Swapnil Joshi is a complete novice when it comes to culinary skills. When a TV anchor coaxed him into playing a tele game on screen and then instructed Swapnil to hunt up five ingredients for sheera, it threw the actor into a real tizzy. Aided by shouted directions from his dentist-wife Juhi and other family members, Swapnil, with a lot of opening of cupboards and cannisters, was able to fetch up the rawa, sugar, ghee and cashewnuts but for the life of him he couldn't trace the dabba of kesar in the fridge and with time running out, just plucked up a jug of water and brought it to the table drawing appreciative laughter for his "brainwave".
Doodh ka doodh, paani ka paani, right Swapnil? His efforts fetched his wife a Rs 2000 in cash and taught Swapnil at least what goes into making sheera. Mother dear?
She is the loving mother who showers her oh-so-cute baby with baby powder in a Johnson commercial. So, imagine our shock when we saw the same actress kidnapping a just born baby from the incubator, no less, in the serial Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Playing the role of Meera, Shubhaavi K is quite sinister as the vamp, out to destroy Tulsi's life ...
Cool introduction to Nayee Dopahar
It was a cool way to introduce its hot line-up for two new shows. We are talking about Sony which launched its Nayee Dopahar, a new programming block to be aired between 1-3 pm. The first hour has original programming with the dailies, Kabhi To Nazar Milao and Rishton Ki Dor followed by repeats of their primetime shows. On a sultry summer noon, the channel organised a carnival replete with games, food stalls, the bangle store and a tatoo maker to herald the new block that will "stop people from giving afternoon parties".
Aroona Irani back with Vaidehi, a one-hour weekly on Sony
Sony seems to be in an overdrive launching new shows at primetime, afternoon and late night. The channel is readying to launch Aroona Irani's Vaidehi and Dheeraj Kumar's Man Mein Hai Vishwas from June.
Vaidehi which will see Pallavi Kulkarni on the screen after a considerable gap, Kehta Hai Dil was her last serial, deals with a social issue. According to sources, it is about the incompatible relationship between a husband and wife. To be aired from June 6, Vaidehi with a tagline Aur ek agnipariksha, is a one hour weekly and has in its cast Sachin Sharma, Nikhil Arya, Kiran Kumar and Aroona Irani. Will Vaidehi prove to be the Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand of Sony in terms of TRPs? That's the agnipariksha ... Virasat: Games people play
A sensuous Sangeeta Ghosh is gliding ahead with the good-looking Rohit Roy hot on her heels. A embrace later, the duo is shocked to see something that puts a brake on their passion. A huge chess board appears with two pawns in the centre. Coming soon, says the promo on STAR Plus. They are talking about Virasat, a new serial to be aired on the channel at 9 pm from June.
Produced and directed by Ravi Chopra, the serial is a high-powered drama boasting of a stellar cast including Kiran Kumar, Deepak Quazir, Amarr Upadhyay and Aman Varma. "Unlike the usual serials where we introduce new faces and establish the characters, here we have taken well-known actors. It is like a multi-starrer on the small screen," informs Shailaja Kejriwal, creative director, STAR Plus. Virasat revolves around two families, the Kharbandas and the Lambas who, for some reason, are at cross purposes. The Kharbanda family is headed by Kailash (Deepak). He has two children Kunal (Amarr) and Priyanka (Sangeeta). Raman Lamba (Kiran) is another patriarch with two sons Rishabh (Aman) and Rahul (Rohit). Predictably, Rahul and Priyanka fall in love with each other. But if you think it is the ghisa pita story of parental opposition to their union, that's not it at all. It is about what happens if they do? Nafrat ke khel mein do dilon ki chahat is the tagline, you see. "We are pitching it as a game between two families with all the characters as pawns caught in it," says Kejriwal. The daily soap will replace Miilee. Priyanka Chopra on laughter show
Avid followers of the laughter show Great Indian Laughter Challenge Dwitiya have one more Friday to save their favourite contestant. The episode, which airs on Friday, May 19 2006 at 10.00 p.m. will feature yet another side-splitting performances by the five challengers - Albela Khatri, Rasik Maharaj, Sunil Sawara, Yogendra Joshi from India and Faisal Masood from Pakistan. Also for the first time, the actress who has acted in the compic caper Mujshe Shaadi Karoge, the sexy Priyanka Chopra will be joining the jury.
