It is a little raw as I had no plans to continue but just took it up.. So I apologize if it is a let down.. I liked Part 1 better.. But part 2 is needed so.. So here goes
"Gopi.. So you are back. I knew your husband will not want you, ever. So you are back being a burden here" Ahem heard Gopi's Maami's voice leering at his wife. He had to stop himself from slamming the car door.
Don't damage the car door Ahem.. That woman is not worth it.
"Where is your bag girl? Or did he push you out without even that." "No Maami, I .." Ahem walked and placed his hands on Gopi's shoulder casually and gave a wooden smile her Maami. "She came with me for a visit. Do we need to bring a bag to have dinner Maamiji?" Ahem walked into the house hearing the woman cackle something about him being always welcome.
Her cruel tone had changed sugary sweet making it all the more cruel. His sister walked in nonchalantly like nothing was wrong with the world. She stopped seeing him with Gopi.
"Bhai, you here?" "Yes Kinjal. How is the divinity show coming up?" His remark made Kinjal look at him in surprise. He kept his face neutral.
"Damadji, are you here to leave Gopi?" Ahem raised his eyebrows to those words. "Why do you think that Maamiji? Why would I leave Gopi here?" His words seemed to take the air out of her balloon and her face became small however much she tried otherwise. His wife stood near him looking at him with a shy smile forgetting her Maam's intial words.
"Gopi, can you get some water please? And maybe something to eat?" He saw her look at her Maami who motioned her to the kitchen. He stopped her Maami before she could closet Gopi in the kitchen.
"Maamiji, Rashi and Jigar also will be here in a few minutes. Just wanted to let you know so that you are not overwhelmed at the number of people at dinner." That fake smile again. It is getting on my nerves. "Rashi dikra, Daamadji?" "Yes Maamiji, and Jigar too."
I need to get her out of my sight atleast till I have a chance to compose myself.
Ahem stood and walked around the house and made his way to his wife. He had no interest standing there listening to her Maami's worthless banter as she tried to second guess his intentions for the visit.
"Gopi?.." "Ahemji, I thought I will make you some green tea instead of just getting water." Her smile made him smile. "Thank you." Ahem got the cup from her and caressed her cheek once with the other hand.
"Gopi, can you do me a favor? Can you call Dhawalji home from the shop? I need to discuss something with him." He saw her nod and go out blushing. He knew it would take time for her to come back. Enough time to make the others understand the purpose of this visit.
~~~~~~~~~~~
"So Kinjal.. How is your writing these days." His tangential question he saw had confused her. "Bhai?" "Well, you were so good at fabricating letters, especially my letters.. and I was wondering if you still have the habit." He saw the blood drain from her face as he mentioned fabricating letters. He knew he had hit a mark. "Bhai, I do not know what you are talking about."
He knew that would be her reaction. It was as expected. "Hmm.. Let me think. I specifically believed that you had that habit. Why? Ah.. Maybe because I find that you wrote a letter pretending to be me, to my wife before our marriage." Ahem thundered as he opened the letter he had in his pocket and dangled it in front of Kinjal. "And the funny part is that I remember that I specifically told you to stay out of my personal life at that time."
He saw Kinjal's protest die on her lips. He gave her a glare and continued. "As much as I want to do it now, the next time I see you step out of line Kinjal, I will make it public, espcially to Mom." He saw Kinjal shrink and knew he hit the mark. "And remember one more thing, Gopi is my wife and your Bhabhi. I expect you to give her the respect due to her when you see her. No more raising your voice at her. You will have to answer me if you do that. Better keep that in mind."
Ahem watched as Kinjal stood nodding her head and then bent her head down. He was not yet finished with the other woman but before he could even start he heard the voice he had come to hate the most.
"Aree..Kinjal, what is this? You faked and wrote a letter in your brother's name. Shame on you. Rashi Dikra did you hear..." Ahem turned to see Jigar and Rashi stride in.
His brother with a look of confusion on his face. Gopi's Maami's unwanted outburst confirmed to him that she knew more about the letter than she was letting out.
"I am coming to that Maamiji." His tone made Rashi and Urmila look up. "Actually I remember Gopi telling me that this letter said I loved her. Hmm.. How come she got that impression when it tells her the exact opposite?"
He could see Urmila and Rashi's mind overworking to find an excuse. "Nahi Jiju.. Gopi read the letter and decided that it was not from you.." Ahem gave her a smile that said she could go to hell and he was not a fool.
