Spotted!

Iqbal shows-off his fiancee at a suburban hotel

Angad of Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hai aka Iqbal Khan was spotted recently at a leading hotel, having a cozy dinner with fiancee Sneha Chabra. Apparently, the actor wanted to surprise his fiance. "I was quite surprised myself that I could pack up early from my shoot and decided to make the most of it," says Iqbal.

The intensely private Iqbal intends to cut down on work after he ties the knot next year. "After getting married, I don't want to live on the sets every day and night, like I do now. I would want to spend maximum time with her," says the soon-to-be-married actor.

Eijaz Khan

Kavya returns to Kavyanjali

Eijaz Khan doesn't know it yet, but he will come back as a different character

Reena Thapar Kapoor

Actors exiting shows, only to make a comeback later has become a regular feature in serials. From Smriti Irani's comeback (after her pregnancy) in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi to Saakshi Tanwar's re-entry in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki and Amar Upadhayay a.k.a Mihir Virani's in Kyunki..., it is now time for Eijaz Khan to come back to Kavyanjali. However, he will play a completely new character, and not Kavya, the character he initially played.

Even if Khan's character was bumped off a couple of weeks ago, the actor occasionally shot for flashback scenes. But by and large, his role had come to an end.

So brought about Kavya's resurrection? "Eijaz is coming back to the show. We planned this a long time ago, even before his character died," says Ekta Kapoor. "Now that Anjali has consented to marry Shaurya, we needed a twist. It's a daily show and I've to keep the show and the public interest going. He'll play a foreign-returned business tycoon, who comes to India."

What are Khan's sentiments about returning back to the show? "I've been extremely busy with Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka," he says. "In fact, we are leaving for Malaysia tonight. As of now, Ekta hasn't mentioned this comeback to me. I have to admit that I did get a whiff of some kind of return, but was unsure about it. I'm working for Balaji, what show I shoot for doesn't matter. I'll start shooting for Kavyanjali when Ekta wants me to. I'm at Ekta's disposal."

How different will the new character be? "If Ekta has something definite chalked out in her mind, I'll go with it. I'll make sure that I give my best to the role," he says.

* I'll start shooting for Kavyanjali when Ekta wants me to. I'm at Ekta's disposal — Eijaz

Ekta bows to Iqbal's wishes

Ekta Kapoor has cast the hunky star of her TV serial 'Kaisa Yeh Pyar Hai', Iqbal Khan in 'Kkavyanjali' after bumping off the popular lead character Kkavya played by Eijaz Khan.

After Iqbal refused to age in her 'Kaisa...', she has even dropped the idea of a generation leap in the serial. The charismatic Khan somehow manages to have his way with women. The heartthrob of millions of serial viewing Indian women has no time to enjoy this adulation as he works for 16 hours every day. He talks to us about his work, his fans and his roots.

How does it feel to be the poster boy of TV?
I still don't believe it somehow. I have to pinch myself to believe it. It is a good feeling. Anybody will feel nice. I'll be lying if I say that 'Oh it is alright'. It feels great to be admired like that.

According to some reports, your fans are stalking you...
I think that is a package deal. In our profession it is pretty normal to have such fans too. As long as they don't attack you with guns and knives it is fine.

How has Ekta reacted to your refusal to age in her serial? She is pretty ok about it. We have dropped the generation leap and the graying part. Now we are taking a 4 year leap only.

You managed to have your way?
Yeah!(laughs)

Kkavyanjali TRPs are falling, is that why you have been introduced in the serial?
You can't get someone on the show thinking the TRPs will go high. Balaji's shows run because of the name Balaji, you don't have to put an Iqbal Khan on the show to get better TRPs. That will not make a difference. It all depends on the story. No matter who is on the show, if the story is not good, it is not going to work. Even Karishma Kapoor and Raveena Tandon have done shows and they are brilliant actors, but unfortunately things didn't work out.

