Part 30
Hearing her question the doctor nodded his head and said "Your husband's life is now in your hands. What you say to him should make him want to get well soon." He called the ward boy and asked him to get a wheel chair for Riddhima. A nurse came and disconnected the I V drip and with Suja's help made Riddhima sit up slowly. Next the nurse untied the urine bag which was tied to the underside of the bed and hung it on the wheel chair. Then slowly the two of them and with Prakash also lending a helping hand, made her sit on the wheel chair.
As Suja rolled the wheel chair, Riddhima's mind was still digesting the fact, that it was her athaan who had donated her his kidney. The doctor and Prakash followed with Priyam clinging on to her dad's hand. She didn't like this hospital one bit. Here everyone looked sad and was crying. And her amamma was sleeping the whole day long. She wished she could go back home soon.
As Suja took her amma into uncle's room and wheeled her close to his bed, Riddhima couldn't believe her eyes. He looked so weak and ill. She couldn't believe that it was the same man who had wished her luck just 2 nights ago, with an angelic smile on his face. He was mumbling something. When she went close enough she heard him say "Say that you forgive me Riddhima. Otherwise I won't be able to even die in peace." Hearing that, tears started running down her cheeks.
She looked up when she felt the doctor's hand on her shoulder. He gestured that she shouldn't cry, but talk to him. Then he indicated to the nurse as well as Suja and Prakash, that they should all move out. Riddhima didn't know when they all walked out, leaving her alone with her athaan. She quickly wiped her tears and thought about what she should say, to wake her athaan up. She gently put her hand on his cheek and he whispered "Riddhima, forgive me." The doctor had already said that she should positively and make him want to get better soon.
Though tears brimmed in her eyes she toughened her heart and said, "I won't ever forgive you if you don't fulfill my long standing wish, now at least. Athaan I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Yes, honestly, I had decided that when I go back to the village after my surgery, I would stay with you in the ground floor only as I may not be able to climb the stairs to my house. I want to cook your favourite food and take care of all your needs, as a wife should. Don't you also want the same? Tell me. If you don't open your eyes right now and answer my question, I shall assume that you do not want that."
The rambling had stopped but he hadn't opened his eyes still. So she continued "Don't you want to see how well I am? With the kidney you've given me I'm going to live till I'm hundred. Aren't you happy about it? But my long life would be of no use if you aren't there to share it with me. Athaan open your eyes and talk to me please."
She couldn't control her tears and speak to him cheerfully anymore. So she turned her chair around to wipe away her tears, when she heard a whisper which sounded like "Riddhima". At once she spun around and saw her athaan awake and smiling weakly at her. She quickly wheeled her chair towards him and held his hand. He gave it a squeeze. She immediately lifted his hand to her lips and kissed it, tears running down her eyes.
When she looked up at him, she saw tears running down his eyes too. "Did you really mean everything you just said?" he asked in barely audible whisper and she nodded happily. He closed his eyes as he couldn't keep them open any longer but he still had that smile on his face. Pulling her chair even closer to his bed, she bent a little and placed her head on his neck. He turned his head towards her and pressed his cheek to her forehead. Rivulets flowed down both their eyes.
The knock on the door, brought them back to the present. Riddhima straightened herself up, but the bending over had caused a strain. She involuntarily let out a gasp and Suja came running to her side. But before she could say anything, Armaan opened his eyes and looking towards her asked "Riddhima, are you ok?" "I'm fine athaan" she replied to reassure him. That brought a smile to everyone's face and they looked at one another.
The doctor came forward and holding Armaan's pulse enquired "How are you feeling Mr. Armaan?" Armaan looked perplexed at him and then looking around the room asked "where am I?" only then he had realized that he was at a different place.
Dr: You are in Apollo hospital, Armaan.
When that didn't seem to satisfy him he told him that Prakash had shifted him to this hospital.
"But how did you know?" Armaan tried to question. "We've a lot of time to talk about all that uncle. You only rest comfotably, now that you are in safe hands. Armaan nodded and gave a weak smile.
S: You scared us all uncle.
A: Why?
"You were delirious with fever Armaan," the doctor said as he shook the thermometer and placed it in his mouth. Then pulling it out and checking it said "Good the fever is going down. The medicine has started taking effect."
A: I'm sorry for troubling you all. Actually I didn't
"It's all ok uncle, we only want you to get well soon." Prakash interrupted him as he could see that uncle was finding it a strain even to talk.
Dr: take good rest Armaan. I'll see you after a few hours.
Then turning to Riddhima he said "You should also go to your ward and rest. You've had a major surgery only yesterday. I wouldn't have put you through this if I didn't feel it necessary and as you all can see, it has really worked."
