Chapter 10: Dalliance
The door was ajar; thus she was surprised when he knocked.
"Come in." she said just as she pulled off her glasses. Without thought, she pulled the pen out of her hastily looped up bun. She only realized what she had done once the pen was in her hand and her hair tumbled down freely just as he walked in. She put the pen down on the table and hoped that he didn't notice what she had done. Or if he did, then she hoped that he wouldn't call attention to it. He already knew that she wore the hairpin that he gave her at home. She didn't want to give him any more ammunition against her.
Even though it was now completely healed, her ankle-cast was still on; her doctor had insisted that she wear it one more day. She remained seated and looked up as he approached.
"Did you have lunch?"
She shook her head.
"I am going to get a sandwich. What do you want?"
She was surprised, but she tried not to show it as she shook her head.
"Did you bring lunch?"
She thought of lying for a moment, but then decided against it.
"I am not hungry."
"It's 3 o' clock in the afternoon, Khushi. You've been here since 10. So, don't give me that BS. I will get you something anyways, so you might as well tell me your preference."
"I am really not hungry. And you've never bothered about whether I ate or not before, so why start now?"
His expression darkened and he stalked out without saying anything else. She figured that maybe she had been a bit rude to him, but she couldn't help it. She didn't understand why he acted the way that he did sometimes. The fact that they were both in the office on Sundays was determined to draw rumors if word of it got out. Fortunately, no one had found out; she told no one and it didn't seem that he had either. That, combined with the fact that he had shown up that day at her flat and... other things.. all just made him confusing in the extreme.
Lavanya's question had been haunting her for a few weeks. Either way this played out, Khushi figured that she would be the one who caught the short end of the stick.
She was not into office dalliances, but then again, the devil hardly seemed a man who would be interested in one himself, so that was neither here nor there.
Even if it was not a dalliance, dating your boss smacked of some unrealistic chick flick or redundant Hindi serial, or... in ASR's mind, some kinky po*n... and she didn't want her love-life to fall into any of their categories.
Not to mention, work relationships complicated everything once the initial honeymoon phase was over. ASR was a difficult man to deal with without complicating things like that...
Besides, she had to know her own limitations. She was not a woman equipped for casual dating. And if God forbid she fell in love with him, eight months later she was bound to get her heart handed to her on a platter, split into smithereens that she would have to piece together with industrial grade super-glue. And then she would have to wonder what consolation flowers she would have to buy for herself on his behalf.
No Sir. She had neither the time nor the energy for any of the above options.
Despite his temperamental nature, ASR was brilliant in business, having an intuitive sense for how times changed and how to foresee what the new wave coming in was. He was intimidating to work for, but only until you proved yourself to him; afterwards, there was a sense of worth that grew in you from working for someone who always expected the best from you. And once you worked liked that for a few years, you knew without a doubt that you were good at what you did. Good enough to make you think that you were in solid standing to get well-placed in other companies.
But therein ended their relationship... they were merely boss and employee... It has always been that way to this day... and she wanted it to be the same going forward... Whatever had changed in the past few weeks should just revert back to how it was before. That was in both their best interest.
The door opened suddenly, jerking her back from her musings, and she looked up startled.
He walked in carrying a brown paper bag and promptly dropped it in front of her on the desk. "It's vegetarian."
"What? I told you..." he didn't let her finish as he turned around and walked back towards the door.
"Sir." She stood up and called.
She thought he wouldn't stop, but he did, just by the door.
She wanted to say something... something of what she had been thinking... instead, when she looked down at the brown paper bag and back up at him, all that came out was, "Thank you."
He nodded but said nothing else before walking out and closing the door behind him.
She sat back down and looked at the brown paper bag again as she put her glasses back on, pulled her hair into a bun and looped her pen through it, and sat back in her chair and sighed.
This may be a tad bit more complicated than she thought...
