Just like Jazz, the popular perception of Indian classical music was that it was 'too cerebral' or 'too heavy'. However, recent years have seen a resurging interest in the field. An increase in the number of artists indulging in fusion and a growing number of organizations dedicated to spreading the richness of the tradition has helped revive interest in classical music. Also, younger, media savvy artists have realized the potential of the 'Channel [V]-MTV' platform and are working more towards "getting them young".

Sorry but i am nt tlking abt this fusion. east west classical fusion is okay. wht i meant was the new avatar of fusion tht is going on in the market jst now. It is among these very younger artists who r making those crap albums. and making many believe tht this very music is the best music.

Exactly. When you say youth we all fall under that. It is a particular group who are doing this.

Jadoo I agree with you 100%. Maximum number of these remixes are simply hard to understand. You don't even get to know which song has been remixed actually. And that makes you feel like hiting your head on the wall.

Barnali Didi,
Thanks for the great topic. Here are my thoughts.

I never thought people would pay for this kind of crap it so irritating and especially when they play the remix those songs sucks to the core. These days for a song to click, the lyrics must be meaningless, the voice pathetic, the raag totally distorted that's their formula and we can't really blame them. There is a part of the youth audience who has no knowledge at all of music, no good tune, no good voice and not so good lyrics and you can tell about there taste.

Remixes are Popular reason's are Remixes have flourished and become an accepted art form among second generation of South east Asians there are few good reason for it.

1.Remixes don't require any rights…
2.Well we all do not believe in right anyway - the right to copy.
3.Anyone with a computer can produce, publish, market their work on the web, burn a few cds, or buy a CD duplicator and get started.
4.Most of the remix listeners are all those FBCD (Foreign Born confused Desi) kids do not speak Hindi or listen to Indian classical music. Hindi or Bhangra remix with hip hop is often the only time that a second generation Desi kids will listen. This unrestrained: use of hip hop and house samples allows these albums to be played at all South Asian parties. Since there is no other infrastructure on there base of music.
5.You can hardly say that it is an accepted music in our society. It is so easy to create remixes music which has flourish in last fifteen years and become a new culture in Indian society. Whether it was created as a fluke of the imagination or a serious intent to create a sound, remixing is the official starting point for today's Djs

Yes Di, exactly my sentiments...and very well put..👏👏👏

Barnali,

Thanks for raising a wonderful topic of discussion.

I have had the privilege of attending a few Fusion concerts of Violin Maestro Dr. L. Subramanian, and believe me, I did enjoy it very much.

But what i detest the most is the new age remix, the mindless lyrics, the vulgur depictions of these songs and the manner in which music and lyrics are camoflaged by a piece of good editing and packaging.

Few years back, there was an album... a so called Hindi Pop album which had hit the market.... by three girls.... I think it was called Models or something... At least two of the songs was the then craze of MTV, one of them called "Mehendi ki raat".....

I had an occassion to meet two of the artistes in a private party once and on the reqeust of the host, the duo broke out into this song as well. I had heard it enough number of times to have a fairly good idea of the rhythm and flow of the song. I was appalled to find that they were completely out of tune, out of sur and overall, I could think of just two descriptions for them - besura and no awaaz.

I was puzzled because in teh album, they were not so bad. When discusing with someone who worked for the music company, I learnt that the three girls did not sound too good either, but the whole song and album was so packaged, their original voices were tweaked around on a computer to produce a reasonably good sounding voice and the music had been modified ..............

Now, If I am not a singer, I have no business to be singing professionally or making the masses spend money to buy a product which is not a gift of God, but a gift of mankind i.e. Computer.
