Children born in August, the youngest in each school year, are less likely to go on to study at top universities than their older classmates, a thinktank study has found.
Researchers at the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) examined whether there was a link between the month in which a child is born and what they tend to do when they leave school.
They studied three data sets, which represent the records of 48,500 children and teenagers in England. They found children born in August were 20% less likely than their classmates born 11 months earlier. in September, to go to Russell Group universities ' the top flight that includes Oxford and Cambridge. They were more likely to study vocational courses instead.
Claire Crawford, one of the authors of the study, said August-born children may "end up doing worse than September-born children throughout their working lives, simply because of the month in which they were born".
"Studying for academic qualifications, attending a Russell Group university, and believing that you have control over your own life are all associated with a greater chance of being in work and having higher wages later in life," she said.
A previous study by the IFS, published in 2007, showed August-born children were significantly less likely to be academically successful than their September-born classmates. The latest study ' Does When You Are Born Matter? ' found parents tried to compensate for any potential disadvantage by reading to August-born children more. But they began to help them catch up only after the children started school.
The researchers found teachers were two and a half times more likely to regard August pupils at seven as below-average in maths. While 63% of teachers deemed September pupils "very ready" to start secondary school when they were nearing the end of their last year at primary school, only 49% did for August children. The researchers said this might imply that there needs to be extra help for August children to make an easy transition between school stages.
August children were less likely to be confident in their academic abilities than their September peers and twice as likely at seven to report that they have been bullied.
The study found the differences were at their most stark at primary school. Children in England start primary school in the September following their fourth birthday. The researchers said it could be that September-born children are significantly older than their August-born classmates when they sit national tests. This is interesting...but still it doesn't proof the fact that summer born's are less likely to University...
Ellen Greaves, another of the authors, said the government "should be concerned about the wider educational experience of summer-born children, who appear to be at a disadvantage in terms of their wellbeing as well as their test scores".

LOL. I did read around this other day.

What exactly is the objective of your assignment? Are you trying to prove the theory wrong that Summer born are less likely to successful academic achievers?... Bingo! I am too bored, studying ( i studied 10mins 😆) Can i have a virtual Hi-5! Here i am trying to focus on a paper, But my poor concentration level seems to be getting the better of me, i am roaming from one forum to another :| Not very practical when you have a dead line to meet. Darn these distractions! 😆 But your research is interesting... But i don't know if this will help you, but some points you can prolly raise in your assignment and i realised i used tooo many 'BUTS in this paragraph lmao
... Ps, do research the material from yourself, im only speaking from what ive studied in my Speciality e Mental Health. 😆... I am a Mental Health Student 😆 Interesting! That's a very appealing subject to study around. I happen to be a teaching student. Wish to pursue a career in teaching. lol.
Reasons for against Season affecting intelligence.
Right, The question - What influences a child's intelligence? More then which months they are born in, i think its the state and the stress the mother bears on herself during pregnancy? How the child birth was like is far more important in determining if the child is going to have any development delay? Ie such as was the birth easy? or did they require an emergency caesarean? What was the apgar score during pregnancy? These factors are important to consider when a child is showing development delay later, and the health care professionals require such information - DOB is recorded - however, on the form, you never have is it a winter or summer baby, and which month they are born in, the DOB is only recorded and you dont get plus point for being born in winter or minus points for being born in summer 😆. What forms part of the assessment most importantly is the gestation week - Was the baby born before the 38 weeks of preganancy?
_ If the baby is after their due date, then thats fine --- If the baby is born 2 weeks premature, then usually there is not much of a complication issue raised in development delay - However research shows that if the baby is born more then 2 weeks premature, then there is concern raised and the child requires a special full assessment to make sure all their vital organs have developed properly etc... Enough oxygen flow to their brain?
Thus, all this adds to the fact that season plays no important factor in development delay of a child... Enviornment does, The mother's diet and lifestyle does before pregnancy.
What you can add to this maybe the MMR vaccine controversey - how the research dated back in 1988 caused a huge controversy and how some researcher linked MMR vaccine to children developing AUTISM... and how that research turned out to be complete bull and the doctor got taken off the researcher - Thus you can conclude, the validty of your own research and prolly suggst it may cause controvery unless, there is some solid proof to suggest season has got anythign to do with development delays in a child?
Reasons supporting that Seasons makes a difference.
_ Is it the case that a winter baby is more likely to be exposed to sun and that affects the unborn? is the mother biopolar lol? Most bipolar mothers are extremely happy during summer and depressed during winter - Season affects moods? So if a child was to be conceived at the start of the year, they are more likely to be exposed to good seasons, summer, sun and that affects the unborn? I have no idea.
Ahh anyways, i have no idea, what i just blabbered there. I should get back to studying - Goodluck, and if you have any research on Mental Health - SEND THEM TO ME! Pm ( Although i dont log on daily here, but err 😆) Are you researching on mental health in terms of psychiatric illness? Or factors which influence a person's state of mind ?
Lastly - Goodluck,. may i read your stuff when you done? 😆
edited, as i read my answer and realised it was full of spelling mistakes. 😆 - i suppose it still is lmao.

The points that you have identified got my brain doing summersaults! It really got me thinking... There are so many influences out there which can have an impact on brain development. Why didn't i think of that? Hmmm i guess its a summer born disorder 😆 But thanks ! Everyone's comment here has really allowed me form a good argument, Gracias !
