2012 may mark the return of the comedy genre in Tamil cinema. CT tells you why…

What's the year's biggest hit so far? Nanban. What's the next biggest? Last week's Oru Kal Oru Kannadi (going by the tremendous response from the trade and the audiences). And the next? Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi (KSY). Agreed, we have quite some way to go before 2012 ends, but going by the current trend, it looks like comedy will be the flavour of the year.
The major reason that industry observers give on why films laced with humour are being accepted by audiences today is because of the ennui created by the spate of violent Madurai-set movies. Says an industry insider on condition of anonymity, "An action hero like Vijay, who was on a low after the failure of his masala films, could make his comeback thanks to Kavalan and now, Nanban, which ranks amongst his biggest successes. People are now in the mood for lighter fare and that is the reason why KSY, with its self awareness, was refreshing. Even a message film like Pandiraj's Marina worked mainly because of the comic moments, especially the humour-filled romantic track between Sivakarthikeyan and Oviya."
The biggest test, however, lies ahead. Come May and we will see Sundar C, who returns to direction after a hiatus with a full-length comedy, considered his forte. If the film succeeds, one can expect similar comedies in quick succession, similar to the trend that his Ullathai Allitha created in the 90s. Sundar says that comedy has changed now. "Rather than action comedy or slapstick, it is situation comedy that is being welcomed now. If you see the comedy that Santhanam is currently doing, it is almost like something that your boy next door does. People today want a bit of realism in comedy and casual comments that are funny, are making people laugh today." Interestingly, this comic resurrection is happening despite two of the major comedians of the last decade at their low. While Vadivelu has become persona non grata in Kollywood after his political fiasco, Vivekh is far from the funnyman he was at the beginning of the millennium. And, Ganja Karuppu, who was once touted to take the place of Vadivelu, has become a hit-and-miss affair. Santhanam has been the sole flag bearer and not surprisingly, he is the most in demand. Now, post their good shows in Marina and Nanban, Sivakarthikeyan and Sathyan have raised expectations.

Comedy is one genre dat is enjoyed by all de classes ...Need of de moment too as humour element in life is missing bigtime 😆

It is good to see comedy movies returning 😃 sirika vekkurathu romba kustamapa 😆😆😆 But some comedy movies become a tragedy to the audience example is maapillai it is out and out comedy movie because of poor screenplay and direction it become one of the most tragedy movie for the audience 🤣


Sundar C could have give lot of good films avar lost pannaru main reason vanthu avar nadika vanthathu thaan thalai nagaram hit anathukku apparam nadika vanthu nammaku gaandu thaan vanthathu only thalai nagaram hit meethi ella padamum utter flop for him he waste 6 years in acting 😡😡😡😡 Now I am happy he has comeback to direction 😃 He got masala cafe and soon he is gonna start a film with vishal in triple action.😆
