I see several topics aimed toward scrutinizing Arjun's behavior and in the end, inferring that Arjun's behaving immaturely especially given the fact that he is educated and is from Canada. First of all people, an occidental nationality does not ensure a brain. I'm from Canada, and I see lots of imbecilic individuals here. So, point refuted on the grounds of absurdness.
Specifically in regards with Arjun's behaviour, I think that he so ardently admires Purvi that he has dumbed down a bit, can no longer discern what is wrong or right. Also, don't forget the fact that he is consciously unaware of his own strongly developing feelings for Purvi. So, first of all the confusion has led up to such behaviour.
Secondly, we're just witnessing the insecure, apprehensive side of Arjun, which mind you, is quite natural for someone who lost his mother at a young age. Furthermore, he's the only child; he had no support from his siblings to cope with his life -long adversities, just a father that is very business oriented. In the end, I think the impact of such adversities in his life leads him to dumb down/panic/behave irrationally in pressure situations.
Third, Purvi is unconsciously fulfilling the role of his mother in his life, teaching him about morals, humanity, sacrificing/ compromising. So, she has sort of become an inspiration for him. He admires her so much that he cannot stand to see her unhappy, but unfortunately he thinks that her happiness lies in that schmuck, Vinay. So, he's doing everything possible to ensure her "happiness".
I think once he professes his love for Purvi and once he realizes that them two are meant to be, then he'll start acting rational again.
Anyhow, that's my rationale behind his behaviour, but I do not condone his actions at all. What he's doing is WRONG, but it can be justified from his point of view.
He's still a nice guy in the end, because his intentions are pure (and no I don't believe he's doing this to get over guilt). He cares for Purvi, just doesn't know how to execute that "care" in a manner that is right.
