I don't think neither I nor anybody has the right to comment on how many films Ismail Durbarji has. Nobody is feeding us. We are not at anybody's mercy

Debojit Saha who was adjudged as the country's choice in the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005 has released his self-titled album with music by Biddu. Understandably, the singer from Assam is happy to be singing his own songs. Ask him why he didn't have his mentor Ismail Durbar composing for his debut album and he says, "I'd have definitely loved it and since my winning the challenge was a matter of pride for Ismailji's gharana and having worked under him for so many months, it was obvious that he should have composed the music for my album. But I think certain things didn't work out. Though the album has one song by Ismailji which he had composed for my finals and which I had sung then plus there are two remixes of 'Ek haseena thi' and 'O humdum suniyo re' which I had sung during the competition." Debojit says he is happy that "Bidduji composed my songs because he had once come on the Sa Re Ga Ma show and had appreciated a regional song I had sung then. So when the chance to work with him came along, I was only glad." Ask him how he feels when people say that since his mentor Durbar himself doesn't have any films to compose for, then how would he get a chance to sing and Debojit doesn't take it too kindly. "I think it's really sad how people say such things. I don't think I or for that matter anybody has the right to comment on how many films Ismailji has. It's not my lookout to know about that. Besides, who gives these people the right to say anything about him or me because we are not at anybody's mercy? Nobody is feeding us. All said and done, Ismailji's guided me this far, and from now onwards, I should be getting work on my own merit and not expect him to get it for me." Interestingly, Debojit has already recorded "half a song" with his rival Vineet for the latter's mentor Himesh Reshammiya. "We couldn't finish recording the song. I have also sung for Bappi Lahiri for a film called Cabaret and talks are on to record for Pritam for a Mukesh Bhatt film." Ever since he won the Challenge after several highs and lows, Debojit says he's been travelling abroad and to his home-town for music shows. "It was heartening to perform at the Zee Cine Awards at Mauritius and stars who I have only admired and dreamt of meeting were actually congratulating me on my success. They knew who Debojit was. Recently I also performed on the 'Heat' concert with Saif Ali Khan and Sushmita Sen and they both complimented me on my singing. All that praise and appreciation from stars like Neetu Singhji, Rekhaji, Karan Johar definitely makes me happy." Finally, is his wife, Bandana who has been his strong support, happy? "Yes, she is. I want her to be by my side always. We will be going next month to the US, UK and Canada where I will have about 25 to 30 shows over 50 days." So happy times seem to have just begun for the Sahas.
