Chapter 1 - Happy Birthday Mommy!

The alarm went off forcing Khushi to moan and turn in bed. It kept on beeping and finally, she emerged her hand out of the warm blanket and turned it off. Minutes later, she got up and stretched while yawning in bed.

She smiled at the thought of what the day held for her. Without wasting a second, she rushed to get ready. As she was drying her hair, she walked out to the balcony and looked around the place. Everyone was busy getting to places. But, that's how it always has been in New York. Since the last six years she's been there, she sees that each day.

It seems to be a huge, messy crowd. But it's amazing to her how everyone still manages to get to places without walking over people. She came out of her gazing moment as she realized she could be getting late.

She rushed to the room besides her and opened the door. It was dead silent and very quiet. She made her way to the window and opened it slowly, letting the sun rays softly hit the blanket.

From underneath a blanket, came a groaned voice and the person turned to face the other side. She bit her lip and made her way to the bed. She sat next to the person and brushed her hair. It was none other than her little 5 year old daughter Mahi. She spoke in a convincing tone. "Mahi, my love. Please get up."

"Mmm…" Mahi moaned and laid her head on Khushi's lap, eyes still shut. Khushi giggled and tickled Mahi. Mahi laughed and tried to defend herself from her mother's attacks. A while later, she opened her eyes not able to tolerate her own laughter. "Mom, I'm up. Stop it na."

Khushi sat back down and let Mahi rest her head on her lap again. Mahi stayed silent and felt Khushi's rhythmic breathing. Khushi continued playing with Mahi's hair and patting it. That is how it was every day for them. Khushi would wake up Mahi and then both will sit there silently. Neither of them would be talking but still able to understand each other's thoughts.

After a long moment of silence, Mahi asked what she always asks to break the silence, "What's for breakfast?"

Khushi snapped out of her thoughts and looked at Mahi. "You only like toast for breakfast. Then why do you even ask honey?"

Mahi grinned at her and Khushi grinned back. She knew the answer to that. Both replied together, "Because I love you."

They giggled and Mahi sat up in bed. Khushi got up and opened her closet. Go get ready fast and I'll prepare your lunch.

Mahi walked her mother take out her clothes for the day. She smiled knowing the date and called out, "Mommy?"

Khushi turned slightly to look at her. Mahi motioned her to come to her as she stood up on bed and walked to the end of it making sure to not fall down. Khushi smiled and went to her. Mahi put her arms around her mother's neck and whispered in her ears, "Happy birthday mommy."

Khushi smiled the happiest smile back and hugged her. "Thanks love."

Unknowingly, as always, tears flowed down her cheek and onto Mahi's shoulder as she thanked God for blessing her with such a wonderful and understanding daughter. Sniffing, she parted from Mahi. Mahi wiped her tears softly with her soft, clumsy small hands. Khushi kissed the inside of her palm and then said, "Get ready." She picked her up and carefully made her stand on the floor.

Mahi trotted away in the bathroom and Khushi went out of the room.

On the other side of the globe, everyone fussed around here and there looking for the lord of the house. None other than Arnav Singh Raizada. They were so used to staying with Khushi that eventually, they couldn't help but call him lad governor as well at times. But they knew better than to say it to his face.

Anjali convinced nani, "Nani, don't worry. He'll come back soon. You know what day it is today…"

Nani remembered and nodded. How can she forget? It was Khushi's birthday today. It was night time in India, so her birthday was almost over according to them. But that's how it had been in the Raizada mansion for the last six years. Each year, on this day, Arnav would go into hiding as this day bothered him the most. The pain inside of him. The pain which was caused when he had woken up to find Khushi nowhere near him.

Just a letter that said 'Go on in life. Yours, Khushi.'

Ever since, he had again shut himself from the world and would busy himself in work day and night. He'd forget that there were others in the house worried for him. He wouldn't care about anything. At times, he would even have to think very hard to remember who 'Khushi' was. But on this one day, no matter how much he hardens himself, he can't forget Khushi.

It was almost close to 10:00 p.m. he stepped into the house, stopped to look at others in the living room and continued to go to his room. He didn't say a word and the rest of the family didn't dare to speak a word. They just let him be.

He passed the pool and stopped at gaze at the water for a while. He saw a reflection of Khushi in it. He dreaded over it and missed her badly. He whispered looking at the reflection of the moon in the water, "Happy birthday Khushi." He stood quiet for a second and then added, "Why?" with utmost painful emotions brewing up in his heart.

He heard Anjali coming in and he put on his bold face. He hid away all his pain. That's the Arnav the rest of the days in the whole year. He would be the same stern Arnav throughout the year. But this one day, he would go into hiding so he won't risk giving away his pain. Mostly to his sister, Anjali, who was the first one to make him realize that he was falling in love.

Anjali stood at a distance and he disappeared in his room. She sighed and turned back around and left.
