Tusshar gets his girlfriend home but is scared to introduce her as such to his class- and caste-conscious father (Anupam Kher) because she is a Punjabi whereas they are Rajasthani Rajputs. What follows is a crazy comedy. Read the review of Chaar Din Ki Chandni for more.

Top Angle Productions and GRS Pictures' Chaar Din Ki Chandni (UA) is a comedy. Chandraveer Singh (Anupam Kher) is a royal Rajput who lives in Rajasthan and is very class- and caste-concious. He has four sons, Udaybhan Singh (Mukul Dev), Prithvi Singh (Chandrachur Singh), Yashwant Singh (Sushant Singh) and Veer Vikram Singh (Tusshar), and a daughter, Divya Kumari (Shruti Sharma). Veer Vikram Singh comes from London to attend the marriage of his sister to a high-bred Rajput boy. While he informs his mother, Devika Singh (Anita Raaj), that his girlfriend, Chandni (Kulraj Randhawa), would be accompanying him from London, he develops cold feet when he confronts his strict father, because Chandni is a Punjabi, not a Rajput. Unable to introduce her as the girl he would like to marry, he instead introduces her to his father and, therefore, the rest of the family, as a journalist who had come there to cover the royal wedding.

Chandni soon makes a place for herself in Chandraveer Singh's heart and fools him into believing that if she would not get married soon, she may have to remain a spinster all her life. Chandraveer Singh promises to find a good bridegroom for her before the deadline.

Within no time, Chandni's parents, Fatoor Singh (Om Puri) and Pammi Singh (Farida Jalal), land in Rajasthan on learning that she and her boyfriend are there. They are about to introduce themselves to Chandraveer Singh as Chandni's parents but Veer Vikram Singh saves the day by saying, Fatoor Singh (Om Puri), was an ace decorator from Punjab, whom he had called for the wedding arrangements. Soon, Chandraveer Singh asks Fatoor Singh if he knew of a suitable boy for Chandni. Fatoor Singh, just for the heck of it, says, Pappi Singh would be a very appropriate match. Now, Chandraveer Singh wants to meet Pappi Singh and warns Fatoor Singh that he would shoot him if Pappi Singh did not immediately come from Punjab as time for Chandni's marriage was running out. Since there is no Pappi Singh in reality, it falls upon Veer Vikram Singh to pose as Pappi Singh, with turban et al. Pappi Singh, in disguise, wins Chandraveer Singh's heart.

What happens thereafter? Do Chandni and Pappi Singh get married? Or does Veer Vikram Singh come clean and tell his father that he loves Chandni? What is Chandraveer Singh's reaction when he learns the truth?

Chaar Din Ki Chandni Review: Script Analysis

Babaji's story is farcical and he prepares the audience for it right from the word 'go'. There are exaggerated scenes and situations but if the viewer doesn't mind them, it is because the story doesn't pretend to be otherwise. Screenplay writers Amit Masurkar and Nishant Hada have complemented the story beautifully by writing farcical comedy scenes which have the audience in splits. Not just that, the writers have also sketched out such outlandish characters that they by themselves make people laugh. In this regard, special mention must be made of the characters of Chandraveer Singh, Fatoor Singh, Pappi Singh (Tusshar), Udaybhan Singh, Prithvi Singh, Yashwant Singh, Paan Singh (enacted by Johnny Lever), Lt. Shaitan Singh (Rahul Singh), Manjeet Singh (Rana Jung Bahadur) and Guddu alias Tedha Medha (Sudhir Kumar).

The first half impresses more for the characters rather than the scenes. Of course, some scenes in the pre-interval portion are funny but the characters are funnier. The interval point gives the audience the feeling that there's good comedy in store for them in the second half and it must be said, the writers have more than lived up to the expectations because the post-interval part turns out to be quite a laugh riot. The writers have taken care to add a couple of Indian family sentiments in the comic drama, which touch the heart. Credit must be given to the dialogues and punch-lines penned by Amit Masurkar and Nishant Hada.

On the minus side, besides the ordinary first half, is the fact that too much emphasis has been laid on comedy without really developing the romantic track. Even the music, especially the songs originally composed for the film, needed to be more soulful.

