Part VII

"Khushi ji' andar aa jaaiye (come in)," Anjali beckoned, a sad smile on her face.

Khushi walked in, her steps faltering, as she saw the expressions on their faces. Mami ji screwed up her nose in distaste with a "Hmmphh!" Mama ji looked extremely disappointed, and Shyam looked like he could kill a man barehanded right then.

Nani ji's straight-faced look didn't bring much comfort either.

"Khushi ji, chhote aur aap ki iss harkat se iss ghar mein koi khush nahin hai (Khushiji, none of us here is happy with what you and Chhote have done)," started Anjali, in a disappointed and pained voice.

"Haan Rani Sahiba, yeh dono to maafi key laayak hi nahin hai (Yes Rani Sahiba, these two are not worthy of forgiveness)," added Shyam, looking extremely disgusted.

Khushi's eyes shot up in his direction, the revulsion on her face barely hidden.

"Aur hum dono maafi bhi nahin maangne vale jija ji (And we are not going to apologize either)."

There was a collective gasp, as all eyes looked beyond Khushi, at Arnav, who was standing right behind her.

"Theek hai' maan lete hain ki aap sab ko na bataa ke hamne galti ki, par aap hi to chahte the ki main shaadi kar loon (Ok' let's say that we committed a mistake by not telling you about it, but it's you folks that wanted me to get hitched)," he added.

"Chhote! Aap baat nahin samajh rahein hain (Chhote, you're clearly not understanding the matter)," Nani ji countered.

"Nani ji, kya kahoon' baat hi aise thi ki hum dono aur intezaar nahin kar sakte the (Nani ji, what can I say? The matter was such that we couldn't wait any longer)," Arnav muttered

"Kya?!! (What?!!)," Mami ji exclaimed. "Aise kaun si baat thi ki tum dono ko yeh kadam uthana padaa?! Kaun no gadbad to nahin hui gavaa?! (What was it that caused you to take such a step?! Hope nothing untoward has happened!!)"

Arnav and Khushi shot each other distressed glances, and then Arnav's expression changed.

"Manorama!" yelled Nani ji. "Aap soch samajh ke boliye' (Think before you speak)."

"Actually Nani' mami theek keh rahi hai' aisa hi kuch hai (Actually Nani' mami is right' it's something like that)," Arnav butted in, smoothly.

"Aa' aap kya keh rahe hain' saale saab?!! (What are you saying, brother-in-law?)," stammered Shyam, his irritation and anger barely contained.

"Haan Chhote' iska kya matlab?! (Yes Chhote' what do you mean by this?!)," added Anjali.

Khushi's face was flushed, the insinuation he'd and the accusatory glances cast in their direction were getting to her! She tried to calm her irregular breath, her rapidly pulsating heart and fought back her tears.

How dare he imply something like that?!

Sensing her discomfort, Arnav grimaced.

Sorry, but one's got to do what one gotta do sometimes' anyway, this can't be as bad as what she's really been up to!

Khushi's innver voice screamed'

This was so not right!!Wish I could tell them like it is!

She bit her tongue, scared that she might open her mouth and say something she would forever regret. After all, she was bound by the silence he'd forced on her, the promises she'd made to him under duress.

But all this was too much for her' she swooned.

Shyam immediately rushed forward, "Khushi ji' aap theek to hain?! (You ok?)"

Arnav was quicker; he reached out for her, grasping her by her waist, and leaning her back into him.

"Aap chinta mat ki jiye, jija ji. Main hoon Khushi ka khayaal rakhne ke liye (Don't worry jija ji. I'm here to take care of Khushi)," he said.

He bent down and lifted her lifeless form into his arms, and headed towards Nani ji's bed.

Mami ji, Anjali and Nani ji were shocked beyond disbelief. Khushi had fainted again! And Arnav had made some really leading statements!

Putting their differences aside, Anjali limped towards the bedside table and poured out a glass of water.

"Lee jiye, Chhote (Here' take this)," she said, handing him the glass.

"Thanks Di," Arnav replied, as he poured some water into his cupped hand and sprinkled it on Khushi's face.

Khushi came about to find Arnav sitting in front of her, with Nani ji right behind. She looked more upset than she had been when Khushi had walked into her room, a few minutes ago.

"Aap theek to hain, Khushi ji? (Are you ok?)" Anjali asked gently.

"Theek kyon nahin hogi' Arnav bitwa ko apne jaal mein phasaa ke! (Why won't she be ok? Now that she's trapped Arnav)" Mami ji muttered before Nani ji's fuming glances shut her up.

Khushi was so embarrassed; she put her head down in shame. Arnav's hand reached out to caress her head.

"Actually Mami' iss mein Khushi ki koi galti nahin hai (Actually Mami' this is not Khushi's fault)," Arnav said quietly.

Khushi looked up, her eyes wide open and gulped.

"Waise hum doctor ke paas nahin gaye hain.. par main koi chances nahin lena chahta tha' aur maine yeh theek samjha (We haven't gone to the doctor yet'but I didn't want to take any chances and thought this was best)," Arnav added, his eyes focused on hers, daring her to call his bluff.

For those of you that wanted a long update! Every time I start to write with a particular plot in mind, this story gets ahead of me... and so do the characters! So this isn't what I started out with... but well!
