National acclaim for small films

Three Tamil films bag prestigious awards at the national level

Aaranya Kaandam, Azhagarsamiyin Kuthiran and Vaagai Sooda Vaa — three small films that did not exactly rock the Tamil box office — got national recognition when they were announced in the list of National Awards.
Appukutty, who impressed audiences with his performance in Azhagarsamiyin Kuthirai, bagged the award for Best Supporting Actor. Says Suseenthiran, who directed the flick, "I'm so happy for Appukutty, who did a wonderful job in the movie. I'm glad that the film clicked at the national level and I hope to do more such films that will get the entire team recognition." The film, which has Appukutty and his horse in lead roles, was much appreciated for its comic elements and simple screenplay.
Another film that rocked Kollywood last year was Aaranya Kaandam, the movie that marked the debut of director Thiagarajan Kumararaja who bagged the award in the Best Debutant Director category. He says, "I'd have been happier if the cinematographer, music composer and a few actors in my movie had also been named in the awards' list. Having said that, I'm happy that we've got two honours for the film."
Tamil actress and director Revathy also won an award in the non-feature film category for her movie
Red Building where the Sun Sets.