Chaar Din Ki Chandni Review: Star Performances

Tusshar lives his role. He is very good as Veer Vikram Singh and shines as Pappi Singh. Kulraj Randhawa plays Chandni ably and with understanding. Anupam Kher is excellent and evokes laughter plenty of times. Om Puri does a marvellous job and shines in the role of Fatoor Singh. He deserves high praise for his effortless performance. Anita Raaj puts in a dignified show. Mukul Dev has his moments and makes them extremely entertaining. Sushant Singh is as natural as natural can be and deserves distinction marks. Chandrachur Singh lends good support. Rahul Singh is effective. Johnny Lever stands his own and is especially funny in the climax sequence. Sudhir Kumar evokes plenty of laughter as Guddu alias Tedha Medha. Farida Jalal is endearing. Harish gets very little scope as Suryaveer Singh, brother of Chandraveer Singh, but he does make his presence felt in the pre-climax scene. Rana Jung Bahadur, as Manjeet Singh, deserves special mention for a job brilliantly done. Hemant Pandey is alright as Ghadiyal Singh. Avtar Gill, Shruti Sharma, Manav Vij and Lokesh Tilakdhari lend adequate support.

Chaar Din Ki Chandni Review: Direction & Music

Samir Karnik's direction is nice. Despite the farcical comedy, he has been able to sustain the audience's interest right till the end, which is creditable. To Samir Karnik's credit, it must also be said that he has used all the actors very effectively and not let any of them go overboard, something which could've easily happened in an over-the-top comedy such as this. Music (Sandesh Shandilya, RDB, Anaya, Shiv Hari, Abhishek Ray and Dr. Zeus) is a mixed bag. While the remixed version of the Chandni o meri Chandni song (RDB) and theKangna song (Dr. Zeus) are excellent, the other songs needed to be better. Lyrics (Sandeep Shrivastav) are alright. Song picturisations (Bosco-Caesar) are eye-filling. Sanjay Chowdhury's background music is effective and augments the fun element. Analarsu's action scenes go well with the film's mood. Kabir Lal's camerawork is splendid. Sets (Jitendra Kava) are appropriate. Editing (Mukesh Thakur) is sharp.

Chaar Din Ki Chandni Review: Komal Nahta's Verdict

On the whole, Chaar Din Ki Chandni is an enjoyable and entertaining fare and will pick up on the strength of positive mouth publicity. Despite a dull start, it has the merits to ultimately prove an earning proposal. However, since business today largely depends on the first weekend collections, the poor start will ultimately come in the way of realisation of the film's full potential.

Chaar Din Ki Chandni
By Taran Adarsh, 8 Mar 2012, 16:58 hrs IST
Be forewarned: Don't look for logic here! Escapist cinema or films that suspend logic, but entertain, are often at the receiving end of assessors and evaluators. Movies helmed by Rohit Shetty, Sajid Khan, veterans like David Dhawan, Priyadarshan and Anees Bazmee, besides the recent box-office bonanzas featuring Salman Khan, have had to face vicious and destructive criticism. Despite this, films fitting in the genre [escapist fares] have found colossal consent from spectators across the board, primarily because they serve the purpose of keeping you entertained in those two hours. It's like choosing fast food from one of those popular joints. You may argue, it's low on nutritional value, but it does satisfy your taste buds nonetheless.

Riding high on the success of the runaway hit YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA, Samir Karnik comes up with CHAAR DIN KI CHANDNI, a film that makes no pretensions of rewriting the rules of the game. Following the footsteps of his peers, this one's aimed at the masses and not the inflexible critics who rarely give their approval or high ratings to these hardcore entertainers. The sole mantra of these movies is to make you grin/chuckle/giggle at the most inane jokes, most frivolous situations… logic be damned.

CHAAR DIN KI CHANDNI is not a movie to be taken seriously. Neither does it boast of an intensely ingenious tale. Nor is there an intellectual appealing screenplay in place, right from commencement till the very conclusion. But what keeps the film going are some ridiculously comical sequences. Despite the emphasis on barmy and wacky situations, despite the jokes being puerile and infantile, the movie keeps you entertained for most parts, especially in its second hour. The motive, therefore, is served.

CHAAR DIN KI CHANDNI is set against the backdrop of Rajasthan, during the course of a four-day wedding. It orbits around a Rajput family unit [Anupam Kher, Anita Raaj, Chandrachur Singh, Mukul Dev, Sushant Singh, Tusshar] and a family from Punjab [Om Puri, Farida Jalal, Kulraj Randhawa]. Tusshar is a Rajasthani who loves Kulraj, a Punjabi. But the patriarch of the family [Anupam Kher] is a staunch Rajput, which prompts Tusshar to hide Kulraj's identity. All hell breaks loose when the truth is out!

Like YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA, CHAAR DIN KI CHANDNI has a plethora of actors essaying over the top characters. Also, like his previous film, Karnik reserves the best for the second hour. In fact, the first hour doesn't quite work. The humor appears forced, the jokes are corny, the one-liners are plain gibberish, the double entendres are unsavory. Most significantly, the laugh-out-loud moments are lacking. The sequences featuring Kulraj with Chandrachur Singh, Mukul Dev and Sushant Singh are humdrum and only slacken the tempo. A lot many films lose spark post interval, but not in this case. It's a zany and madcap ride from the interlude spot, replete with humorous gags, daft situations and uproarious dialogue. The entire Pappi Sardar episode, though asinine, is amusing nonetheless. You only yearn that some of the gags were even more side splitting. The conclusion, a replica of YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA, is chaotic. Nonetheless, it makes for one crazy viewing.

