It was invented in 1946 by two Frenchmen, Jacques Heim and Louis Reard in Paris, named after Bikini Atoll, the site of nuclear weapon tests in the Marshall Islands. The bikini represents a social leap involving body consciousness, moral concerns, and sexual attitudes. The obvious sex appeal of the apparel prompted many Bollywood filmmakers and actors to depict it in their films.

Nutan donned it in DILLI KA THUG and who can forget the gorgeous Dimple Kapadia in BOBBY, Zeenat Aman in HEERA PANNA or Parveen Babi in YEH NAZDEEKIYA. The very mention of the word Bikini is enough to raise eyebrows and generate unwarranted brouhaha till date.
