Do you think it is good for women to be obsessed with society-conciousness? Look at Devyani, she would rather stay with her molesting/cheating husband than to hear other people gossip about it. She would rather let vidya live with a man who can never love her than to hear other people say bad things.

Everybody gossips in this world, doesnt matter how good or a bad person you are. Then why does having a good reputation become so important?

Ok, this may be a bit boring, but since I think it is a good question it deserves a serious discussion. To answer this question one needs to look at the notion of the 'normative'.

The term means that state, through society, upholds one way of living as good ('normal') and another way of living as bad('abnormal'). Moreover, these notions of 'good' and 'bad' are tied to the construct of gender. Certain ways of being are specified by state/society so that a divide-and-rule policy can work (just like the British divided and ruled India!). Divide-and-rule requires that one section of the population must be shown to be better than the other. In a patriarchal society, such as the one we live in, men are taught that they are better than women. If you are taught this for centuries you start believing it. So, certain dangerous notions are drilled into us as "natural" or "normal." You are so completely indoctrinated by this notion of "natural" inequality that you start not only perpetuating that inequality in your own life but also try to ensure it in the lives of others. So, for those totally indoctrinated in patriarchal notions, such as Devyani, it is 'normal' for a woman to suffer in silence, to pretend that all is well, because if she doesn't then society would regard her as 'abnormal'! It is this fear of being declared abnormal and therefore being ostracised that makes people like Devyani behave the way they do. Priya is being 'abnormal' (I'm so proud of her!) at huge risk. She is refusing to follow rules laid down by patriarchy. I'm sure, when/if she comes to know about Gaurav's homosexuality she will stay true to her principles and support him 100% while criticising Devyani for forcing Gaurav to marry.

There are women like Devyani who will suffer in silence for the sake of society. Devyani has been doing it for too long now to break the mould.
And not just society she has also been showing her life as perfect, especially her husband to her family for which the consequences can be disastrous.
Firstly to her sister who thinks her jijaji to be the perfect husband material. If Uttara even knew a bit about his infidelity she would be cautious of him and stay away. We know what extent SSP can go to get what he wants and we can only imagine what exactly he will do.
And secondly Aditya, who worships the ground his dad walks on. By not knowing what his dads really like it is going to break his relationship with Priya when he finds out the truth.
Even after finding out what SSP did to Priya, Devyani still doesnt want the family or anyone else to know even though she knows its wrong. Devyani is the sort of person who will deny everything even when it all comes out in the open. And she wants Vidya and Priya to do the same.
There are women who will even listen to taunts by their in laws but never have the guts to say or do anything because they've been brought up that way. That its wrong. And when you've been doing it for too long it becomes normal as Aichu says. And if you do speak up your categorised as being rude and not brought up well.
I think the CVs are doing a marvellous job with Devyanis character. They're showing a real woman.

OMG thanks for talking about this...even I see it...esp after taking gender classes, I feel like everything is socially constructed.
