Story: In 1915 Romania sent its pure gold collection worth a zillion crores to Russia for safe deposit. Russia of course chose to never give it back. But now good bilateral terms between the two countries means Russia is sending all that gold back to Romania. How? Just the way it came -- by train. That simple? Not really especially when there are some well trained players out there whose mission is to get that gold...

Movie Review: From its very original version in 1969, with its classic cast of Michael Caine, Noel Coward and Benny Hill to the much later 2003 version with Donald Sutherland, Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron and other stalwarts, the Italian Job has been entertaining its viewers as amongst Hollywood's most fascinating thriller films which involve a simple plot of stealing gold worth $35 million from the canals of Venice to LA. The transfer is supposed to take place over a high Alpine pass that hasn't been disturbed since the time of Hannibal and the fact that it all gets messed up due to human error and modern technology only makes humans to turn out more puny than they seem. Natural laws are after all always supreme, never to be challenged. But ah! for human greed... Can you expect something like this from our desi Players, a supposedly Indian vision of the Italian Job?

Charlie ( Abhishek Bachchan) is the catalyst behind the mission to steal gold worth crores for himself and his role model Victor Dada ( Vinod Khanna). Naturally then, Dada, the bad man in jail repenting for his earlier sins, helps Charlie form a team of the world's best players. Once the team is in place, the deadline is 10 odd minutes to steal the gold from a moving train. This leads to a series of events where traitors and loyals are revealed creating mayhem in the hurriedly patched up team. While Bilal ( Sikander Kher) as the explosive expert and Rony ( Bobby Deol) as the illusionist make a brief cameo, it is Johnny Lever as the auto expert and Sunny ( Omi Vaidya) as the makeup expert who do manage to tickle the funny bone with their usual antics. On the other hand, Abhishek once again reprises the character of Dhoom he seems to have perfected while Bipasha goes glam as in Race. She doesn't mind bad company as long as it takes her to the pinnacle of material success. Sonam Kapoor (Naina) joins the team in the second half (though she is there in bits and piece in the first half). She wants to meet Neil since he is the one who killed her dad. That's where she puts her hacking knowledge and her body/looks to use since she is the only one Neil has not met before. But eventually, it is Neil Nitin Mukesh (Spider), the ultimate no-strings-attached man, wild gambler at heart with a twist in the soul and tango in the feet, who slam dances his way away as the ultimate crook. Music by Pritam is good while it lasts. Some editing sorely needed, visual imagery quite polished, and the look as usual is of new age Bollywood.

But would you go out for a DVD of Players and put it in that cherished section of your home video corner saying: Hundred movies to see before you die! All you brave Indian filmmakers, do pick up classics, but first, get a bit classic yourself and learn about cult film making which is so much different from commercial cinema. You'll find the difference. Your Bollywood ventures end up like cold cuts - stylishly done - are so different from piping hot goulash.

Has the reviewer even seen the movie? He only speaks about the plot which he probably knew from Italian Job. What of the acting, direction and other technical/creative stuff that goes to making of the movie. Seems like he slept thru the movie.

Players, suprisingly, is a good attempt

Abhishek, Sonam, Neil Mukesh, Bobby Deol? Well, that line up is good enough to put you off at any point of time. But, Abbas Mustan, the veteran Bollywood director duo, took the risk, even at the cost of alienating their own fans. And then i have seen the The Italian Job, from which the movie is suppsedly INSPIRED, atleast twice. So it took me a while to convince myself to head to the theater.

But, for your information, Abbas Mastan's Players is quite different from the Hollywood movie 'The Italian Job'. Yes, the basic plot concept remains the same. But what makes Players click, despite having a barrage of flop actors like Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Bobby Deol together, is that the film managed to surprise me with good twists and turns. Yes, I'll admit that I'm a big fan of Abbas-Mastan films, and they really didn't let me down this time too.

Is the film awesome? NO, of course not. but it is a pretty good thriller by Bollywood standards, i would say. The director duo made a very good attempt with the heist genre, which is very rarely attempted in Indian movies.

Individual performances are OK; liked Neil Mukesh particulary. Sonam, Abhishek are just watchable. What makes the difference is the technical prowess of the movie. Slick styles, razor sharp editing, crisp story telling complimented well with a lovely background score.

YES, you may still raise your eyebrows, but Players is worth your time and money!

PLAYERS quick movie review: Abhishek, Bipasha and Sonam are bad!

Abhishek Bachchan's run of bad luck seems to continue. It looks as if even Abbas-Mustan are unable to break the jinx. Our reviewer who is watching Players right now texted us during the interval to say, "So far Charlie's (Abhishek Bachchan) train is running on the main track with no major turns. One player has turned hostile. The robbery has been pulled off. Abhishek is okay, Bipasha (Basu) is sizzling hot and Sonam (Kapoor) has shown her middle finger. Certain scenes are watchable. The best part is the camera work. Music is flat, acting is bad." Uh oh. But Abhishek's fans, don't worry. If you remember, even Race had initially received a lukewarm response but went on to become a huge hit. Most thrillers are made or broken in the second half. Let's wait to see how Players' second half turns out. Abbas and Mustan are known for bringing in unexpected twists in the end, and we won't be surprised if they have one in this film too. Our full review is coming up soon so do watch this space!

Players Likely To Depend On Word Of Mouth

Thursday 5th January 2012 09.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Players will the first release of 2012 and the year will start with a big budget action thriller but the opening is not looking good. The advance all over is pretty dull and the film is likely to depend on word of mouth to get a jump in collections on Saturday and Sunday and come out with a decent weekend.

Players is getting a huge release of around 2000 screens so the potential to collect is there if it can manage good public reports.

The first day should do around 6 crore nett and that sort of collection gives a huge chance of big growth considering the release of the film. The directors Abbas Mustan have a good track record at the box office with these type of films and their last film Race (2008) was a huge hit so even with a not so happening cast and music, the content of the film may work.

Another advantage for the film is that there is no major release until Agneepath on 26th January so it has plenty of time to make a mark even with a low start.