At heart, CHAAR DIN KI CHANDNI is a love story, but Karnik sprinkles the plot with ingredients that tantamount to entertainment in the lexis of the hoi polloi. Also, this wild-ride is smartly paced, with one episode following another in quick succession. But Karnik could've done with a superior script. The film falls short of remaining connected consistently, while the hilarity quotient varies from riotous to humdrum. CHAAR DIN KI CHANDNI has multiple music composers scoring the music, but the tracks that stand out are 'Kangna Tera Ni', 'Chandni O Meri Chandni' and the track in the end credits. The cinematography is alright, while the dialogue are witty at times.

Tusshar is at his boisterous best here. In fact, the actor strikes a right balance between understated and animated, getting the wit of the character just right. Besides, there's a lot of verve in his character; he is vibrant, energetic and is likely to endear himself to the viewer, especially when he enacts the part of Pappi Sardar. Kulraj is a livewire and reminds you of Preity Zinta on several occasions. She performs very well. The film has a strong supporting cast and while veterans Anupam Kher and Om Puri, expectedly, dominate the show, it's a pleasure to watch Chandrachur Singh after a hiatus. He's proficient. Anita Raaj too makes an appearance after a gap and she's simply wonderful. I'd like to single out Rahul Singh. He excels. Farida Jalal gets no scope. Mukul Dev and Sushant Singh try too hard, while Johny Lever is wasted. Ditto for Harish.

On the whole, uninhibited and naughty, CHAAR DIN KI CHANDNI is an enjoyable madcap comic caper with adequate frenzied moments to keep you in your seats. A good laugh is assured!

Story

Story: Chaar Din Ki Chandni begins with Maharaja CV Singh (Anupam Kher), who is proud of his royalty and is rigid about marriages in equal class. His lazy sons Mukul Dev, Sushant Singh, Chandrachur Singh and Harish forcefully live up to his terms and in bargain, enjoy the royal status. His only educated son Veer (Tusshar Kapoor) is too in awe of him, but falls for Chandni (Kulraj Randhawa) while studying in London. Veer brings Chandni to his mansion in Jodhpur, where out of fear, he introduces her as a journalist, who is interested in covering his sister's royal wedding. Now, will Veer gather guts to announce his love to father or remain mum forever, is the rest of the story?

Story Treatment: Too much of old wine in a new bottle defines this flick the best. It runs short on originality, both in terms of substance and style. In the age, where Indian cinema boasts of out of the box and techno savvy concepts, films like Chaar Din' come as a shocker with a thin plotline which revolves around a 'Hero', 'Heroine' and a villain for a 'Baap'. The only saving grace are some noteworthy performances, but they too fall prey to poorly written dialogues.

Star Cast: Tusshar Kapoor beautifully switches the lanes from a sophisticated guy to a loud, ill-mannered Sikh. Kulraj Randhawa is brilliant initially, but gets sidelined post interval. Anupam Kher gives a flawless performance, but the monotonous nature of his character kills his efforts. While Om Puri as Chandni's father induces some life into the film, but he too, after a point starts to bore, mother Farida Jalal is simply wasted. Mukul Dev, Sushant Singh, Chandrachur Singh play their parts well but Harish barely talks. Johny Lever and Anita Raj as CV Singh's rival and wife respectively, are good in their small but pivotal roles.

Direction: To glorify a tiny simple subject into a full-fledged drama by adding old elements to screenplay is what Samir Karnik's direction is all about. He surely succeeded in his last release Yamla Pagla Deewana with the same trick, courtesy the Deols. But, nobody can save Chaar Din Ki Chandni, where his favourite formula will fall flat, especially as it strikes an uncanny resemblance to Yamla' in terms of direction. What compounds further to the misery are the 'ghisse-pitte' (stereotypical) dialogues and a screenplay which leaves one with nothing but abundant dj vus.

Music/ Dialogues/ Cinematography/Editing: Music too, doesn't ring a bell because of its lack of novelty. The question that arises most importantly is why anybody would take the pains of buying an album that comprises of songs heard time and again. Dialogues too leave one in despair, cinematography impresses at some points. Editing is strictly okay.

3ups and downs: Good performances by one and all make one sail through the film at least once. Cinematography and crisp editing are the other strong points. Direction, storyline, screenplay, dialogues are the drawbacks.

On the whole, Chaar Din Ki Chandni stands no chance to woo cine-goers in front of Vidya Balan's Kahaani, which releases the same day.
