Karan Johar couldn't but make a film on relationships — his story of two married couples, Kabhie Alvida Naa Kehna, releases on August 11. The director says he loves watching people and has a host of friends that double up as his family. In Play this week, Karan has listed what his relationships mean to him — including the professional ones like Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukherji that became more personal over the years. Manish Malhotra
Manish has changed the fashion of Indian cinema. We were used to garish clothes, but he brought in real, wearable clothes. I can't imagine working with anyone but him. He killed Bollywood's kitsch and brought in high fashion. He gives me his inputs in the screenplay and script — he's my all-in-one technician.

Sharmista Roy
Sharmista's contributed tremendously to the look of my films. She's objective, frank, honest and super talented. Today her work has evolved to such an extent that she's indispensable to me.

Sunita Menon
I met Sunita eight years ago. I walked into her house very low and depressed one day. Now I don't read her cards anymore or consult her as psychic, but she's a support. We've had happy times together, but I've shared a lot of things that I probably wouldn't tell anyone.
