Mohinder Handa smiled politely as he tried to make generic conversation with the young man sitting in front of him. It was late in the evening and his mother-in-law had managed to arrange a meeting with Adhiraj Agnihotri, an upcoming manager at a leading firm. He seemed smart and confident and he was holding up conversation well, nonspecific as it was, with someone as distinguished as Mohinder Handa. He wondered where Geet was. It was time she was home; he knew she had been informed about what was awaiting her. He had known she'd be reluctant and had asked Maan to ensure that she reached home soon.
Picking up his cup of tea, he glanced towards the door again to see Geet walk in. She hadn't changed from her dance clothes. He noticed Adhiraj glance at her sleeveless shirt and knee length shorts. She pulled off the bag that was slung across her as she glanced back at Maan walking behind her.
Mohinder saw Maan glance back at him and nod slightly at him. He felt gratitude well-up inside him, as he realized Maan must have talked her into coming. He knew Maan was against the idea of this arranged meeting, but his presence made Mohinder feel more relaxed.
Geet flopped down on the sofa opposite Adhiraj and threw her bag to a side. It was a sight that was not unfamiliar to Mohinder. It was something she did every day. He only wished she'd treat the occasion with respect.
Trying to divert his attention he spoke, "Adhiraj bete, this is Maan, our family friend". Adhiraj half glanced and nodded at Maan, not bothering with any formalities.
Geet finally sat up and looked at Adhiraj.
"Hi, I'm Geet'', she said, politely to Adhiraj, extending her hand.
To say that Adhiraj was surprised by the sight she presented, was an understatement. He shook her hand nonetheless, and replied in kind. Maan watched them look at each other, sizing each other up.
A distraction came when Nanima entered bring fresh snacks. She laid them on the table. Geet picked one from the plate offered to her and sat back to look at Adhiraj.
"So Adhiraj", she asked, "what do you do?"
"Beta, he's a manager at a firm", her father said with a bit of firmness in his voice. It was clear he was displeased with her appearance and behaviour.
Geet ignored him. "Oh that's nice, Adhiraj... I dance. And, I instruct students at Studio 77. Do you like dancing?"
"No. To be frank, I think it's a waste of time." Adhiraj said, looking back at her levelly, without any hint of censure .
"Oh, what are your hobbies, then?" she asked blandly.
"Well, I play golf and I like speculating about the stock market."
"Hmm...," she said in the same tone he had used. ''sounds boring''.
"Well, at least it's productive.", he replied, with a patronizing smile.
"Err...bete", Nanima interrupted in a coaxing voice. "Geet used to help out at her father's office. Isn't it, Geet?"
"It was only for a while. It got dull after that."
Maan squirmed in his seat. Things were getting uncomfortable.
"But bete, that's what you will be doing after marriage.", Nanima said, trying to cover up. " Don't worry Adhiraj, this dance is just a hobby.", she said, with a false smile.
"Oh, I know ma'am. I'm sure Geet wont indulge in such hobbies. It's natural."
"I'm sorry", said Geet sharply, " but I don't understand what is natural".
Maan could almost see the sparks she seemed to be letting off and wondered how Adhiraj sat so calmly in his seat.
"Come on, Geet. You can't do all these things after our marriage. It's not done. ", Adhiraj said again, in a kind patronizing voice.
It was all that was needed for her to jump out of her seat and glare at him. "Thanks for coming, but I think I'm done here. ...No papa, it's not going to happen. I'm going to my room. See you later Maan. "
"Geet...Geet", Mohinder yelled at her retreating form, but she walked in, ignoring him.
"Relax, Mr. Handa." Adhiraj pacified. " If you don't mind I'd like to go and talk to her".
"I don't think that's such a great idea. " Maan interrupted.
"I agree with Maan. It's best to leave her alone when she's angry", Mohinder agreed.
"I'm sure I'll get her around, don't you worry Sir.", Adhiraj smiled on.
Mohinder looked doubtful, but before he could reply Adhiraj made his way inside.
Maan stood up in trepidation. A sinking feeling was forming in his chest.

Geet turned around her room, flinging her shoes off. She paced the floor angrily, looking for something to take her frustration out on, then sat on the chair and counted till 10. She heard a footfall outside her door and spoke without looking up, "Papa, I am not going to reconsider...could you please leave me alone for a while. I don't want to say something to you in a fit of anger".
"Now that's much better! You are quite well-behaved.", she heard from the doorway.
Jerking up, she saw Adhiraj smirking at her. He walked in and looked around her room.
"Hmmm...neat and tidy aren't you? That's good. I like neatness. It won't be a bother then."
"What are you doing here?", she asked her anger barely in check.
"You know, you walking away when elders are in the room is bad manners.", he said, ignoring her.
"Yeah , of course you know, seeing as you walked into a girl's room uninvited, without the simplest courtesy of knocking. ", she bit out, her voice rising.
"That goes for a toss when the girl in question is the one I'm going to marry."
Geet stared at him in disbelief and anger for a minute, then turned away from him and spoke with forced calm, "Look, dude, I just want to be clear about this. I am not interested in pursuing this. I was never interested in getting married. I am not used to being forced into anything."

Adhiraj Agnihotri was a winner. He prided on himself on achieving all his goals. Ambition ruled him, inflating his ego, making him set his goals on higher things. As he had won success after success, life had become easier and world seemed to serve itself on a platter for him. Hence, the prospect of an arranged marriage to Mohinder Handa's daughter seemed appropriate and fitting. He had walked into Geet's room, sure that he'd have a story to boast about, once he left it. He was known for his persuasion skills, especially with the ladies. And so the unexpected refusal from Geet felt like poking hot iron to his pride.
"...I am not used to being forced into anything" she was saying.
He whirled around and grabbed her shoulders in a vice grip turning her around. Pushing his face in hers, he glared, "...and I don't like hearing a no. If I've chosen to say yes to yo'", but he couldn't continue .
The next instant the only thing he was aware of , was being physically lifted off the ground by Maan, and thrown across the floor.
Maan leaned into his face and hissed angrily.
"You dare manhandle her once more, and I'll make sure you're unable to handle even a piece of paper for the rest of your life."
He sprang up to fight back only to be knocked back on the floor, with a punch in his face. He couldn't fight the dizziness that rose, neither could he help himself, as he felt himself being dragged out of the room, or being thrown out of the mansion under the shocked gazes of Geet's father and grandmother.