"Really Rashi? So you knew about the letter. Alright. But then, you as well as everyone here knows that Gopi learnt to read only 10 months ago. So she did not read them before marriage. Somebody told her what it had in it. was it you who told her that the letter said I love her?"
Ahem could see his brother process this new information. He had a frown on his face. Finally
"No No Jiju.. I did not even know about that letter. How would I know about Anithaji? Maybe..." Her sugary sweet voice just as irritating as her mother's and Ahem lost his patience. "Alright Rashi. Now you tell me, who could have read this letter wrongly to Gopi if not someone from this house? It has to be either you or Maamiji right here. You decide, who is it?"
"Jiju... I did not.. I mean Mummy.." "Alright Rashi, while you are trying to think of a good excuse to wriggle out of this, let us talk of a few other things."
Ahem could see Jigar was frowning harder but he decided to continue. Afterall Jigar had the right to know how his wife really was.
"Maamiji.." His voice brought back the women from whatever world they were trying to hide themselves in. "I talked to Nilesh today." That made the necessary impact. He could see Urmila's mouth open and close waiting for him to drop the bomb.
"He told me that on the day of his marriage with Anitha, his dad got a couple of calls from a number telling them that Anitha had a past with me. Now, that is really surprising right? On the day of her marriage?"
He saw Urmila swallow and try to look all concerned and confused. Rashi was fidgeting, looking at her mom. Kinjal looked genuinely shocked. Ahem felt that it was the only saving grace in the current circmstances. He had been sure that Kinjal would also be part of this and was disgusted that his sister could go so low that she ruined a girl's life but it did not seem to be the case.
"Bhai?" Ahem put his hand out stopping Jigar from asking any further. "One minute Jigar. Did you know that the phone call when traced back had a number I have seen on Gopi's cell some times? It may be on the most dialled numbers in Rashi's cellphone" That got them.
Now there is no way to escape Mrs. Shah. You don't think do you? You played with the wrong person this time. Ahem Parag Modi hates liars and cheaters.
Ahem paused for effect and turned to look at the women who stood in front of him. He had nothing but utter contempt for their actions. And Anger. Anger that his Gopi had to go through hell for them to get their enjoyment.
"On enquiry we found that the number belongs to one Mrs. Urmila shah resident of Rajpal Nagar." His statement was followed by shock from his brother and Kinjal and the look of fear and panic from the other two in the room. Bingo..
"Arre.. Arre Daamadji, what are you saying? How could.." "What is the hurry Maamiji? Let me finish.." Ahem's ice cold voice made her stop her ranting. Ahem knew that the ones standing in the room knew he was just an inch from going over the edge.
"And the other wonder is Anitha somehow got the impression that I was not happy with my marriage with Gopi. Now she told me that it was you Rashi, who told her that piece of information. Now why would you do that?" Ahem sarcastically asked.
"Woh Jiju, I did not.. Anitha is lying. She is trying to .." "Create trouble. I thought so. But now why should she? She was getting married afterall and her marriage broke making her a spectacle in front of the society. She knows I will never betray Gopi and my marriage. Doesn't make sense about her lying, does it now?" Ahem's question found its mark. He could find the alarm ring in Rashi's mind and her eyes showed her panic. Boxed and Nailed.
Ahem's anger rose as he found every one of his doubts come true. The next was the most cruel part and he could contain himself no longer.
"But then again, why did I find you telling Gopi two days ago that I was better off with Anitha, Rashi? Why? Now answer me?" Ahem's shout made Rashi shiver back and he saw her take a couple of steps back. Ahem balled his fists to restrain himself. He had heard Rashi talk to Gopi but at that time his pre occupation with Anitha's marriage getting arranged had made him push the idea to the back of his mind. It was Gopi's sorrow that reminded of him of how cruel it would been on her..
"No Jiju.. You misunderstood.. I was just telling Gopi.. She is my sister.. How would I..." "Shut up Rashi." Ahem took one step forward but stopped. He never had a handle of his anger and he did not want to do something he would regret.
"Gopi is and will always be Gopi Ahem Modi, whether you want it or not. Whether you like it or not. Rashi, make those excuses of yours to someone else." Ahem declared. "And don't degrade the word sister. You did all this to a girl who worked hard to get you back with your husband. You are in my opinion the lowest of the lowest scum on earth.. So never again mention that you are my Gopi's sister. She is well without sister like you."
Ahem felt his anger boil over as he looked at the three standing before him. He could see them looking for excuses and ways to wriggle out and no remorse. His Gopi had to suffer because of them.
