Ambitious youngsters with starry dreams no longer wait for that elusive Bollywood break. With big production houses churning out enough soaps on the idiot box, there's always work for aspiring actors.Smriti Z. Irani and Saakshi Tanwar make room for TV's new faces. The bright, spunky brigade comprises actors who are seldom over 25, ooze confidence, are remarkably down-to-earth, and take home a neat pay packet too.
Over the past few months we've already seen a damburst: Aamna Shariff (Kahin To Hoga), Kulraj Kaur (Kareena Kareena), Karishma Tanna (Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Koi Dil Mein Hai), Tina Parakh (Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki), Eijaj Khan (Kesar), besides Aashka Goradia, Rucha Gujrati, Shruti Seth and Chetan Hansraj (Kkusum). Then there are new soaps like Remix, which depends mainly on new faces (Shweta Gulati, Priya Wal, Karanveer Wahi and Raj Singh) to garner TRPs.
Most of them would tell you that Bollywood doesn't fit in their scheme of things yet. Reasons 21-year-old Delhi girl Priya: "Remix is a cool show for youngsters. So, shooting for 16 hours a day is fun. Besides, it ensures a decent bank balance. I have no plans of doing films." Affirms
Kulraj Kaur of Kareena Kareena: "The money's important, and the role will help me establish myself." If 16-hour shifts leave them with very little time for themselves, most of them aren't complaining. Says Aamna Shariff, 22: "Television is a satisfying career. I have a job most girls envy and if I don't have a personal life, I don't want one either." Concurs Delhi boy Karanveer Wahi, "I'd rather work than spend my waking hours partying. Unlike guys my age, I have a healthier bank balance and a satisfying career. What else can I ask for?" says the Commerce graduate.
All they want is job satisfaction, the ambitious youngsters insist. And, of course, primetime fame.