How is it working in 'Kkavyanjali' after a long stint in 'Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hai'?
For an actor, the best part is that when you get to play something else, you play something different it is good. I have been lucky in this case because Angad's character keeps changing every 3 months in 'Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hai'. Sometimes he is a bad boy, sometimes a flirt...so it is all good. In 'Kahin To Hoga' I did a tapori and now I am in Kkavyanjali doing a totally different character, so it is great.

You are doing two daily serials. Isn't that too much work pressure?
It is cool. My body has got used to it now. I don't feel faint anymore. See I have certain plans for myself and I am not married yet so I can do this.

There is a sudden spurt of talent in the entertainment world from Kashmir. Do you think your success could be inspiring youth there?
Kashmir has remained closed up or cut-off for a long time. Now that people are coming out and working here it must definitely be giving hope to people there. It is a good thing. I remember when I did my first music video and I had to pick up the girl in the video in the end, a neighbor in Srinagar went tut-tut ting to my mother about a Kashmiri boy picking up girls like that on TV. Now when I go there they say you are doing great work because their sons are also coming out now.

Do you miss Kashmir? How often do you go there?
Of course I do... its home. I go there whenever I get time. Last time I went after two years. The time before this I had gone for a week. That time it was really bad, that is the worst time of Kashmir I have ever seen. But this time I saw a lot of change, a lot of tourist. I saw a lot of people there and it gave me a feeling that things are getting back to normal.

Do you feel scared for your family there?
I have lived in Kashmir during a phase when the militancy was at its peak. I was a kid, so I have seen that phase. So as compared to that I feel safer. I want them to come here but when they come here even in January they say it is very hot.

We have been hearing about your marriage plans for a long time. Are you too busy to get married right now?
I am not. When my parents tell me to get married I will do that. They know the girl, they have seen her and probably, Inshallah, next year I will get married. Right now I have some plans for myself and my family. I want to fulfill them.

Protesters march to Balaji House against K serials

Balaji Telefilms is at the receiving end again. Foetus-sex determination, marital rape and now the increasing incidence of extramarital relationships in Balaji's famous K soaps.

Slogans and placards marked the protest march in the lane outside Balaji House

A protest group, comprising different social organisations, led by Mumbai based Jain outfit Vriti Vrund, marched to the Balaji Telefilms headquarters in Andheri, suburban Mumbai on Thursday afternoon, insisting that Ekta Kapoor tone down her soaps to suit citizens' sensibilities. Over 100 women congregated outside Balaji House, waving placards and shouting slogans that decried the 'anti-cultural' note of Ekta's soaps.

The protesters, who are regular audiences of the K serials, said that while they have always been against the stand taken by these serials on various social issues, it was the mercy killing epiosode on Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi that proved to be the proverbial straw that broke their complacency.

Only a select few leaders of the march were finally let into Balaji House for talks

"These soaps are giving audiences options of an easy way out, and setting a bad example for our children by showing that mercy killing is an acceptable alternative," said Alpa Chedda, the leader of the march. Chedda also cited examples of extra marital affairs on shows like Kyunki.... and Kasautii Zindagi Kay, which she said are a bad influence on children.

"My four year old son has been asking me why I don't have two fathers, like the kids on Kyunki...?" simmers Sangeeta Ajmera, one of the protesters, who braved the sweltering Mumbai heat to stand outside the Balaji House for hours. Till the time of posting, no Balaji official had deigned to meet the protesters.

Over 100 women braved the summer heat to protest against the K serials

Such protests are however not new to Ekta Kapoor. In December 2004, the Republican Party of India (RPI) Ramdas Athawale faction held demonstrations outside Star India's office in Mumbai. The RPI activists were protesting what they termed an "insult to the Indian Constitution" (and by extension to Dalit icon and the man who penned this holy grail the late Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar) in an episode of Kyunki... which aired on 22 December. During this episode, Tulsi decried the fact that the Indian Constitution is ambiguous on the issue of marital rape.

Earlier, in 2002, enraged women's groups had registered a strong protest against a scene in Kyunki... which showed a pregnant woman undergoing a sex determination test. A few months later, another organisation Jagori, protested a scene in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, saying it showed a rapist unrepentantly justifying his action of raping a blind girl, Khushi. It apparently also showed the husband convincing his wife that the rape was committed not out of lust or desire for Khushi but out of a need to punish her for misbehaving'' and not respecting him enough.

