Anupama back to Shah house , at Baa's feet !
Despite the argument the previous night, he'd dropped her at the airport the next morning. Although the silence had multiplied many folds and that had in-turn taken the animosity between them to new heights. They barely spoke with each other the rest of the week. At times, she felt they weren't even clear on what they were fighting for. If week long fights could give hangovers, then this was how it must feel: filled with unintelligible resentment, bloated ego, a cry to be understood and accepted just as they are without uttering a single word and a sadistic need to twist sentences in a way to disguise that same cry and need. She was all that and more when she'd landed in their NY home to discover that the men were leaving shortly to Las Vegas for Yash's bachelor's party.
In the long hours of the flight back home she'd forced herself to declare an entreaty and had decided to make up with him before the weekend was over. And to find him all gone for the only duration they could have been together was far from disappointing. She didn't believe it was a sudden plan that had come up after she'd boarded the flight on the other coast. If they didn't already have enough, now they had one more thing to butt heads about.
The hushed verbal sparring inside their bedroom had done it to him. With the number of people being ever curious about his glum mood the previous week had given him little luxury to go at her the way he'd wanted; leaving the only high point of the day being the bitter words that hadn't left his mouth. He left without so much as a bye to her and that had her determined not to seek him out for the rest of his trip.
Upon reaching sin city, his luck had left him entirely; a commodity that one most needed in the place he was sheltering for the night. He couldn't remember why he'd foolishly checked in his hand luggage - that had his change of party clothes - which was delayed at arrival. Yash and Rishabh went ahead to check in into their Bellagio suite as per the plan to leave behind a sulking Maan at the terminal to collect his baggage.
Even as the limo picked them up at the airport, Yash and Rishabh were quarter drunks. In the time they'd waited for the hotel shuttle to arrive, the trio had done two rounds of shots to lose the sharp holds of sanity on them. The light buzz had cast a bounce to their step as they settled into the limo. To add to the airy feeling that came from the tequila, Rishabh opened a vodka bottle from the mini-bar to have them floating in no time.
4 hrs later...
"Hey bro...are you sure we cannot go back to our...our...our..." Yash's head slumped on the bar counter as he continued to slur like a broken record.
"Suite?" Rishabh added.
"Exactly" Yash laughed with such exhilaration that it felt like Rishabh had given him a 'Eureka' moment.
"But...but, this is your party...and we haven't even got you a lap dance yet" Rishabh was joyous he was still making sense after the ridiculous amount of spirits he'd downed. Yash nodded in agreement and smiled like a gushing fool.
Rishabh thought he was swimming in alcohol and Yash imagined alcohol coursing his veins instead of the usual red life force. Maan hadn't joined them yet or did he mention not meeting them at all for the night, Rishabh wondered. He remembered Maan's first phone call from the airport informing him that it was going to take him longer to join them. There had been another call just an hour ago; however the remnants of the conversation that stuck to his incoherent mind didn't make sense. He decided to talk his way through with Yash, to decipher the trace words that did tried to elicit from his memory.
"Does Cannnyyyon mean something to you?" Rishabh asked. "I think Maan said that...no doubt" He said contradicting his words with uncertainty and sureness, while he shook his head in deep understanding.
"Canyon?" Yash tapped his nose with his index finger over dramatically and responded "Did he say canyon? Or Candy? Candice?...Only those words fit Vegas...Are you sure?"
Rishabh confirmed that it was Canyon, but the affirming left Yash with a head ache trying to rack his brains for a connection. When nothing materialized in their muddled senses they left to an infamous Gentleman's club only to find themselves dis-interested in the half naked women swinging from the poles. They still hadn't lost their attraction for the drinks that passed around and so they nursed their drunkenness to drive themselves into a mindless state.
Perhaps it was a Candy or a Candice that had come down from the stage, but later they would call her Pandora for little did they know she was nothing but a can of worms.
"Howdy cowboy" She drawled with a southern accent, running a shaped pointy nail down Rishabh's chest "Care to take me for a ride" He'd never heard an innuendo that seemed plain wrong at so many levels and that made him smile.
"Wrong mustang sweet heart" He took her finger and placed it on Yash's shoulder and barely managed to wink at Yash.
