Aamir Khan
Known to experiment with his looks, Aamir Khan is set to dictate style statements yet again with his forthcoming film, Fanaa.

After his trademark moustache and long wavy hair in Mangal Pandey — The Rising, the actor has donned a bunch of accessories, including vibrant mufflers, a red chilly neckpiece, a few wristbands, and bracelets.

Says director Kunal Kohli, "Fanaa is not a fashion-filled film. The characters are wearing normal, natural clothes. But there're certain accessories in the film that will become synonymous with the lead actors after the release."

Desi cool

Designer and stylist Mamta Anand (she styled Saif Ali Khan in Salaam Namaste and Hum Tum) was briefed by Kohli to give Khan a desi look. As he plays a Delhi boy, Khan's costumes comprise denim jackets, printed full-sleeved shirts, polo neck shirts and bright mufflers.

Says Anand, "The mufflers have been coordinated with each outfit Aamir has worn. He may be a local boy, but he's stylish. Therefore, I picked up a few rugged denims and worn out shirts from Dubai. His clothes are in tandem with his characteristic traits.

Since we were shooting in the winters there are a lot of layers in his clothing and the mufflers complete it. I'm sure that after the film releases, bright, handspun mufflers are going to be a rage in north India in the winters."

Kajol and Aamir Khan
Director Kohli complains about the overuse of designer branded clothing in Bollywood films.

"I strongly feel that there's too much designer c**p going on in films today. I wanted my actors to look cool in desi outfits. None of the stuff that Aamir and Kajol are wearing is designer stuff. I think it's pass to wear designer clothes these days."

Chilly chatka

Talking about her experience, Anand says, "We had heard that Aamir Khan was finicky. But it's quite untrue. He believes in logic and reasoning. Once he is aware of the reason for a certain get-up he's completely non-interfering."

In Fanaa, Khan wears a red chilly locket around his neck throughout. Says Anand, "Kunal wanted to have an accessory that summarises the character Aamir plays. The red chilly is symbolic in many ways.

One has to watch the film to realise it. In fact, there's a transformation that Aamir's character undergoes in the film. In the latter half, he has a completely different look, with cropped hair. But I'm not allowed to divulge the details."

Kohli on Narendra Modi

Kunal Kohli
Kunal Kohli has decided to support Aamir Khan and the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) on the issue of the Narmada dam.

He tells Hitlist, "Who are the people condemning Aamir's stand on the Narmada issue? They are a bunch of politicians — or should I say thugs? The latter word suits them to the T. They have mobilised hooligans to burn effigies, pull down posters and hurl shameful slogans at Aamir. I don't understand how such cowardly violence can be tolerated in our country.

Let me remind thugs like Narendra Modi that it was during the Gujarat earthquake that Aamir Khan personally donated Rs 25 lakh as relief for the victims. Most of our politicians hardly made any contribution at that time.

As far as my film is concerned, there's no possibility of it getting affected, as his fans do not comprise violent mobs. Understand what Aamir is trying to say first, and then react."
