First of all, I disagree that Hemu reached the top 3 with virtually no home support. If you remember the regional breakdown of votes before Hema was eliminated, he got 20 lakh votes from South, about the same amount that Vinit got from his zone, North. The only difference is that Hema didn't attract enough votes from the other regions. He got even fewer votes than Debu when you consider their neutral regions. We saw how much publicity was done by his family in order to help Hema. But it didn't work. Maybe he just couldn't inspire India to vote for him. He has a great voice, but we can't call him the Voice of India, sorry.

Similarly, Sandeep may not be the best singer, but he was the man idolized the most by the people. Hence he deserved to be Indian Idol. And Qazi/Rooprekha may not be great singers, but people visualized them as the Fame Jodi - they were popular, and they made people like them. They got the votes because people wanted to see them sing together.

Let me stress that these reality contests aren't looking for the best singers. If that was the case, that decision would be made by experts. We're talking about public votes here, so it would actually be most popular or most liked or most wanted singer. For example, SRK is the most popular actor, but not the best, yet we still give SRK the respect he is due. Why not give the same respect to Debo, Sandeep, Abhijit Sawant, Qazi for their respective achievements?

A lot of people feel Hemachandra, Nihira, and Karunya were deserving winners. Well, not necessarily.

Yes, they are excellent singers, but simply being a good singer does not necessarily mean you are a deserving winner. A winner is defined as someone who wins - period.

You need to win the people's hearts, you need to win their votes, you need to inspire them to believe in you, move them to spend their money for you.

George Washington won the first ever Presidential elections held in the USA - was he a deserving president? No. He had no political acumen. He was a farmer who owned land and a few slaves, and he was a good army General. But he was not a person fit to head the executive branch of ths United States. Yet, no one doubts that he was a deserving winner. Why? Because he brought cheer to the people's hearts. He was the most instrumental in bringing them their freedom. And they repaid their faith in him with their support in giving him the highest job in the country.

Debojit did something along the same lines - he brought cheer to the lives of people who have litte in life to look forward to. He inspired poor people to save up their hard earned money and vote for him relentlessly. He touched a lot of hearts, and he was the reason for the happiness of a lot of people.

Most importantly, he served as a ray of hope for the people of Assam, who had been torn between whether to consider themselves a part of an ungrateful India (which gave it step-brotherly treatment), or to demand a separate state where they would have more rights and respect as a people. Seeing one of their own being given an opportinity to succeed in the mainstream Indian culture, they felt the future looked bright. If one of their own could be accepted by India, then it would make it a lot easier for the rest of them. They wanted to let people know that Assam was indeed a significant part of India. They wanted Assam's voice to be known as India's voice.

When Assam's 21st century history is written, Debojit's name would be very prominent in there. And that is why he is a deserving winner. He may not have been the best singer in the competition, but he was clearly the Voice of India.

arre bhai, dont all those demagogues, all those lousy politicians do the same thing? win people's hearts, make you believe in them? get you to vote for them? shld we call them "deserving" winners? deserving hain toh batao, will vote for them next time around😛

George Washington was one vote one person for a political position impacting the country on a large scale. I think some care should be taken in comparing it to a music competition.

Multiple voting system for a singing competition is a little different. But there i would say if it is about massive fanatic voting from a particular community based on regional support than I feel that is wrong.
Because even if the person is talented his win will be in vain and will not respected. Even though Debo deserved to be in the top 5 and his singing improved drastically from the beginning, not many people recognize this. The world is not this forum and if you look outside of it most people equate him to Qazi and Sandeep. They have been defamed after the win which is unfortunate.

So the other singers have garnered more critical recognition even though they did not win.

And most importantly a winner is one who wins makes sense if the rules are fair.. that wasnt true.. So lets not try believe in this adage of yours.. because u will see in the long run these winners are really losers.....Illusions dont remain forever... 😊

regarding his name in history sure.. they can make his statue... doesnt matter .. the south india worships rajnikant, Khusboo,... do they have any national standing... so yes he can be happy in assam.. by no measure will be even be close to becoming voice of india..... 😊

and how can one even begin to believe that adage? if there's one thing the demagogues throughout history have shown us, it is their cynical ability to manipulate people's emotions and get them to vote for them/ support them. hardly my definition of what it means to be a "deserving" winner. "deserving" to my mind has a connotation of "right". and "right" often means talented or competent or "upright".

as for the definition of winner, etc., yaar, when we use the phrase "deserving winner", it is somewhat fallacious to split it into two words. those words, taken together, mean more than the sum of two words. Example: we can certainly say that someone WOULD HAVE BEEN a "deserving winner" even if they lost. one's gotta understand the context (tense in this case) in which words are used. isolated words do not tell the entire picture 😊