"No...thanks" Yash said with a goofy smile and shirked her finger off.
The dancer was terribly upset from the image of the big tips - that she'd imagined while she'd made her way to the only loaded not-fake Armani's she'd sighted in the lounge - wither away.
"Are you guys gay or something?" She asked with her hands splayed on her bare waist.
"Who you calling gay sweetheart?" Rishabh retorted, swigging the last of the drink from his glass.
"Looks like you cowboys need a little something extra to that drink to make your night interesting" She whistled at the bartender, ignoring the semi-naked serving girl who just passed by.
The men didn't deny the special order drinks that came up and smiled silly at Candy - or Candice, whatever her name was - before they drained their shots. She took a shot herself and sat on Yash's lap. This time he didn't object as his head swirled in a strange grip of euphoria, he hadn't felt minutes ago. The stray lasers that happened to catch their eyes pierced them and their heightened senses complimented the fizz that they already felt inside them. Darkness ensued and after a flash heaven came down to earth.
4 hrs later...
"Oh! god...you think we left him back at the bar?" The words slipped Rishabh's tongue smooth as the wine he'd just sipped. His stomach had every kind of liquor that there was to be found on the cabinet of a well-stocked bar.
"Don't tell me..." Yash wiggled his head to clear himself "We lost him like the movie...That movie...Hangover. I hope we don't have a tiger in the bathroom"
"Or a baby..." Rishabh ended for him and their faces streaked with horror.
They flew all over the place, running around stumbling along the way, searching for a baby or a tiger when in all reality they only wanted to find Maan.
Convinced they didn't have the scary animal or baby, their mind disbelievingly came back to Maan again. "Do you think we should call Candy?" Yash said as a hiccup threw him to the ground.
"No...we should call Mike Tyson...I'm positive we left Maan with him..." Rishabh responded.
"Don't you think this is so cool just like the movie?" Yash broke into a stomach hurting laughter for nothing and then the possibility of it being true, enthused him further and he was rolling on the ground. "It really is happening...we have managed to lose Maan" He said, like that was the best thing ever.
Rishabh started crying out of nowhere "You know...I think I always liked him...even when he threw me out of the house, the one time he caught me with Naini...I can't believe we dropped him off someplace"
"Hey don't cry bro...he might be hiding under the bed, for all we know" And Yash crawled on the floor to look under the bed.
"I think we should call home...we should not keep the women waiting until the last minute like those fools in the movie did" Rishabh trilled and wiping his fake tears, he pulled his cell phone to do the unthinkable.
10 hrs later...
Rishabh woke up with his head feeling like a tomb; his brain was going to be dead soon from the pounding that he heard in his eyes. Slowly the words began taking its path up his ear canal and the voice induced an unknown dread inside him; like he'd done something terribly wrong.
"Wake up Rishabh...we are going to miss the flight"
Oh!, his mind caught up with the sense of urgency and he stood up in a jerk only to fall back onto the bed with a piercing ache.
"I don't care if you are not dressed...the flight is leaving in less than an hour" Maan yelled.
So Maan was in the room? Rishabh wiggled his head and rubbed his eyes to clear the blur from the images in his head. It was indeed Maan. Rishabh yawned and got to his feet, holding his head carefully, as if it was going to fall off his neck. Yash wasn't too far behind and Maan had to throw a bucket of ice at him to knock the fellow off the bed.
With only enough time to dump their clothes in their bags and to finish brushing their teeth, they hadn't cared to ask how they had made it back to their suite. Maan rushed and bullied the other two men like they were kindergarten kids into running through the lobby and at the airport walkway to get to their departure gates. Only after falling into their first class seats and the seat belt indicator went off did Maan decide to speak. And his first move was to whack Rishabh in the head.
"What the hell did you guys drink at the bar?" He asked and Rishabh blinked. By now he was clear they'd been tricked into taking more than alcohol. How else could he explain the fact that he didn't remember one thing from last night?
"I think it was a mistake taking that drink from...What was her name?" Rishabh scratched his head and Yash came to his rescue.
"I think it was candy" And he soon left out a yelp when Maan smacked his head too.
