Is social media destroying human relationships?

Social media has changed the face of this era. Anyone with internet access is aware of blogs, message boards, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. These websites have given rise to freedom of speech and instant communication in cyberspace. However, is social media destroying human bonding? People spend hours typing their thoughts away to a computer screen. Texting and tweeting have become the equivalent of breathing. Families are falling apart because kids would rather update their online status than spend time with their parents. The notion of playing outside with your friends is almost extinct because now you have enough gadgets to keep you occupied inside the house on Sunday afternoons. This new-found social networking phenomenon seems to be computerizing humans and turning them into robots.

Do you agree or disagree?

Agreed, it sounds like a viable option. However, once you join a social networking website it becomes almost impossible to restrict yourself to quality over quantity. You befriend ten people, end up adding their friends to your list, friends of their friends start interacting with you, and so on. Before you know it, you are entangled in a web of 2000 contacts whose messages and tweets take all day to reply to. This might not be applicable to everyone but the majority of social media users find themselves getting addicted to it.

Hell no! My grandmother doesn't know a thing about any...makes me wonder why she even has internet access 😳

The rest, I agree with. It's become so much easier to connect with people online rather that meeting up or talking on the phone. After a long day of work or school, you'd much rather just sit in the comfort of your home.

It's not just inside the house. It's outside the house too. People rather spend their time playing Temple Run on their phone instead of having a normal discussion with someone. I heard a parent complaining last week that while driving their kid to school the kid chose to put his earphones on and listen to his music, hence ignoring any sort of conversation with his parents! The parent decided to have a go at their kid by saying "20 years ago we weren't spoilt with all these mobile phones and other gadgets" to which the cheeky kid responded "That's because they weren't invented back then mum!"😆

Certain rules must be set by the parents too though. It surprises me when I see 12 year olds demand a Blackberry or an iPhone! I remember being ecstatic with my brick phone! lol but changing times and all that right?

People now have Twitter, FB, Tumblr etc available to them at all times of the day through their phones, iTouch, iPads, tablets etc so it's definitely becoming a huge problem. I think it's fine when someone knows their limits but it is a huge distraction!

On a side note..I think texting will soon become extinct. The rise in usage of instant messaging such as BBM, WhatsApp, Vyber, Skype etc will definitely lead to a decrease in the number people who text. The main advantage of it is that it doesn't require a 3G or Wi-Fi signal compared to the other apps.

Edit: If things have changed SO much over the last 10 years, I wonder what things will be like 10 years from now!

Hey it is fun to be doing so many things, but of course when with Family gotta keep the Monster Iphone away, or else one will get an earful.
It is a useful device when standing in a queue and waiting.
