K'WOOD'S SURPRISE PACKAGES OF 2011

In the midst of routine commercial fare, this year, three directors jolted everyone with their films. And when it came to music, there were three who stood out amongst the lot. Chennai Times looks at six people who rocked the year that went by and who hold promise for 2012

THIAGARAJAN KUMARARAJA
AARANYA KAANDAM
Offbeat and racy, this film was one of the most acclaimed movies of the year. It was made for a mature, adult audience and everyone who watched it had words of appreciation for the director who had conjured such a script. Despite having no big names to boast of, the film gave Thiagarajan Kumararaja a unique stamp.

GIBRAN
VAAGAI SOODA VAA
Anybody who heard the opening few seconds of
Sara Sara'
would have guessed that this composer had immense musical talent. His fresh tunes, including the brilliant stock tune and vocals of Poraney', appealed to many music lovers and blended well with the subject.

SATHYA ENGAEYUM EPPODHUM
He made an impressive debut and provided some catchy tunes in the film that was otherwise not-so-musically driven. While his Govinda Govinda' is still hot in the TV stations playing Tamil songs, his clever use of simple beats and tunes in Masama' deserves praise.

SARAVANAN
ENGAEYUM EPPOTHUM
Can an accident appeal to you as an audience? Well, yes it can, if you are a certain Saravanan and have assisted A R Murugadoss for many years! The film, which marked the entry of a leading Hollywood studio in Tamil, was scripted in the multiple storylines format.

SHANTHA KUMAR
MOUNAGURU
After assisting director Dharani for quite a few years, you'd expect Shanthakumar to come up with some commercial fare. But no, he came up with a thriller that took everyone by surprise and gave Arulnidhi a big break in tinseltown. Thrilling times ahead of him, for sure!

ANIRUDH
3
OK, this guy certainly approaches his music with a certain 'kolaveri'! A song that became popular worldwide,
Kolaveri...
would have been a dream song for any debutant composer. With the other songs in 3 also getting lauded, this young composer is well on the way to becoming the toast of Kollywood.

Words of 2011

Sunayana Suresh

Everyone went "Ooh La La" over "Kolaveri Di", one of the unlikeliest buzzwords of the year. As 2011 draws to an end, here's a look at the words that defined the year in more ways than one.

KOLAVERI DI…

With the song being played across radio stations everywhere, even in the United States and Australia, and Dhanush and his team becoming international names, no Tamil song has received such immediate fame. With over two dozen parodies, remixes and spoofs of this song, there's no doubt that this one's a big winner.

2011 MEIN KYA BOLTI TU?

1. KOLAVERI DI… 2. SILK 3. FLASH MOB 4. DHONI 5. ANNA HAZARE 6. METALLICA 7. 3D 8. FACEPALM 9. CHAMMAK CHALLO 10. DK BOSE

SILK

Silk was one name that everyone sat up and took notice of. Vidya Balan's performance as the 80s sex siren upped her status as one of the most bankable performers in B'wood.

FLASH MOB

The year saw the youngsters across different cities stage well-choreographed and coordinated flash mobs.

DHONI

The Chennai Super Kings captain has become the most celebrated captain of his times. With him leading India to World Cup victory, the country couldn't have wished for anything more from him.

ANNA HAZARE

This is probably for the first time that the youth of the entire nation joined together to look up to one hero. And this wasn't any film star or a pop icon. Anna Hazare got them to join him in his fight against corruption and be a part of his crusade.

METALLICA

The gods of metal finally descended on Indian shores. But it wasn't an easy landing. Their first concert in Delhi was called off because of security concerns. Their Bangalore concert was a hit though.

3D

With some of the biggest franchises like "Harry Potter" opting to go 3D too, it's now become a norm. And India too saw some of its films like "RA.One" and "Don 2" get into 3D mode.

FACEPALM

The word means hitting your face with your palm. The year saw many 'facepalm' moments, including Shoaib Akhtar's controversial book, which the netizens ripped apart!

CHAMMAK CHALLO

What with Akon singing for SRK, this song remains one of the biggest hits on the dance floor even now. With Kareena sizzling in an uber sexy avatar in this song, everyone had their eyes hooked to the video as well. And the Tamil lyrics in the song were the proverbial cherry on the icing!

DK BOSE

Only Aamir Khan could have pulled this off. Using what could be a complete cuss word as lyrics of a song in his production and getting away with it is a feat not many can achieve. But, the fact remains "DK Bose" is one song that took the nation by storm.

They are newsmakers who've dazzled us through the year. Their every move has made headlines and they've only grown from strength-to-strength in the year gone by.

Even as 2011 draws to a close, these famous men and women are only set to soar after firmly establishing themselves as people to reckon with in the past year. We take a look at the brand value of some of the city's most popular headline grabbers.

Dhanush, actor
From Manmadha Rasa to Why this Kolaveri Di, Kollywood actor, Dhanush, couldn't have asked for more.

Dining with the Prime Minister and lunching with Ratan Tata, Dhanush is definitely in the top echelon of formidable Indian superstars. Brand Dhanush is now chartered for an unknown and unforeseen trajectory.

"My hard work has finally paid off," says the soft spoken actor. "I have received the national recognition that I deserve."

The actor does acknowledge the contribution of his beautiful wife, Aishwarya, to his newfound success. "I couldn't have done it without her," he admits sweetly. How will brand Dhanush fare in 2011? We wait to be surprised.

Meanwhile the Kolaveri number continues to grab accolades. After becoming the fastest rising music video of the year in India, Kolaveri Di is now CNN's top song of the year!

