Thanks Indianforum for catching those 2 words "spoil" & "promotion". I, too, felt that Dakssh himself has some misconception about gays. Homosexuality is not something that can be promoted or that can spoil someone. I don't know about others but Dakssh I haven't expected this comment from you atleast.

I am not surprised he said or meant that, given all the social stigma associated with gays and supporters of gays. At this time in indian society, there are not that many public figures who want to be known as supporters or advocates of gays, even if they personally understand or accept, probably because they don't want to be blamed by society for "introducing" or "promoting" homosexuality into the indian culture, as if it didn't already exist. I remember in one of the flashbacks in the show, SSP on the phone says something like what is going on with today's youth, they are learning all the bad things from western cultures, now we have a man having an affair with a man. I am glad they showed this because there are many people who share the same view as this character and believe that it's something young people are learning from western cultures and thus getting "spoiled."

I was just glad to hear from Dakssh that he respects homosexuality and he supports equal rights for all, which not that many public figures dare to say. Understanding homosexuality but not being able to "promote" or publicly advocate sounded to me more like a political answer. Hopefully, with time, the stigma linked to homosexuality will go away, and the straight people who today are afraid to publicly support their gay friend or gay family member can proudly do so.

Dakssh,

This post is not meant to argue with you, but it is directed to all readers. I am close to your age, but we may have much younger people visiting this forum and reading this thread and I am really writing this for them.

I respect your opinion, although I still think your concern is baseless. Again, I will not ask you to clarify anything, as everyone is entitled to their opinions.

Achievement in this context implies a choice. Yes, being homosexual is not an achievement (nor is being heterosexual, as both are born that way!). But, it is an achievement for a gay person to come out, face the world full of hatred and discrimination, and fight for their rights. This is something they should be proud of and is the base for gay pride.

Let's say Person A and person B both realize they are gay, but

Person A, 1. constantly wonders why they were made this way and if they are religious see this as God's mistake, and 2. cope without doing anything about it, thus 3. not happy with life as they wish they were like the others or try to change themselves but fail to do so

Person B 1. accepts that this is the way they were born and that their life is going to be different than majority, sees this as adding to the diversity in this world rather than feeling like a misfit, and 2. comes out to society without fear of rejection or discrimination from others, and thus, 3. eventually happy because they are not living with fear, shame, and dissatisfaction.

Most young gay people will identify with person A and should aim to become person B or are transitioning to becoming person B, but unfortunately many remain stuck being person A even in their late adulthood and remain unhappy or decide to end their life at this stage. Life is a gift and is too short, be proud of who you are, things will get better soon!
