Pongal is what we call it as...

as you quoted, a rice dish Pongal(sweet pongal) made of rice ,jaggery with coconut(little bit) and garnished with cashew , Dry grapes and Elaki.. will be made...

One more Pongal is just like the white rice for which side dishes are prepared...

And share it with sugarcane .

actually in our place ,its said ,all forms of taste should be added and we should have all in life...

So the side dishes along with pongal made will have each taste, one for sweet, one for Khatti
and more (I dont know how to explain all😳) , we will have most of the vegetables( atleast four or five side dishes)...

Its a welcoming we give for nature and pray them...

When Pongal is kept, they will first put some milk with water and make it to overflow and then add rice and prepare the pongal in our place.

And its treated as a auspicious day that says, when milk is overflown , happiness will also overflow in their Life and all good will happen... Just the tradition we follow...

Lohri - the popular bonfire festival of North India is celebrated on 13th January every year. As the date of Lohri is decided according to the position of the sun its date remains fixed. Lohri marks the coldest day of winter. People of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi joyfully pass it by dancing around the sacred bonfires. Lohri Festival gives some respite to the people as it marks the end of tough winter season.

The 'Maghi' DaySignificance of Lohri Date
The 13th day of January or the date of Lohri is considered extremely auspicious by Hindus as it marks the sun's entry in to the 'Makar Rashi' (the Capricorn) from the Tropic of Cancer. In other words, sun starts moving towards Uttarayan (North) from Dakshinayana (south). The earth is farthest from the sun at this time and begins its journey towards the sun. Thus, marking the end of the coldest month of the year (Paush) and the beginning of the month of Magh (January- February). Lohri also marks the last day of the month of Maargazhi, the ninth month of the lunar calendar.

The period of Uttarayan (January 14 to July 14) is regarded sacred by Hindus. According to Bhagwat Gita, Lord Krishna manifests himself in his full magnificence during this time. Festival of Lohri is succeeded by Makar Sankranthi. The auspicious date of Sankranthi (January 14) is celebrated all over the country by different names and in different manner.

Promise of Golden Harvest
In Punjab, Rabi or winter crop is sown in the month of October and harvested in the month of March or April. For the farming community mid-January is an apt time to celebrate Lohri as fields are blooming and promising a golden harvest at that time. Besides, January is the period of rest for farmers as there is still sometime before they begin cutting of the crop.

Makar Sankranti Festival

India has its own different way of celebrating everything, be it seasons, Harvesting time,State cultures and traditions or anything. Makar Sankranti is the same festival when the Sun(the Protector of life) enters into the line of Capricorn. It is a symbol of rejuvenating time for Earth. It is time when in India, winter is about to bid farewell and spring is eager to step in.

Makar Sankranti is a kind of religious occasion which emphasizes the relationship of the Sun with the life on the Earth. Sun symbolizes for spiritual illumination, knowledge, and wisdom. Makar Sankranti means that we opt for moving toward the light of knowledge from the darkness of delusion. It specifies the beginning of a new life with the inner light.

It is an auspicious occasion for Hindu they celebrate this festival by having a holy dip into river Ganges. As a sacred ritual there's a tradition to donate money and Khichadi (raw or cooked mixture of pulse & rice) to the poor.

From north to the South and from east to the west this festival has same significance though there are variations in the name. In Tamilnadu it is known as Pongal, in Andhra it is known as Bhogi, Bihu it has the name in Assam whereas Sankranti in Karnataka.Makar Sankranti falls on January 14th of every year. This is the best time to start your pilgrimage tour in India, most probably to char dham pilgrimage of Uttaranchal.
