It's not tht I hav anything against fusion music. It's jst tht the new rage of fusion music tht has come to the market that i am really against. i had a long chat wth a person and according to the person it is this new avatar of fusion music tht is the current rage of India and also that this is the actual Indian music now. Yes, we should nw learn to adapt to this fact. i agree it's the current rage but is it the actual Indian Music?? Sorry to say but i believe this current music is actually killing gud music.
The person concerned was tlking abt the remixes that floods the market and music channels on TV today. This new avatar of fusion music is somethng i feel the world can do without. Atleast India can...
This is my understanding of the process to make these musics.
1) Take a complete no/less-talented who knows somethng (at times i hav doubt on this too) about music
2) Allow him to destroy timeless movie songs/tunes composed by people like Madan Mohan and SDBurman
3) Take another singer and hear him/her (in complete futility) and try to match the likes of Mohd. Rafi and Kishore Kumar
4) Use techno computer loops for the beat.
5) Use computer samples for sarangi/sitar/sarode to play completley uninspired solos.
6) For some unknowing reasons to me, use random phrases like "I like to eat kit-kat" in a husky voice in the track and pass it off as "trance"
7) Sell this crap to unsuspecting listeners and pass it off as Indian music.
This, by far is wht the pop-culture definition of "fusion music" is. And this is wht the audience (many) today expects to see... "remixes" or "lounge music". And this is what the person tld me is the actual Indian music tht needs to be appreciated at par wth our age old classical music. There are examples of decent lunge/fusion music out there like Piya Bhavari and the second part of the same by Pt. Ajay Pohankar (which aren't really movie songs remixed...more like bandhishes like 'Kin Bairan [darbari]' remixed) but this is more of an exception than a rule.
Is this the state to which our music has come down to? No one is advising yu not to listen to new compositions of fusions… but these!! If these music can make a listener believe tht those r the actual Indian Music and at par wth our traditional classicals then it is really very unfortunate.
I mself hav a threshold level of considering wht is music & wht is noise. For me anything tht soothes my current state of nerve level i consider as music. Bt anything tht excites the current state of my nerve, according to my personal feeling, i consider it as noise. And these new avatar of fusion music jst excites my nerves too much.
A small question is coming to me all the time after that conversation. Is it the starting of end of road for our traditional music?? If true then I must say it'll b the most unfortunate thng.
