Well known television actress Bhavna Balsaver, known for her comic timings, essays this role that recently entered the show. Shaan and Khanak have started on a new journey in their lives and are staying at Gangubai's house. We spoke to Gangubai aka Bhavna Balsavar about her tiffin service, character and more.
Why is Gangubai so strict and angry?
I enjoy being strict and angry. I ensure that people around me, follow certain set of rules I have made in my life. I can't tell you the reason of my behaviour as there a story behind it which will be unraveled on the show. I want the audiences to watch it.
What is most endearing feature of your character?
The strictness Gangubai has is quite endearing in her own way. But at the same time, I am not that rude as even I have a heart. I too get emotional and they show on my face. Also my navari sari gives a different blend to the show's current track.
What new flavour will your character bring to the show?
My character and the whole track surrounding Shantanu and Khanak will be a new flavour for the show. My strict behaviour, disciplinary action, comedy will add to the new flavour in the show.
Why are you against married couples?
There is a reason which I am unable to reveal right now. Soon the audiences will learn about my past story and will know why I don't like couples and why am I against the idea of love.
Running a tiffin service must be profitable. How did it start?
I love to cook food and also I like to feed others and I am happy that my tiffin service is going very well. My passion for cooking and food led to the idea of this business and when I saw that I got good returns, I was more interested in it than ever.
You wear sports shoes with sari. Why did you opt for this look?
Logically speaking, I love to stay fit and shoes are super comfortable. They allow me to be fast and fit and also help me in chasing thieves, if any. Apart from shoes, even the navari sari, I wear, makes it simple to run quickly.
What is the special quality of Rang Badalti Odhani?
Audiences have seen the urban look of the show, especially Shantanu's family, who belong to rich family, and with my entry in the show, audiences will find the earthy and rustic set up of Mumbai. We will now depict the middle class society look in the show which I think will add more spice, drama and excitement to Rang Badalti Odhani. I hope people continue loving and watching the show.
What do you think of Shantanu and Khanak ?
They are a lovely couple. Both Shaan and Khanak compliment each other and it's rare to find such a lovely couple who is always ready to sacrifice for each other. Khanak is very sweet while Shantanu adds sugar into her sweetness.
What do you feel about people lying to you?
I don't like liars and if someone is lying to me this means they are cheating. It makes me angerier and frustrated. I will never entertain liars in my house and my business.
What do you have to say about Shantanu's decision of becoming independent?
I think, I agree with his decision as how long can he live under the shadow and protection of his parents. It is good to know that he has come out of his sheltered life and is ready to face challenges of life.
You are Maharashtrain yourself, so how did you prepare for the character and the look?
I am a half Maharashtrain and I stay in Maharashtra, so on a daily basis, I come across Marathi language which I feel is not a difficult language at all. The dressing style is very unique for sure. In fact navari saris show the essence of Maharashtra. It was pretty easy for me to get into the garb and character of Gangubai.
Your current show Gutur gu had no dialogues- how do you draw a comparison?
In that show, I don't have to utter a single word while over here I have to be very loud and angry. Half the month I am not talking while next half I just talk non stop, so I am utilizing all my energy playing the character of Gangubai.
What do you enjoy most about doing comedy shows?
I believe that an actor can learn acting through acting classes but one can't teach anyone comedy timing, which is most important. To hold the attention of the audiences and make them laugh, one has to have timing. I enjoy my comic timing and feel that I have inherited this quality from my mother –Shobha Khote and uncle –Viju Khote.
How strict a person are you in real life?
I am not at all strict like Gangubai but I have certain principles, which I follow in my life like getting up early and having lunch on time etc.
Do you have rules or any do's and don't's about anything in real life?
Yes, I have made certain do's and don't which I think is very necessary in life. Take for example, I love to be very punctual and I want the person I am meeting to be on time too. If it doesn't happen, I get irritated and angry.
You recently got married. How does it feel to be married?
It feels great but after my marriage, I am so busy with my work and travelling from my home in Marine Drive to different shooting locations like Jogeshwari, Madh Island, so I feel my whole day goes in travelling and shooting. I haven't enjoyed my marriage life. But whenever I am free, I love to spend time with my husband and family.
What changes or responsibilities has marriage brought?
There is sense of responsibility being a wife and daughter-in –law. I come on time, as now after marriage I have lovely family like my husband and my in–laws, who waits up for me. It is nice to know that someone is waiting for me. We talk and share details of our daily lives.
