think Yash has those hideous, self lit pictures of Arpita and himself all around his room. I have a few theories:

  • He is afraid he will forget her and has started to already so keeps putting up more pictures on the wall just to keep their love story still a reality in some alternate world
  • He has hung up those pictures as a way for his daughters to see their mom on a daily basis. Although since there are none of her holding the kids its not clear how the kids will appreciate but that's a different thought.
  • He hung up all those pictures as a deterrant to his family when they pressured him to get married that - no, I am still in love with her so no way.
  • He misses her - this one is too obvious and the number or the size of the pictures there doesnt merit a simple explanation.

Yash wants to keep her alive in his heart and mind so he has her all over the room.
I think the pics issue will come tomorrow. They need to be taken off because the kids will question him and Arti.
They should just keep one pic of her in the room. And that too a solo pic.

The size and profusion and the lighting I find inexplicable and frankly, quite alarming!

There are practically no scenes between Yash and Aarti in their bedroom in which Arpita does not also loom large. That is the point, right? We are to be constantly confronted with the biggest obstacle in this relationship.

I actually find the aesthetic of self-portraits in one's room quite fascinating to begin with. On Samana's recommendation a while back, I watched a hindi film called Hum Saath Saath Hain. The three brothers in that film share a bedroom (they are all grown men, so that itself is quite strange 😆, not mention the fact that they live in a mansion, so there is no dearth of space 😆). Anyway, above each of their beds is a mega-mega-portrait. As if to mark, this where X sleeps, just in case they forget! 😆

And lo-and-behold we see the same thing in Payal and Palak's bedroom. Above each bed is a huge photo, again, as though marking territory! I can't imagine having solo pics of myself around my apartment! Imagine running into yourself all the time like that! Or perhaps it soon merges into the decor and you barely notice? Which is why Yash has plastered every available surface? So that he can't BUT notice?!

The movie is a joke- except for the hint of a romance b/n Salman and preeti, it's full of cliches and caricatures.

The pictures turn me off so much. In fact its real bad rap for the actress playing Arpita-to have so many people repulsed by her pictures...

@ Aparna,
My instinctive reaction has always been that this is a vulgar (esp. the back-lit photos) display...then I try and temper that reaction with the thought that there is no "one size fits all" when it comes to grief, and that everyone grieves differently, and that everyone ought be allowed to grieve in their own way...

My concern is for the girls...how is this affecting them? And how will it affect their relationship with Aarti? If Yash does indeed want Aarti to be a mother to the girls, shouldn't he try and make an effort to lessen this idea of her being a step-mother? How can his display possibly help?

But perhaps children are wiser and will let their feelings be their guide...

Happily, in the girls' room, their is only one photo of Yash and Arpita from what I could make out. So they aren't surrounded by Arpita every moment of their waking lives

I think Yash is quite normal with his kids and doesn't burden them with mention of Arpita. That's why the pictures are jarring. With anybody else in an OTT mode that's typical filmy, the pictures would be in place. With Yash, he is so restrained, they seem like a total anomaly.

I don't know but I've seen this in some rich posh households.. these huge huge portraits of their families ... I was thinking .. perhaps its a thing they do ? But when it came to Yash/Arpita. . I had a different situation to relate to .. I've mentioned it in the DC .. shall mention it here..
I know a family whose eldest daughter died in a car crash ... now they have put up a huge portrait of her in their living room as a constant reminder that she is not gone but still very much alive in their hearts and minds for them ...
For Yash its a different case (we are yet to explore what it is) .. that he has put up such huge portraits of him and her in all these romantic poses and also solo pics of Arpita .. esp on her wedding day .. and I'm sure he has done this whole cover-the-entire-wall-space-with-her-pictures bit as a constant reminder that he did love her, does love her, and will always love her. For now I feel this is the reason .. but later on if they suggest its guilt or something else.. then that would bring about a whole new theory ..
@Mira.. LOL at the "X" marks the spot 😆

" With Yash, he is so restrained, they seem like a total anomaly."

That's what I meant when i said grief affects us in different ways. Grief can make us do strange things. Can make us behave totally out of character. There is no "normal" way to grieve. And in fact, this "anomalous" behavior perhaps makes a lot of sense after all...Yash is so restrained in his normal life...It makes sense to me that a man who exercises so much control over himself and his surroundings should lose it in such a situation...

In fact, I would rather there not be some "explanation"...like guilt...that would make it too easy

The director of PV wanted it that way... To make audience realize Yash is madly in love with Arpita and he intends to marry only for his daughters.😉