"False letters, creating misunderstanding, breaking relationships.. We all know who is an expert in all this. So keep all your excuses to yourself. I don't care.. I give a damn..About you, you and you" Ahem pointed at Urmila, Rashi and Kinjal as they stood paralyzed by his growing anger.
His voice rose steadily as he spelt every word out, his anger bursting at the seams. Ahem was afraid he would do them all physical harm. His mother's values and the thought of Gopi kept him from lashing out further. He needed to concentrate on why he had come here in the first place. Ahem glared at each one of them one after the other and then continued.
"Let me tell you all this.. Listen and listen carefully. The next time I even get a a small inkling, even a very small inkling that one of you have caused my family or my wife any trouble.." Ahem snapped his fingers at pointed at the three, his voice clear and precise..
"...I will personally make sure that you pay and pay heavily, you will. I will take you apart so quickly that you will not know what hit you. Mrs. Urmila shah and you Rashi and you, KEEP OFF GOPI.. If I see you or your mother near Gopi again, I will personally make sure that you are both restrained legally for harassment. Don't even doubt my words. I will make sure that you never see the outside world after going to jail for your crimes. "
He saw them physically shrink at his words. "I hope you heed my warning.. I mean them and God forbid if I see you hurting Gopi again. I will spare not even a thought before you face the consequences." Ahem stood his ground giving them a final burning glare.
He turned around once and found Jigar standing there with a stricken look on his face. He felt sorry for his brother but then it was needed for Jigar to grow up.
"I am sorry Jigar." Ahem's voice came down a bit though he sounded angry. "But I cannot let them hurt Gopi anymore. I do not know the entire story of her life but if these last few days are any indication, I think this is just a scratch. The entire story may be something I will never know but I cannot let them hurt Gopi anymore." Ahem placed his hands on Jigar's shoulders once and turned around.
I need to get out of here.. Before I break something or someone..
Then he then saw Gopi coming back. "Ahemji, Dhawal Bhai is yet not back from the wholesale store.." Gopi stopped short. "Rashi ben, Devarji?" Gopi looked smiling from one to the other and then frowned as she sensed the tense environment.
Just in time Gopi. You saved me again from myself. Thank you again.
Ahem immediately walked over to her and took her hands in his. "Gopi, we need to go back. I will talk to Dhawalji later. Jigar and Rashi are here to meet her mother. We were just discussing something. But I think we both should take our leave now. Mom will be waiting." Ahem smiled hoping that it reassured his wife.
She seemed to take his words at face value and nodded her head happily. He linked his hand to hers and turned around. "Maamiji" The leer in his voice did not go unnoticed by anyone else except Gopi. "I am taking my wife, Gopi Ahem Modi back home with me. You enjoy your dinner. And please remember what I told you. Jai shree Krishna."
He saw Gopi wish them goodbye, give a queer look at Jigar and turned to follow him out. Ahem stopped and decided to drill home that he meant business just once more. "Now Gopi.. I do not want you to be back here anytime.." He saw her look of concern and immediately changed his words.. "I mean, I do not want you to come here like before. You belong with me back at our home. You are Gopi Ahem Modi,my wife and that always comes first. Understood? His mock stern voice got him the smile he was looking for. He continued to hold her wrist and turned around to leave when ...
"Bhai, I am coming with you too." Jigar's voice stopped Ahem. "Jigarji, I will also come..." "No Rashi!" Jigar's words sounded omnious in that room. "You can stay her with your mom until you both get over everything. You do not have to worry about your bag, I will send it in with the driver tomorrow."
Ahem looked at Jigar's hardened tone and nodded his head understanding. "But Jigarji.. I.."
"What happened Devarji?" Gopi.. They were forgetting Gopi.
Before Ahem said anything he heard Jigar talk to Gopi. "Nothing Bhabhi. Mummyji is sick and I wanted Rashi to be with her and get the sickness done with. No issues. Rashi will take care. We need to leave now" Jigar left without a backward glance and Ahem followed suit.
He knew Gopi would be concerned for her Maami's health but it was suffocating him to stay in their presence.
As he strode out, he glanced one final time at the three woman who had wrecked his Gopi's life till now. They would pay dearly if they tried that ever again.
He almost pulled Gopi with him to their car and relaxed only when they were halfway back home.
"Ahemji, Maami.." "Don't worry. Rashi will manage. It is her mom after all and she belongs with her mother.. You Gopi, belong with me" Ahem cruised along the way home taking her hand in his. He was going back home with his wife.