How will Ekta Kapoor defend her serials this time? For a long time, none of the K soaps have generated much controversy, and ratings have more or less plateaued. Will this protest march only help in doing what it ostensibly doesn't set out to do - increase interest in the K serials?

never had a fallout with Ekta Kapoor"

Sandeep Baswana was last in news when he quit Kyunki...and Kkoi Dil Mein Hai..and he made headlines recently when he resumed work as 'Saahil' on the Star Plus primetime show. Here he bares his heart out to Prashant Golecha clarifying there was never a fallout between him and Ekta.

On himself and his career journey
I am a simple person who leads a simple life. I was born in Haryana and I have been brought up in North India. I came to Bombay with the ambition to become a director. I did few ad campaigns for products like Kwality walls, L.G. colour TV, Britannia Chai biscuit and that boosted my confidence. Then I thought of using acting as a platform for the same. I have been in Bombay since last six years. I started my acting career with Balaji show Kuchh Jhuki Si Palkein for Sony followed by Kamal and Kyunki saas bhi Kabhi Bahu thi.

On leaving Kyunki.. and Koi Dil Mein Hain
After working for three and a half years on television I was exhausted. I was shooting for Kyunki… and Koi Dil Mein hain simultaneously. I worked in Koi Dil Mein hai for nearly ten months. I had a little problem with executive producer at that time. I was shooting day and night. I was the main lead in Koi Dil mein hai. It wasn't professional on my part to leave the shows but I needed the break. I wasn't also physically well as I had a muscle spasm problem. I didn't have any fall out with Ekta Kapoor.

On being back in Balaji and Kkavyanjali
I was approached to play 'Shloak' in Kaavyanjali and I agreed. I am the only real son of Amrita Singh playing Nitya in the show. Balaji had a problem with the guy who was playing "Saahil" so I was roped in back.

On being Saahil again
I had played Saahil for two years previously so I knew my character. The Kyunki star cast is very professional. All are talented. Atmosphere is buddy buddy types. There are only three male character Karan, Gomzi and Mihir besides mine. I relate to Sahil of present times more than the one I played previously. Saahil now is very human. For him to err is human. The drama and intensity in the character makes it special. Few characters have died and few new have come.

Fitness Mantra
I don't have time to go to gym. I do skipping. I do stretching and push-ups when I get time. I drink a lot of milk at least two litres a day and like a typical North Indian love desi ghee and ghar ka Khanna. I am more of a vegetarian. At home non-veg is not cooked.

Personal life
I am single but not ready to mingle. There is no time for personal life. I am absolutely focused on work. At this stage my professional life is my personal life. I am working day and night.

Friends in the industry
Shabir Ahluwalia who has worked with me in Kyunki...for some time is the only family I have in Bombay. He is like my brother.

On Astrology and Numerology
They are entertaining to me. I live one day at a time and don't follow anything.

On Balaji Telefilms and Ekta Kapoor
After films Balaji production house is the best. For actors it is a paradise. Actors are paid on time and are pampered. I have a professional relationship with Ekta Kapoor. I keep bumping her into parties. Ekta is accessible if I need I can call her up. She sometimes visits sets also.

Best and worst thing about entertainment industry
Best thing is work is entertainment and it pays well. The worst thing is mediocrity, which needs t obe worked upon.

Future Plans
I want to direct films. Initially I don't intend to act in the films I make. I am very clear about my ambitions.

At Ekta's private dinner party...
By: Vickey Lalwani
May 18, 2006

Sandiip Sikcand and Nisha Sareen
Invitees to Ekta Kapoor's private dinner party at her residence on Saturday were witness to hi-voltage drama, when a furious Sandiip Sikcand (creative head of Kavyanjali, K Street Pali hill, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii and Kasamh Se) told actress Nisha Sareen (Disha of Kavyanjali, Dweep of K Street) to "f*** off! Mind your own business."

Heads turned and jaws dropped, because the outburst was unlike Sikcand. Nisha was flabbergasted, and slowly walked away.