"Wow! What was that for?" Yash seemed annoyed that Maan kept jolting their already throbbing heads when he'd no clue if they truly deserved it.
"That was for gambling away thousands and for that stupid girl you guys hired to keep you company for the night" The two men jumped from their seats upon hearing Maan's response; their shock not so much for the money lost as it was for the escort they'd taken.
"I hope...we didn't...Ok you are killing me here" Rishabh croaked, his words strangling his neck.
"And you actually think you would wake up to see another day had you done anything of the sorts" Maan's tone did a good job of conveying the threat to last a life time. Rishabh instantly went limp in the seat and closed his eyes, breathing a sigh of relief, although Yash panicked.
"Then it was me wasn't it?...I..." Maan cut him off instantly before his scandalous imagination took over.
"No...The limo driver had the good sense to bring you back to the hotel before that. But you credit card was toast by then" He said and went on putting the pieces of the puzzle back for them. Yash relaxed too once he reckoned that the mislaid money was a small price to pay for the dangers avoided.
"I called you the second time to tell you guys I was not joining for the evening and was leaving to the Canyon" Maan added. Rishabh recollected vaguely having talked about it to Yash. He didn't feel like straining his head and so he let Maan speak without an interruption to boast off his memory spur.
"Erhm! I wasn't up to a night of clubbing...And don't ask anything more or what changed after landing here" He said quickly, before Yash or Rishabh could embarrass themselves by asking a personal question that he would by no means answer.
"The only good thing about yesterday is that you guys let the driver gamble with you and that girl, which turned him grateful for making his night...and that made him keep you guys from being looted by..." He dragged the last word to draw on their anticipation "...god knows whom or what.." he ended in an anti-climactic tone.
"When did you come back to the hotel?" Yash asked, unable to help himself.
"Um!" Maan hesitated with guilt washing over his face "I only came back in time to wake you guys up...I ended up driving all night and lost cell reception for most part" Maan said. Something inside him felt heavy even after pondering over the same subject for over a day. He thought running to the Canyons just like the last time he'd done, would give him the much needed answers. This time too the alone time had come to his rescue; however he didn't like the choices he had now come up with. Alas! If only things had been differently...he sighed at the predicament he was in. He refused to dwell on it any longer and shifted his attention to the two men laboring to figure out the rest of the night that was still a mystery to them.
"I'm only glad you guys didn't end up like those hangover guys and losing someone..." Maan said and broke into a laugh. Rishabh and Yash joined him, but the same eerie feeling reared its head again and Rishabh gradually lost the smile on his face. In moments Yash was gravely serious as well, which didn't bode well with Maan.
"What happened?" Maan asked.
"Why do I have this feeling we talked about that Hangover movie last night? And something about phone..." Yash didn't dare finish.
"Oh! shit" Rishabh slapped his forehead the same instant as realization dawned on him. "I think there might be a problem Maan..." Maan looked from Rishabh to Yash and then back to Rishabh as he leaned in to grasp the dire situation they were talking about.
"We might have made some calls to the women folk in NY..." Yash said, wincing at what might Maan's reaction be once he learnt the whole truth.
"When we came back to the suite, we remembered zilch about your second call and we thought we lost you...And after the call I think we dozed off..." Rishabh said, swallowing down the bile that rose to his throat.
"Shit.. Don't tell me..." That was all Maan could manage as his suddenly gone numb mind worked at the consequences of the stupidity that the men had displayed. He prayed that the calls had merely been conjured in their heads by the delirious drug in their system. No...he couldn't handle any more confrontation with anyone. Perhaps they'd talked about the movie and the distant memory was forcing them to fabricate a fact out of the instance. He made them switch on their cell phones and check the call logs. He shouldn't have and he was now going to spend the rest of the journey back home in stomach wrenching anxiety for he soon found out he was doomed. They saw two calls from Rishabh's cell phone and one from Yash, all closely following each other around the time they'd claimed. Unable to retrieve the voice mails on his cellphone owing to being on-air, he cursed his ill luck. His crashing day dampened more when the stewardess refused him from using the emergency phone owing to the turbulence that had just started. Shit! He cussed again. What exactly was Geet going through?
