25-year drinking age: Imran Khan to file PIL

MUMBAI: Actor Imran Khan has taken on the state government for raising the drinking age to 25. The actor plans to file a public interest litigation against the new regulation.

Imran told TOI on Tuesday, "I am really disturbed by the state's perception that the youth of today are a bunch of idiots. I am working with my legal team and plan to draft a petition," he said. Imran said he was voicing the opinion of a majority of youth who find this regulation "regressive".

The actor said that more than 60% of the population is below 25. "When one gets the right to vote at 18 and elect a government and even marry and have children at the age 21, to ban drinking for people below the age of 25 is ridiculous,'' said Khan.

While the actor personally does not endorse drinking, he said, "I feel everyone has the right to choose and that is the reason why I have decided to take this step. I don't think it should be imposed upon the youth. This kind of regulation is bound to turn the youth into outlaws.''

"The issue is a raging debate on all social networking sites and most of the youth feel that it is unfair. Its completely unfair to expect that one has to wait till one is 25 to exercise the freedom of choice regarding one's lifestyle."

Khan said that young India is not as irresponsible as the older establishment assumes it to be. "They cannot be taken for granted."

this can't be serious... must be a false story by media cuz if not then 😲 alcohol isn't necessary...who cares about alcohol...can't this spoilt rich horrible actor fight for other things? like equal rights for the untouchables?

I think rather than creating a PIL for lowering the drinking age he should be working on trying to change the legal system in India where drunk driver who kill people are let off without facing any consequences. If India had severe penalty for drinking and driving like here in Canada then I can understand his arguments but since it doesn't I think he should really think before filling his PIL .

He's learning from the perfectionist, AKA AAMIR KHAN! this is disgusting. I know aamir pretty well and his strategies using politics for his own gain. A lot of people like drinking, but not a lot of people are responsible while drinking. just look at your buddy- Salman Khan. This is going to give more negative and positive reaction towards his upcoming films. I'm seriously tired of these Khans making a mockery out of the Indian judicial system. Its a damn joke, to be using politics for earning revenues. this makes me super angry.

I don't know if this is the best career move but i completley understand why this is a fairly valid legal issue to fight about. What do you guys mean focus on banning drinking across the country? The point of a free country is to be able to do most things with reasonable limits. A 25 year old age ban on drinking is ridiculous, especially when 21 is the legal marriage age and 18 is the age to vote.

Why do we take everything to extreme. So many people below the age of 25 drink, but dont go about creating a rampage.

I started drinking at the age of 22, and guess what I never ever drove or drive under the influence of alcohol.

For many people consuming alcohol is a part of their lifestyle.

Smoking is different to drinking. When you smoke you are harming other people around you, whereas drinking in safe measures is fine for most.

So why should Aamir or any one burn in hell? If you feel strongly about it support the law, dont have to wish for someone to burn in hell.