Sikcand was reluctant to talk about the incident. "I don't know whether you know this, but Nisha and I were buddies. Today, things are not the same," he lamented.

Friend turned foe

Sandiip and Nisha go back a long way. He had even cast her in his play, My Best Friend's Wedding.

So what went wrong? When and how did the equation break up? Things soured between the two when Sikcand did not attend the premiere of Nisha's play, Birdsong, on April 8, at St Andrew's auditorium — and Nisha lost her cool.

Explained Sikcand, "I had a genuine reason for not attending that show. I was too busy at the office that day. I keep my personal and professional life totally separate. Without understanding my problem, Nisha yelled at me and said something very terrible after the premiere.

She called, and said, 'When you are 80 and alone, your Balaji and work will not come to your rescue. You will need friends like me.' She also said many other uncomplimentary things, which are so pathetic that I don't want to get into the details."

After that incident, Sandiip and Nisha did not interact the way they used to. Nisha sent him feelers and tried to patch up, but Sikcand did not relent.

"Once I am put off by somebody, I just can't be the same again. That's me," he said. So what happened at Ekta's house? "Nisha tried to get close to me. She put her arm around me. I didn't like it at all, and reacted," he admitted.

'I'm in awe of him'

Nisha is disturbed at what happened between Sikcand and her. "I did say a few harsh things to Sandiip, in the heat of the moment.

Frankly, I'm in awe of him. Sandiip and I have travelled together a lot and shared some very good moments. I know he felt very bad about my behaviour on the phone, but he should understand that I got carried away because the Birdsong premiere was a very important occasion for me, and I badly wanted him to be there.

He got p***** off at Ekta's party when I tried to mend bridges between us. But that's okay, he'll come around."

"I hold Nisha's acting abilities in high esteem. I wish she was as great a friend as she is an actor," Sikcand concluded.

Asides…

Sikcand's acting front is taking off, too. He has signed Mahesh Bhatt's Woh Lamhe. Sandiip refuses to divulge the details of his role, except that it's a kick-ass character.

In Birdsong, Nisha plays an upwardly mobile lawyer, who meets a travel writer, Abhay Shrivastava (Siddharth Kannan), who helps set the caged bird within her free.

Ekta's boys party hard in Mauritius
By: Upala KBR
May 31, 2006

BAND BAJA DI, BOYS!
(L-R) Eijaz Khan, Shabbir Ahluwalia and Sanjit Bedi
When Ekta Kapoor flew the cast and crew of Kya Hoga Nimmo Ka to Mauritius last week, she thought it would be all work, and no play — but the boys in the cast thought otherwise, and partied hard on the outdoor.

Tashu ruined it

"Yes, it's true that Eijaz (Khan), Shabbir (Ahluwalia) and Sanjit (Bedi) had an all-guys party last Sunday," said Ekta. "In fact, the three of them, Tashu (Natassha) and I partied together till 1 am, but I went back to my hotel, as I was feeling tired.

Then the boys wanted to go out on their own, on a boys' night out, but Tashu insisted on going with them, so their night was ruined. Tashu didn't understand that they wanted to be alone. They partied till 8 the next morning, and Eijaz went straight to the shoot from there."

PARTY POOPER: Natassha

Says Shabbir, "Eijaz and I have known each other for a long time, so when we met up in Mauritius, Sanjit, Eijaz and I decided to party together. It was an impromptu decision." But doesn't Eijaz hate the sight of Shabbir and Sanjit? "That's not true at all. Eijaz and I are great pals," refutes Shabbir.

So where was the party held? "We had dinner and went to The Beach House nightclub, at the Grand Bay. It's a hotel on the beach, with singing, dancing and karaoke. The party broke off at about 6 am. We even danced on the beach," laughs the actor.

Beached spirits

They must have been pretty drunk to do that. "Yes, the spirits were high that night. We had a blast!" laughs Shabbir. But what was he doing in Mauritius? "I have a guest appearance in Nimmo, and was shooting for that."

Adds Kapoor, "Both Tashu and Shabbir have guest appearances in Nimmo."