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY

As the year comes to a close, Chennai Times tracks the highs and lows of Kollywood during the year

M Suganth•

And finally (though it might seem trifle), from taking plots and tunes, the 'copycat' syndrome has now spread even to film posters, which makes us now ask —where has Kollywood's creativity gone?

2011 was largely a good year for the Tamil film industry in terms of awards and recognition, though the number of releases dipped marginally (142 against 149 in 2010). While collection figures of films remain shrouded in a cloud of secrecy due to reluctance on the part of producers and actors to reveal the exact figures, trade sources opine that the box office revenue too is below the previous year's. Here's a lowdown on K-Town's conquests and controversies this year…
THE GOOD

• Tamil films never had it so good when it came to recognition — the record haul of 12 National Awards certainly ranks as the year's peak. Internationally too, Tamil films grew in stature thanks to the younger crop of filmmakers, like Vetri Maaran, Sarkunam, Myskkin and Suseenthiran, who are coming up with films that were local in content but global in cinematic language. Not surprisingly, many of these films are being screened at global film fests. Thiagarajan Kumararaja's Aaranya Kaandam, even won at the South Asian International Film Festival.

• 2011 was also the year when Kollywood finally woke up to the potential of the Internet and started dabbling in viral marketing. While Kolaveri Di… is clearly the face of this new, net savvy Kollywood, the groundwork began with the trend of releasing singles and shooting promo videos. Many actors joined the social network bandwagon, promoting their films with a vengeance and interacting with their fans.

• The industry also discovered a new channel of revenue, thanks to the sudden craze for southbased content in Bollywood. Remake rights of Tamil films, which were earlier sold off at a pittance, now cost crores, bringing good cheer to producers.
THE BAD

• The Superstar's hospitalisation was the biggest scare of the year. While he has reportedly now returned to normalcy, the postponement of Rana (which he is compensating by making the motion-capture movie Kochadaiyan) did cause concern.

• In addition to a not-so-great performance at the BO, the industry suffered a double blow when the government decided to increase the entertainment tax. While the movie-going public was spared this burden (ticket rates remained the same), the move was certainly bad news for theatre owners who were already reeling under diminished footfalls.

• And finally, as is the case in every year, this year too, many films suffered due to the lack of proper release schedules. Around 55 films, which were censored between January and November, are still lying in the cans. The reasons range from lack of buyers to issues between the crew, to lack of adequate number of screens.
THE UGLY

• The Sona-S P Charan episode certainly was the lowest point this year for KTown. The truth behind the happenings at that ill-fated party will forever elude us, but it certainly showed that the industry does have an ugly side.

• Closely rivaling the incident is the increasing control that fringe political outfits have begun to exert on the industry. From threatening artists to protesting against films (Dam999 being the prime example) and disrupting shoots, these activists seemed to have only one agenda — gaining publicity at the cost of the films. The lack of unity between the various industry associations only made their task easier.

NATIONAL AWARDS This year was virtually a sweep by stars from the south at the prestigious National Awards. Aadukalam was clearly the standout of the lot as it fetched laurels for Dhanush, Vetri Maaran, Kishore, Dinesh. Also bagging the coveted award were Sabu Cyril, Vairamuthu, Thambi Ramaiah and Salim Kumar.

QUINTESSENTIALLY SOUTH
This year saw a host of films
from the south being remade in Bollywood. Suriya's Singam was remade with the same name, starring Ajay Devgn. Salman's Ready and Bodyguard were also a remake of south Indian films.

R RAJINIKANTH Post the phenomenal success of Endhiran, Superstar fell ill. From what seemed like a harmless stomach infection, his health deteriorated, much to the worry of his fans. After treatment in Singapore, he was back. With two big flicks ' Rana and Kochadaiyan ' in his kitty, his fans are waiting with bated breath to see the Superstar back in action

. U UNITED THEY STAR The year gone by perhaps saw the most number of multi-starrers, in Kollywood, at least. A host of films like
Mankatha, Avan Ivan, Vaanam, Veppam, Ko, Engaeyum Eppothum, Muaran, Poraali and Payanam among others released this year and going by the response of the audiences, it looks like the trend has been warmly welcomed.

V VIRAL 2011 gave new meaning to 'spreading like wild fire'. From Chennai to Chicago, Why This Kolaveri Di... hit a whopping total of 29,523,616 hits, as the world grooved to the addictive beats of Anirudh and the captivating voice of Dhanush. The CST flash mob, stirred up a frenzy as the video went viral. Chennai, Cochin, Delhi and Kolkata followed suit and flash mobs became instantly popular.

W WEDDINGS Two words: Royal wedding. When Kate Middleton married her Prince Charming, William, the whole world watched — thanks to a live broadcast. However, it wasn't just the Royal wedding that grabbed eyeballs. Down south, a bevy of stars tied the knot this year. Karthi, Prithviraj, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Selvaraghavan, Mamta and Allu Arjun are some of the celebrities to enter marital bliss

Y YO BOYS! When Dhanush happily sang song in the cult hit Why This Kolaveri Di' with "Yo Boys", (pronounced in local slang as yo baaays), little did he realize what a phenomenon the song or even just the word would become! Hugely popular among the younger 'it' crowd, 'yo boys' was surely one of the buzz words the year.

Z ZZZ... FILMS THAT PUT US TO SLEEP!
Snoozefest 2011! Sounds like a New Year party? Well yeah, its not. The year saw several films that favoured insomniacs around the city, making 2011 an epic snooze fest. Rajapattai, 180, Nadunisi Naaygal, Rowthiram and Vedi made the list for putting the most number of people to sleep.