Sandeep Acharya to perform live, launch album
"Life has changed drastically," says Indian Idol Sandeep Acharya as he readies to launch his debut album Mere Saath Sara Jahan on May 20 with a live concert. He will be joined by his nearest competitor Karunya and theother 11 finalists. His album composed by Sandeep Chowta has eight numbers penned by Sameer. Recently, he shot for the music video of his folksy title number directed by Ruchi Narain. The video traces Sandeep's journey from his humble beginnings as a singer in the village to the city and stardom. "It captures me living with my family and how initially they are reluctant to give me the go-ahead for a career in singing. It brings out the mischievous side in me. There's a lot of uchal-khud humour and emotions. It will touch you," he promises. The video will start airing on all the popular channels in a few days. As for the album, it comprises two versions of the title track, two Rajasthani numbers, a romantic song, two popular hits Papa kehte hai ...' and 'Chehra hai ya chand khila hai ...', one sufi number 'Ishq ho gaya ...'. We caught Sandeep the day after he finished recording his album. A visibly relaxed and refreshed Sandeep said that since he won the title he has been working round-the-clock. "I had to shoot for the video, rehearse and record my songs. I would get up at 5 am and rest only at 1 pm," he recalls. He is looking forward to performing live, the first time after he won the title. The concert will be aired on May 27 on Sony.
Rajeev-Shveta in Left Right Left
That's the name of a new show to be launched on SAB towards the end of June. Left Right Left directed by Tony and Deeya Singh revolves around six youngsters living in a military academy. It traces their trials and tribulations as they search for their true calling in life. "It's about new-age patriotism (Rang De Basanti anyone), about loving and living life," says Deeya Singh. Rajeev Khandelwal and Shveta Salve have been cast in key roles followed by Suchita Paose and Priyanka Bhasin. The rest of them are all newcomers. Right now, Deeya and Tony are in the process of putting up the academy set.
Baa Bahoo ... 'promoted'
J D Majethia is on cloud nine and why not. His serial Baa Bahoo Aur Baby has been "promoted" to 9.30 pm from 10.00 pm. "Now more people can watch it," he grins. He reasons that when schools are on, the 10 pm slot specially on Sundays becomes a tad tiresome for viewers. According to him, it was the serial's phenomenal success on the weekend slot that prompted this shift. Baa ... which averages between 6 and 7 TRPs "is very good for a weekend programme competing against films" says Majethia.
Incidentally, it was the launch of STAR Plus' new half-an-hour historical Prithviraj Chauhan at 9 pm that prompted the rescheduling of the serials on the weekend. With the new slot, Majethia is planning to introduce more characters and tracks. Meanwhile, the producer alongwith writer-director Aatish Kapadia is busy shooting for a new social thriller based on a novel Reshamdunk co-written by Aatish. Though the basic story is sourced from the novel, Aatish is diverting and developing different tracks. Sumeet Raghavan, Apara Mehta, Raahil Azim, Mauli Ganguly and Kiran Karmarkar form the cast of the new serial to be aired on the STAR Network. "Whether it will be on STAR One or STAR Plus is yet to be decided," informs Majethia. The search for Gyarah Hindustani
ESPN STAR Sports, official broadcaster of FIFA World Cup(tm), along with Coca-Cola, the longest-standing corporate partner of FIFA World Cup(tm) since 1950 - has announced a unique contest Gyarah Hindustani to search 11 lucky Indians who will get a chance to see the soccer world cup Live in Germany. This is one of the initiatives of the sports network to promote the game of football and ensure the presence of 11 Indians who would represent Indian fans at the FIFA World Cup(tm) in Germany. Sricharan Iyengar, Vice President, Marketing and Sales, ESPN Software India Pvt Ltd, said, "We are very confident that many viewer ship records will be rewritten during the forthcoming FIFA World Cup(tm). Gyarah Hindustani contest will offer a unique opportunity to millions of Indians to realise the dreams of watching the world cup Live. Our association with leading Cola brand - Coca-Cola will help in reaching out to millions of viewers across India."

The ticket to the world cup would require the participants to answer correctly any one question out of eight, the clues for which shall be provided in the form of multiple choice questions on the reverse of the labels of a 500 ml +100ml FREE bottle of Coca-Cola (also available on other Brands in select cities across the country). The on air promos on radio and television are detailing the initiative. To build on the pre event hype for the event, the channel will showcase the most fascinating stories in the World Cup history in a series of six half-an-hour programmes.