"Can't she stay in this ward itself? There's another bed there." Armaan said pointing to the bed on the opposite side.
Dr: No Armaan, she might catch the infection from you. Would you want that?
A: No, no, of course not!
Dr: I took a risk and let her in here so that she could talk to you and get you awake, as we weren't able to do it by medicines. I wanted you to come out of the delirium and she has accomplished that.
Turning to Suja he said, "Take her to her ward please, I'll send the nurse to help you shift her onto the bed." Suja nodded and proceeded to take leave from uncle. The doctor turned to Prakash and asked "I hope you won't have a problem watching over the two patients now, since they are just two rooms away." Prakash shook the doctor's hand saying "Thanks a lot doctor." Then telling the others "I'll be back soon" he followed the doctor out.
Sitting on the bed beside Armaan and holding his hand Suja said "Thanks so much uncle. You've given my amma a new life. And by giving her a new life, you've given me back my life. Words cannot express my gratitude." Smiling up at her he said "One word can." When she looked at him questioningly, "Appa" he said.
When Suja still didn't seem to understand, he whispered "Your amma's husband?" at that moment it struck both the women what he meant and in no time tears were flowing from both their eyes. Suja bent her head on his hand that she was holding, as if she was making namaskar and cried "Thanks a million, appa." He put his free hand on her head trying to say something.
Seeing him short of breath Riddhima intervened saying "Appa and daughter can talk all you want when he is better. We should let him rest now." Suja got up and pulled her amma's chair towards her appa's bed so that they could say a nice goodbye and grabbing Priyam's hand, went out of the room.
"You never told me that grandpa was your appa." Priyam complaineded asked her mummy as they walked out of the room. "He is now" Suja replied. But Priyam was still baffled. She couldn't understand what was going on here.
They must have hardly left the room, when Riddhima once again moved close to her husband and holding his palm in both hers, kissed it and said "Get well soon. You don't look good laid up like that." He just smiled and nodded. Then unable to control her curiosity any more asked "Why didn't you tell me?" He sure understood what she was speaking about and asked another question to answer her. "Would you have allowed me if I had?" Now it was her turn to smile and shake her head.
He lifted her hand to his lips and kissing it said "Take care." Smiling at him through her tears she nodded and said "You too." She wanted to put her head on his shoulder yet again but the pain of the stitches wouldn't let her, so she just put the hand he was holding on his cheeks for some time.
When Suja went outside, she saw Prakash in deep discussion with the doctor, when the doctor left after a few minutes, Suja questioned her husband as to what they were talking about. He said that they hsd been discussing about uncle's condition.
S: He's out of danger now na?
P: He is. But the infection will take some time to be fully cured. Luckily he doesn't have diabetes or BP, so it will respond to medicines faster. We've to take utmost care that nothing like that happens to athai. So we need to keep them apart till uncle is cent percent ok.
S: You are absolutely right. But you know one good outcome of amma's illness? At last they seem to have bonded well. All these years that's the only thing she's been yearning for. For her athaan to accept her as his wife. Though she got him married to the girl he loved, her love for him never reduced one bit. I know it, though she never said so openly.
P: And now, by donating his kidney to her, mama has compensated for all the sacrifices she has made for him till date.
S: I only hope and pray both of them get well soon and are able to spend some happy times together in their remaining life.
"I'm sure we will, as we have such wonderful children like you." Hearing Riddhima's voice both of them turned around to see her wheel herself out of the room. Prakash went and took charge of the wheel chair and wheeled it to her room. A nurse was waiting to assist her to get back into her bed.
When she was settled on the bed Prakash said to her "take rest athai and don't worry about mama, I'll be with him." Holding his hand she said "had it not been for you I might never have known about athaan's selfless sacrifice. I've always thought of you as my son, rather than son-in-law, and today you've proved me right. Thank you so much mapillai."
P: What is this athai? In one breath you say I'm your son and in the next breath you say "thank you" as you would to a third person.
R: Why mapillai. Can't we say thanks to our near and dear ones? That's a misconception I feel. We shouldn't take any relationship for granted, however close they maybe to our heart. Because it's only when we take someone for granted that the relationship gets strained. Isn't God our father? Don't we thank him when he grants our wishes? Similarly, wouldn't a parent also like to hear their child say 'thank you' for everything they do for him/her?
P: ok athai. Point taken. Who can win an argument with a school Principal?
R: I may not remain that for long.
S: What do you mean?
P: Suja let athai rest. Don't start any discussion now. She has strained herself enough for one day. It's not even 48 hours since she's had a major surgery remember.
